I've had some good roosters & some bad ones, but my current rooster is an answer to prayer. He's a really sweet little guy. When that "bomb cyclone" hit Colorado, we were hit very hard. Winds near us were described as hurricane force winds. It was very cold too and we couldn't get out our door because the wind wouldn't let us open it. Finally, the storm slowed and we worriedly made our way to the chickens. They were all huddled in the back of a large dog kennel trying to avoid the blizzard. Lying across them between them and the kennel door was Grayson our 6 month old roo. His wings were stretched over the girls and he was covered in ice. My husband dug through the snow bank blocking them from us and we rescued them all and all survived thank God. But I love this rooster! He is still a sweet bird.

Love this. You made me cry. I'm building my coop right now with my husband, getting chicks soon. I couldn't agree with you more! I live with dog sounds, mowers, cars, and very loud motorcycles. Roosters and chickens should be normal sounds in a city, especially now.

I'm in tears for you. I'm a VERY NEW subscriber. So so sorry you lost Boy George! You have the same passion and love for your chickens as I have had for mine. As a child my favorite rooster (Billy) came when I called him and slept in my bunk bed with me. He lived many many many years. One morning before I left for school he looked at me a certain way. (At that moment I didn't know what was to come) I got home from school as he was gone. To this day i swear he was saying goodbye to me. Fast forward 40 or so years and I have the opportunity to have chickens again. My sister gave me a hen named twelve and a rooster I have yet to name. Maybe Buddy or Roo. Who knows yet LOL I have 20 hen chicks coming next Friday and can't wait to get back on the chicken train. I've been feverishly watching your videos to refresh care for all of them. Thank you for your videos and passion for chickens. You're a kindred sole. 💗🐓🐔🐣🐥🐤🤗

A quick note about the hen "Twelve". An old manager of mine had a random chicken walking around in her Neighborhood and nested by her front stoop. Even laid an egg. She posted on FB a video of this chicken... saying what do I do it won't leave my house. I messaged her saying I'll come get her. I showed up at her very city street to get this hen at 11pm at night. I named her Eleven because I thought it was 'Strange' to pick up a chicken at 11pm at night. In the movie Stranger Things the girls name was 'Eleven'. Long story short my sister took care of 'Eleven' until a predator got her. Her baby chick was left behind and named "Twelve' who I have now. 😁 Thanks again for your heartfelt honest videos!!

We live in the city limits of a small rural community and January will mark 3 years as chicken keepers. We have no restrictions in our town regarding chickens or roosters- however our neighbors are close. We want to be respectful. Initially we thought we would not have a rooster. In fact we culled one from our original group of chickens because we were concerned about the noise and problems it might cause for our neighbors. It broke our hearts. Fast forward to today. We have re-homed three more roosters that we ended up with in straight-run purchases over the past two years. Then along came Hei-Hei and we love this rooster guy and have kept him as part of our flock of 14. We really came to like the idea of having a self-sustaining flock. We love hearing him crow. He typically only does it a few times in the morning and a few times in the evening. I have to really be paying attention to hear it from inside our house. That may change. He is still pretty young. We gift our neighbors with plenty of eggs. They all actually love our chickens and one helps us if we have to be out of town. So no complaints- so far, fingers crossed 🤞

Yes, thank you for making this! ❤️ Not sure if anyone motioned this already, but aside from making babies, roosters also help keep the peace among the hens - they break up fights before they get out of hand. And they also keep an eye out for hawks, too - they play an important role in the flock! Plus they're great cuddle buddies XD (Mine at least!) And I am so sorry for your loss of George 😢 He was so cute and sweet 😢 RIP and may his spirit stay with Kiki on those cold nights 💕

I have a theory that it's about class, not noise. There's an idea that chickens = lower class (or "foreign"). That sentiment traveled across the decades after WW2.

Love your videos, they are helping me immensely. I'm 70 and originally from Seattle. I resettled in the outskirts of Tucson, AZ 12 years ago. I'm new to chickens. I purchased 22 chicks and now have 12 silkies, 7 Rhode Island reds, and 3 barred rock. 14 are hens.... and 8 are silkie roosters. Yikes, I know. But the little roos are kept is separate areas and are really quite sweet (to me). The hens lay eggs daily, in fact, either I can't count or someone is laying extra eggs. There are no chicken restrictions here that I'm aware of. In fact a favorite outing has been the annual chicken coop tour all and around Tucson. It's been really fun to see how others are housing their chickens. Thanks for your advice and fun videos. I'm a fan. And I miss the Northwest!

