Your ZFS information about the RAM is inaccurate. From the ZFS dev Some well meaning people years ago thought that they could be helpful by making a rule of thumb for the amount of RAM needed for good write performance with data deduplication. While it worked for them, it was wrong. Some people then started thinking that it applied to ZFS in general. ZFS' ARC being reported as used memory rather than cached memory reinforced the idea that ZFS needed plenty of memory when in fact it was just used in an evict-able cache. The OpenZFS developers have been playing whack a mole with that advice ever since. I am what I will call a second generation ZFS developer because I was never at Sun and I postdate the death of OpenSolaris. The first generation crowd could probably fill you in on more details than I could with my take on how it started. You will not find any of the OpenZFS developers spreading the idea that ZFS needs an inordinate amount of RAM though. I am certain of that A system with 1 GB of RAM would not have much trouble with a pool that contains 1 exabyte of storage, much less a petabyte or a terabyte. The data is stored on disk, not in RAM with the exception of cache. That just keeps an extra copy around and is evicted as needed. The only time when more RAM might be needed is when you are turn on data deduplication. That causes 3 disk seeks for each DDT miss when writing to disk and tends to slow things down unless there is enough cache for the DDT to avoid extra disk seeks. The system will still work without more RAM. It is just that the deduplication code will slow down writes when enabled. That 1GB of RAM per 1TB data stored "rule" is nonsense though. The number is a function of multiple variables, not a constant. I can provide you the links to this if you want me too

Wow! that's interesting. I think it's just the whole LTT gang and a good chunk of truenas users giving advice about things they don't understand. I do use truenas and this will defenitly be interesting. I will most likely be virtualising it using proxmox, so i def will play around with the ram and see how it changes performance if it changes performance at all since i use SSDs as a cache. Thanks for sharing

I noticed you opted to use a USB for Proxmox boot drive. Was there more intention there then keeping the hypervisor and the VHD storage separate? Do you have any concerns about Proxmox wearing out the USB quickly. I've read quite a bit that Proxmox/Debian writes will wear out the drive and Proxmox is not like ESXi that loads mostly into memory. Alternately I've read that people have run Proxmox off USB for years without the USB wearing out. I'm not positive but I think Proxmox fits in about 2-4GB of space for the boot drive so why bother with the USB boot? Food for thought.

Wow, so many things you can do with Proxmox. Curious how you'll setup your HA, either old laptops or raspberry pis? Maybe a Synology NAS between Nodes to store backups and ISOs. Maybe go over the different storage types and their use cases? I was also curious if having an lxc for docker would be better than having docker running on proxmox OS itself... I wanted to ask if there's any danger in using the entire hard disk capacity like in VMWare ESXi deployments when installing the Proxmox operating system? Or can I reserve one hard disk slot for the O.S. & use the rest (configured with RAID) for the installation & configuration of virtual machines?

I want to do proxmox for primarily opnsense, Pie-Hole, ubiquiti controller. I have two 500GB SSDs I want to use. Will likely not use ZFS due to it's write logging that can wear down consumer SSDs. To my main point: How can I set aside or split up the space on the 500GB drive just for proxmox, say 50GB for that, 8GB for OPNsense, 100 for pie-hole and 20GB for ubiquit controller. I'm leaving room for expansion My other ssd I may turn into a storage / ubuntu VM instllation so I'd like to split that up as well. Thank you.

clustering and hi-availability? This is not Basic initial set-up. At the beginning of the video you say "now this is going to be a very basic setup and i do want to make this as uh kind of user-friendly entry-level friendly as possible." You scared me off after the first 5 minutes.

Everyone saying thank you because they are a noob makes feel like more of a noob, I have no idea what you're talking about, I'm like a deer in headlights and these videos are like getting hit by a car.

You need to learn about ergonomics so your not looking up to the ceiling to see the monitor.

I'm not stressed. I talk fast. I move fast. It's just who I am. I don't know what else to tell you.

Guessing it's safe to presume after his Windows cdkey fiasco, this is also a disguised endorsement. I mean come on, even the monitor in background is displaying the company's logo. Who does that but a paid endorsement.

What? What logo? The monitor behind me has my logo on it but that's it.
