Hey Steve, I just discovered you via YT suggestion. Saw the title and knew it was info I was actively seeking after some path reflection and insights. Thanks so much for sharing about your field pack. It's exactly what I needed, with a few personal tweaks, like the headlamp with extending sections to avoid battery waste, instead of flashlight. But I love your stuff: a few higher quality more expensive bits mixed in with medium and lower price range items, all of which meet your needs and get the job done. I absolutely agree with the pencil caps and like the removable erasers on the Blackwings. Never knew you could sharpen mechanical pencils - so my fave is that long point sharpener. While in a massive life change phase, I made a sketchbook by simply folding some white copy paper (I know, zero tooth! But it's what I had at the time.) twice so it formed a small book, and tucked that into my backpack with a sharpener and a few graphite & colored pencils and erasers. As needed, I refolded the book to access blank pages. It served me very well in a pinch. When inspiration strikes, the channeling energy calls, life is stressful or you have an opportunity, ya just gotta art, no excuses, no apologies, no delays. That is the artist's life. I look forward to enjoying and learning from more of your works. Blessed be.

That Burt's Bees Vanilla lip balm is bomb. They got some other good flavors, but that's the best one I've tried
@recoveringsoul7553 жыл бұрын
i love that flavor/scent too. But if you're in bear country, anything made with beeswax can attract bears looking for a nice honey meal. The fastest way to spread the scent is by burning it, like a beeswax candle, or if you make a hobo stove if you made it with beeswax instead of plain paraffin. It's a bear invitational. Just be aware of that, yes it burns longer and cleaner, but you have to let those stoves cool completely before putting them away or they can reignite, and the bears have plenty of time to find you before you put it away

Great information! Its always good to see other artists equipment. A really good 'Carry-all' bag is produced by Derwent Pencil Company (I'm not sure if is marketed in the States, but worth checking on the internet). Basically it is a shoulder bag with a mesh pouch for carrying loose items such as sharpeners, paper stumps, pencil sharpener, eraser and a watercolour kit. The interior is made up of removeable sections with elasticated straps that hold 132 pencils (which could include conte pencils, sketching pencils, watercolour pencils etc. whatever you like). The only drawback is that the shoulder strap D rings are made of plastic which may break if you add to much weight to the bag - this happened to me because I put in a heavyweight watercolour pallete, and another section of pencils from a second bag; so I replaced the D rings with metal split rings usually found on keyrings (readily available on the internet or hardware store. The back of the bag holds space for an A5 Sketchpad. Lastly the bag has a removeable strap and carrying handle. Hope you find this useful (and no, I'm not sponsored by the company!)
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Garry, it's always great to learn about new gear bags. It looks good, though those plastic D rings are a design flaw, but I like how you solved it... just a little ingenuity on your part! Draw on!
@GarryAkehurst5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for getting in touch. Generally speaking it is surprising how many design flaws or just plain bad designs occur in art materials - even those products made by large international companies who have traded for hundreds of years and should know better. I'm sure you can think of examples you have come across. I don't know the reason for this - perhaps it's a confusion between materials produced for professionals / amateurs / students; perhaps it's just a desire to get a product to market as soon as possible and make a quick buck. To be a little kinder to those companies maybe it's just a lack of foresight as to the needs of artists and the media they use. Anyhow, I wish you well and thanks again.

This is just the thing to get me going, before I go to sketch outdoors... - I like screw-clamp pencil extenders, when I'm not using mechanical pencils or lead holders. Chunkier than a pencil cap, but acts as one in transit, while ekeing a bit more out of my pencil stubs when I get where I'm going. - I just started using those Zig Brushable pens myself. I'm always interested in making my sketching paraphernalia more compact and portable, and having two tones in one pen helps with that. Encouraging to see that much better artists think there's something in them, too. Good point about the wet wipes. I'll have to go look about some while I'm buying vanilla bean lip balm.
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt5 жыл бұрын

Graphite, charcoal, pen and ink? Thanks for watching.
@Obsidian_Iris_5 жыл бұрын
I second the Rhodia pads (from France), their paper is exceptional and is less expensive than comparable Moleskins. By the way, your first pronunciation was correct. It’s the simplest option, “MOWL-skin” and the Cahiers is “KAH-yay.” Sakura Microns are excellent for line art, EXCEPT, oddly enough, for the regular brush pen. It’s difficult to control for a brush pen. Look into the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. A very cool feature is that it’s refillable!
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt5 жыл бұрын
@@Obsidian_Iris_ great info and feedback. I do have and have used the Pentel Pocket pen and love it because it's waterproof and refillable with their ink refills, but I'm kinda clunky with it and don't have that wonderful comic book artist kinda control I'd like to have. Just have to take it out and use it more.

Moleskine notebooks are best for writers and journalists who are jotting down notes with a ballpoint pen or a pencil. Anything else (such as fountain pens or markers) are a disaster. I much prefer Rhodia or Clairefontaine notebooks.

steve where do you get your referance material without worrying about copyright thanks
@SteveAtkinsonFineArt5 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, I usually take my own photo reference. Anytime I'm on a hike or in nature I have my camera with me. Yeah, I'm that guy, lol. I hire reenactors or ask friends to model for me if I'm going to do a story painting. It's easier than it sounds.

Staedtler erasers are not as good as many people believe. They aren't as good as Faber Castell and no where near as good, as Tombow Mono Plastic, or Sakura Sumo Grip or Kokuyo. Those brands, remove the deepest black marks, they do it easily, they DO NOT smudge the graphite, destroying your drawing, and another very important thing, they are soft and do not damage the paper. PS Lyra Kneadable eraser, is the best kneadable eraser. (Faber Castell is not bad, but it's their only product, that Lyra makes it WAY better.)

Hi Thomas! You live in an amazingly beautiful country. I'd come for a visit if it didn't mean having to be on an airplane for almost an entire day, lol! Your verandah painting video was fun to watch... you're a talented man... keep going!! BTW, are the birds always that noisy in Australia????