This video made me cry! But I love you lady. You send a good message. A positive message. Once I got my rooster everything changed in my flock. The hens started behaving and getting along, and they are all eating and roosting together now! I love to hear my Romeo crow every morning. He crows back and forth with the rooster across the street Mr cockadoo! My neighbors don't seem to be too bothered by it. I'm very lucky. although Romeo and the hens are in the coop, which is my van that I converted into a chicken coop LOL! Until about 7:00 a.m.. I can hear him faintly crowing inside the van Coop but I don't think my neighbors can hear him. I don't think they complain though. Because I promised them free eggs! Keep doing what you're doing and spreading your positive message because we need this in this world today! Okay I'll stop crying now! LOL

Oh, this hits hard. I’m so sorry. I have serama roosters and their personalities are more than wonderful. They make great loveable pets and often are more affectionate than the hens. I’m certain he was very happy to be a resident of Chickenlandia with a great and loving president that cared for him. My neighbors ask us if their goats making noise bothers us. It doesn’t bother us at all, in fact I love hearing them. We live in the country, so it seems to me this type of noise is to be expected if one decides to live near farmland. But you’re correct about city noise too. (I lived in a major city once and I’d take roosters crowing any day over what I heard there at all hours!!... attacks, yelling, profanity, sirens, screaming, honking, loud stereos..every minute of the day. ) I think as long as people are considerate, like making it so that the crows are not really loud by soundproofing the coop, not having the coop right outside the neighbor’s bedroom window, lol, etc,... it should be ok. There are roosters whose crows are not as loud too. If people in the city can have pet macaws and cockatiels who are also very loud, why not a few chickens? Yep! Chickens are definitely a way out of poverty, whether showing or selling eggs, feathers or meat. 👍🏻 I know of a breeder who makes up to 25,000 a year just by selling chicks. That’s above the poverty line! That’s also terrific supplemental income. Again, sorry for your loss. 🙏🏻

Im constantly running around breaking up fights and trying to protect the weaker hens from being ganged up on. I do my best to give each animal the best life i can. I always have at least one injured rooster in my bedroom trying to rehabilitate. Its definitely not easy. 8 roos in the basement one in the living room and one in my bedroom and 8 out in the old dilapidated trailer. Lots of crowing. Thankyou so much for your videos. I just found your channel and I love chickenlandia, I love my girls and definitely through all of this going on they provide us some entertainment and a reason to get outside. I'm in California in a small central valley town. When I started my chicken experiment the man I bought a little coop from gave me his last 2 little chickens, I call them banties but they look like your little George a boy and girl but he never crows. They are pretty friendly and my son loves to carry them around. But, in April on a trip to the feed store my son saw the baby chicks and he just had to have them. We came home with 2 straight run and I told him if they were roosters they'd have to go. Of course 1 was a rooster and 1 was a hen, we had no problems until about 2 weeks ago when animal control came because my neighbors complained. No roosters in the city limits and only 3 hens, I'm already a little over that so I had to find a home for our rooster or pay a $237 fine per day! I was upset my neighbors didnt come talk to me since their dog is a nuisance barker that I have put up with. I found him a home with family that lives out in the country and he has lots of girlfriends now. All the noises of the city, the traffic and sirens and loud music and all of that and people are upset with the sounds of nature. It's so sad.

I agree there’s nothing wrong with a rooster crowing, there’s far worse noises we put up with on a daily basis. Emergency sirens come to mind that I can hear going off anytime of the day and night where I live. Regardless what the noise is though, you can get use to it and it doesn’t have to drive you nuts! You have a choice to either make the best of the environment your in or fight a loosing battle you really can’t do much about. I’ve gotten so accustom to the noises around my home that it’s not the noise that keeps me awake. It’s the dead silence we’ll get at certain parts of the night that will wake me up. To solve that problem I bought a Noise generator that I run thru the night. Loud vehicles nor sirens bother me, their just part of the melody I sleep to night after night. If I can sleep thru these noises, then anyone can learn to sleep thru a rooster crowing! Want to have a noise to deal with, try living only 500ft from the railroad tracks that the noise is nothing compared to how the train shakes your house as it goes be at 2:30-3:00 am in the morning and I got use to that too! Oh and those train tracks goes right thru the middle of the large neighborhood! Life be like heaven if all I had to listen to was just a rooster crowing! LOL

You're so sweet. A pet is a pet is a pet, whatever species it is. I'm afraid I wasn't very sentimental about our Dodger. He would fly up into a tree before I could put him away with the girls at night and crow, no, squawk and shriek from 3 am until whatever time I would let the girls out. His previous owners had sent him to the chicken retreat where I got him because no one wanted him. He was useless at servicing the hens too - jumped on at the wrong end every time. No ashes for him I'm afraid, but a hearty chicken soup. So that was that. But my hens were so lovely, especially Henrietta who would sit on the window sill and peck on the window for a treat. Happy memories. Btw, I love the names you give your members of the flock! I only have 3 hens at the moment: Her Majesty, Tweedel Dee and Tweedle Dum. Three guesses who rules the roost and which two hens are besties!

