I actually have a theory on why Toby was so afraid in this episode. I think the scrapped engines and forgotten railway reminded him of his past experience on his old line and what would’ve happened if Sir Topham Hatt hadn’t saved him or maybe… He did work at the mine as it is shown that his old railway was on Sodor in the show so maybe he thinks the ghosts of his abandoned friends might come to take revenge.

I have a funny idea of this take of the story! Toby is excited about taking the fat controller and his grandchildren to some new locations he discovered on the tramway line being Ulfstesd castle and the mines. But as work is happening on these restorations, Mavis boasts about not being afraid of ghost while Thomas who encountered ghost before is a bit spooked while Toby isn’t hesitant and doesn’t like that Mavis is teasing Thomas while Percy is worried about the ghost. One night, Mavis did a night shift which she thinks she’s brave until she comes across the spooky atmosphere and the ghost of the old warrior actually spooks Mavis. Toby saw Mavis return feeling horrified as Toby investigates with Mavis who is still spooked until she discovers Bertram who explains what happened to him in the past years of the mid Sodor and is happily reunited with Sir Handel and Peter Sam to which they mentioned that Duke was at the works but he be pleased to reunite with his long lost brother, which shocked Mavis and Toby but everything went well with the new attractions on the tramway line and Mavis doesn’t tease others about ghost again. Overall thoughts on my idea of the story?

I think the part where you think Toby shouldn’t be sacred about the mines isn’t really valid. Like, they show many of times where scrap engines lie all over the land, something Toby once feared before being purchased by the Fat Controller. Also, the part where you say the Ring of Roses part that’s actually Toby’s theme turned spooky. Something Mike and Junior also did for Henry in Haunted Henry. And the Bertram thing I get, but as T1E2H3 said, the mystery behind Bertram is what makes him work as a character. We don’t know who he is or what his intentions are. So we should just trust Toby’s reaction that he’s a friendly guy.
@SrMechaGojira932 жыл бұрын
Even as a kid, I’ve always considered this episode a mixed bag. Love the costume. While Toby’s wimpy persona started here, it wasn’t part of his character 100% like the rest of the series afterwards. Everyone always keeps giving HiT (then later Mattel during BWBA) too much flack for constantly adding in pointless new characters in order to make more money, but I say this was the first episode to do this practice.
@TheNwr12 жыл бұрын
So there's a story the Buried Truck wrote some time back, where Toby keeps running into a ghost in the Hackenbeck tunnel. It's a benevolent ghost, who is said to be reaching out to Toby largely because he's so wise and experienced. That's kinda my headcanon for this episode. Toby felt legitimately terrified because whatever spirits were about in the mine were reaching out to him in some way, as in, he's wise enough to know when something supernatural is actually going on, whereas Thomas would be freaked out by the fog and noise. There's also a theory that the signalman that helps them find their way initially is also a ghost or spirit, and only Toby and STH encounter it. Maybe the spirits were reaching out to protect the mine, or give some kind of warning to the dangers of further colonizing the area, who knows, but that's how I rationalize it.

I think execution is largely a key factor with the 'jittery Toby' episodes. There's still plenty later episodes that take that direction but he at least starts off in character until something legitimate sets him off, see Toby's New Shed or Hasty Hannah, those are kind of fun, showing it's still Toby but he's capable of being not so above it all. But there's just too many others that cut the formalities and make him a wuss from the start.