I agree with you about the unfairness of the law in not allowing us to have roosters in the city while there are many other annoying noises out there. Almost every weekend my neighbor across the street plays his awful music on his car while working on it in his driveway for hours. That is annoying to me. A friend gave me a silkie and polish she bought from tractor supply. While they assured her they were hens, she got the same chicks herself, and now she thinks her polish is a rooster because he’s trying to crow. I’m praying that my polish will be a hen as she is two months old, and I would hate to part with her. I spoil her as she is a pet and I worry what type of home she will go to if she has to leave. How do you sex a polish? I tried examining the tips of tail feathers as one utube video suggested, but I can’t get a definite answer. I even called an avian vet and was told there’s no way they can tell. I’ve had parrots sexed by dna through sending out a feather, but the vet office told me chicken can’t be sexed that way.

Rooster's crow is grounding. We moved rural and that is the best sound over machine traffic noise.

I grew up in the city of Rochester. Of all the sounds of the city, I can not imagine being upset over a rooster. Now, dogs? Dogs barking were a constant nuisance. So sorry you about BoyGeorge.

I have great neighbors too. They all bring their company to visit the animals... which is fine with me. And of course I share eggs with everyone!

I also wanted to add... I started my journey to being self sufficient because one of my children asked me where the meat chicken came from! I was like.... RESET!

So sorry you lost Boy George, 😥. I love the crow of a a roo. Where my cousin lives (Rural CA) it is legal to have hens in town (no roos) but if your neighbors complain you are looking at steep fines after the second "warning"! She unfortunately had to relocate her flock :-(.

Totally 💯 agree with you. I actually love the rooster crow. I asked my neighbor if she would mind me adding 1 rooster 🐓 and she bluntly said “yes I mind” although by law I can have 1 where I live. I just wanted to be a good neighbor. And I have a huge lot where our neighbors aren’t close by. 🤷🏽♀️ and I’m sorry about boy George💔

Sorry for your loss.i bet only chicken people understand you.i love all my chickens and they all have a name.i never had a rooster till last week i got a pair of a French breed that I cannot even pronounce their breed lol and they are inside my home until ready to join my other chicks. I also lost few chicks by bobcats and few months ago i lost my precious polish girl ,we had some sort of bond that only animal lovers understand.she died by an accident and i wish i could post her photos here. 2 of my chickens got sick and after 6 months i tried all home remedies i got hopeless and I didn’t know how to put them to death,so i took them to vet and they got euthanized humanly. Not sure if people ever get rid of their birds this way but I myself couldn’t do it. i also have free range quails .anyways my life is filled with my pets and all my friends say if we were animal we’d loved you to be our owner.

Haha yes I’ve had people say if they died they would want to come back as one of my chickens lol. Sounds like any animal would be lucky to be in your care. ❤️

I love that you are talking about this! I live in a town with a sign that SAYS it's a right to farm BUT "no roosters" 👀 how do I bring that to a point of change
@WelcometoChickenlandia2 жыл бұрын
Ugh that’s so silly! I’m hoping reminding people that if we are serious about sustainability we will have to accept that around the world the rooster crow is simply normal ambience. And it’s important for a sustainable future to make some sacrifices!

I think that unfortunately for roosters, the main issue is the night noise that they make and how far the sound can travel. I personally don't think they are any noisier than dogs. which also cause friction between neighbours. They also have a rep for being aggressive and needing 'the chop'! We are so far removed from food production in city areas that even if we change our mindset our local government bodies prevent us from keeping them anyway.

I am so sorry about your little rooster ‘Boy George!’ And I am heartened that you seem to genuinely care about the lives of these living creatures AND poverty as well! I am a recent, first time chicken keeper. Can I ask you a question? I know that chickens have a pecking order. Is there a typical length of time that a dominant hen makes her dominance clear (and settled) to a younger, less dominant little hen? My younger little rescue chicken cries and will fly to ME to escape being bullied. This upsets me. Please let me know what is typical in these birds. Thank you honey!
@WelcometoChickenlandia4 жыл бұрын
How long have they been integrated? It should get much better after a few weeks, depending on how slowly or quickly the integration process was.
@1lightspeed4 жыл бұрын
Welcome to Chickenlandia I have been trying to ‘slowly’ integrate them for two weeks. When I try and the dominant hen goes after my little (approx 8-9 months) hen, I put the abusive bird in time out by caging her for a few hours (still in sight of my little girl.)At night, though, I bring my little hen indoors. Today is the first time I have left her out...in the coop. I just dont want her to be scared and bullied...she will literally fly to me because he knows I will hold her and I guess she feels safe then. Am I going about this wrong? All of these birds are rescues and I want them to be happy.

I live on a country block 5000Sq Mtrs(1 1/4 acres) ..., in a semi rural area in the country, my closest neighbour is 50mtrs (55yards) away..., I am allowed 12 chickens, a goat or a pig..., but I am NOT allowed to have a rooster. (lots of people do because I hear them crowing when I am out letting my chickens out)..., but I have already been in trouble with our council for cutting down some scrub without their permission.., they even threatend to sue me (I would of fought it and won..., and they knew it, but still) ..., they would just love this.