How do you make these reviews so funny? I will never forget gigachad Toby or The Fat Controller saying "colonise this bitch". @ShortPuff2 жыл бұрын
My biggest issue with the episode is bertram himself. People somehow heard of this engines, rumours started going around, yet nobody is able to find him at a pretty visible spot ? Really ? How on earth has no one spotted him while they were restoring the place ? How did thomas even heard the story ? How did toby not see bertram in the previous day's ? The mystery aspect of this episode falls completely flat, and makes no sense to me. A few others nitpicks i have are, TFC opening an attraction at the mines. Why that place ? No idea. And while i do understand toby been scared when it was night time, but when it was day time ?? I find that a little out of character for him to suddenly be afraid. Even more so thomas not being the one to be scared, even though his portrayed much younger than toby, and is much more known to be afraid of such things. So for toby to suddendly believe thomas' story and get scared ?? Nah, that's just ain't it. No excuses there. I just feel like they completely swapped both of their characters just to have another toby spotlight This episode is no different to percy and the haunted mine for me. Except i'm more able to somewhat understand percy being frightened in that episode, due to the sudden collapsing of the building. Which quite frankly, is pretty terrifying.

It's like Marley said in Home Alone, “You can be too old for a lot of things, but being scared isn’t one of them.” I’m not saying I support Toby's wimpy, cowardly personality from the later seasons, I’m saying that he can be allowed to have certain fears with justification. Personally, I believe his fear of the mine was justified because of the scrapped carcasses of engines. I state this, because Toby, himself, was bound for the scrapyard before Sir Topham Hatt bought him. As for him getting scared at Thomas's mention of the old warrior ghost, I believe Toby was too scared of the mine to think properly.

@callum1105972 жыл бұрын
I don't blame you. I'm not really fond of the episode either. I mean, while I didn't realise in my childhood Toby was supposed to be wise, I was still surprised Toby would be scared about the old mine. 🤨 Just how exactly should he be afraid of someplace that's just abandoned and at daytime? But you do make a great point, that he was oddly convinced by Thomas there was a ghost. That didn't make sense either, I admit. Plus, the penultimate scene was pretty scary. 😱 I remember I oddly thought about it every time I came over to stay with one of my aunts and uncles as a kid. Man, that wheeshing sound really spooked me! 😨 But in the end, the episode is not terrible. Also not the worst of season 5, like you say. But I'd rather watch other classic spooky stories to it. And I respect anyone who likes the episode, including two of my close friends.

That episode really sticks out in Season 20, a point they were REALLY trying to fix things and get the characters back on track (pun unintended :P). If it wasn't for that episode, I'd say the Brenner era did an okay job with making Toby more flawed but bothering to be nuanced about it. Like, Hasty Hannah makes him jittery too, but something GENUINELY SCARY sets him off that way, he's normal sarcastic Toby at first.

you see, i see your points and in the context portrayed it doesn't make sense, however may i spin another angle on it? you probably said no but imma type it anyway for others, read if you want or not :P so, what if the main reason toby is scared wasn't to do with anything supernatural to begin with, considering the old mine was filled with scrap engines and was essentially run down beyond belief to the point i'm amazed it was saved, but what if he started with having an un-ease because of the scrapped engines and rolling stock and such, like these were his metaphorical brothers, and that sense of being watched is something his mind is doing seeing all the decay and trying to process it, it is only heightened by thomas' story which i think we only got a condensed child friendly version of where this old warrior "ghost" was one of the old engines that used to work at said mine, and mysteriously disapeared, but on moonlit nights it haunts the old mine, looking for engines to take away, which unbenounced to thomas he's heightened the fear of being scrapped in toby by accident along with seeing all the dead engines, but he was just trying to tell toby some old wives tale as he thought it'd be fun, maybe try and shit percy up later on when he's on guard, who knows, but this leads to toby hearing bertram and freaking out that his time has come or something only to discover bertram isn't some ghost, but was who the tale was based on as he supposedly went missing at the time the mine closed, but he was just in the mine, chilling out, his driver being the only company he had, and once the mine started being renovated he was brought out to help during the night, not realising there was a standard gauge engine on site and thus accidentally scares toby thinking he's next i know this is a stretch and is a lot of filling in blanks, but it does fit series 5's tone quite well, and makes the story seem a bit more thought out than just "oh look fun spooky romp" and i mean who knows, maybe these extra blanks were originally planned, i doubt we'll find out, but its interesting to speculate
