In 1979 I was living in Nashville. Charlie Daniels had his Volunteer Jams at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium and a group of us to include some of my buddies from Jacksonville, Fla were listening that night to the live broadcast. There was no script to the Jam just whoever showed up played. Well we got knocked on our rear ends when the survivors of Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage unannounced. When they started Free Bird with no singing we all ran out of the house to our vehicles and turned the radios wide open. Then we sat there in silence while they played. No words can describe the feeling we had that night of hearing Free Bird for the first time without Ronnie Van Zant singing.

After almost half a century, this, in my opinion, is one of the best songs ever. Performed by my all-time favorite band. Thank you thank you thank you for reacting to them. Lynyrd Skynyrd is one deep rabbit hole to go down, so much amazing music. Tuesday’s Gone, Ballad of Curtis Lowe and Simple Man are some excellent ones that I can listen to again and again. If you watch the live version from Oakland 1977 you will see how the bird chirps are done. I got to see them just before the crash. My heart hurts so bad seeing these videos but they take me back to much better days. They were Southern Rock Gods. There will never be another like them.

And sweetie, the sound you heard, that sounded like a bird chirping was Gary Rossingtons slide on the strings of his guitar. I was at the 77 show . I was in Thea army at Fort Ord and went to the day on the Green concert in Oakland . It was the best concert of my life. And there were so many headliners that day.

I saw this band a bunch along the way, and nobody could whip a crowd into a frenzy quite like the original lineup of this band. Wow! You did a Lynyrd Skynyrd song! This is what is known as "Southern Rock" from the Southland of USA. This song is actually a Rock Anthem in the South and throughout USA. Several members of this band were killed when their plane crashed into a Mississippi swamp. Lead singer Ronnie VanZant, Steve Gains (Guitar Player) his sister Cassie Gaines and pilots killed. Everyone else severely injured. In this video they were opening for the Rolling Stones. Notice the long black stage which is the tongue on the stones logo. Rule was they were not allowed to go out on the black part of the stage. They did it anyway and it really made Mick Jagger angry. Ronnie VanZant didnt care. It is said that Skynyrd stole the show and the Stones were not happy about that at all. This is the concert that put Skynyrd on the map. This is probably not the best song for you to react to. I can understand this not being your thing. Ronnie VanZant is like a God here in the South. He was a musical genius, wrote all of the songs and NEVER wrote the lyrics of the songs down. He said if a song was worth writing you didnt need to write the words down. As a young boy he would tell his father that he would die before he was 30...he died when he was 29. They have a lot of other songs you would probably like but if not thats cool too. Good Job Gitana!

It was s different age in music when I was in high school and they had a tragic plane crash shortly after this concert that killed the lead singer and others, just FYI , they left an inspiration on the Rock world and the surviving brother and others members still playing to today and they are guilt good, thanks for the video this meant a lot to a lot of people , God bless

CLASSIC SOUTHERN ROCK.. It isn't for everyone. For me though, it's what i grew up on being from the southern US. The talent in this band at the time this concert took place is nothing less than phenomenal. The solo that went on forever was and still is a masterpiece that will never be duplicated. This band still tours today in some form some 56 years after forming and 43 years after the fateful plane crash in south Mississippi that claimed the lives of 6 people: pilot Walter McCreary, co-pilot William Gray, assistant road crew member Dean Kilpatrick, lead singer/founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing singer Cassie Gaines (brother/sister). This song is a classic but again, it isn't for everyone. But I would ask that you not write off Skynyrd after 1 tune. It's an acquired taste for some so dive deeper into their catalog of music. The more you do, the more you'll come to enjoy it. Well done.

I seen them around a year or two after lead singer Ronny Vanzant was killed inn a plane crash with other members but at the end of the concert they brought out Ronnie hat and put it on the mic stand the bands started playing and the croud singing the words while the band just played there wasn't a dry eye in the arena maybe to a lot of people best song ever written. I grew up with this stuff in the 70's...Skynyrd was one of my favorites (nothing against the post-crash lineup but I always preferred this band with Ronnie as the lyricist & lead singer, along with Steve & Cassie Gaines. Their music was very influential, and Classic Rock stations in the U.S. still play it regularly. They were still ascending as a band when the crash occurred, within just a short time after releasing their album Street Survivor. It's perfectly fine that it wasn't your thing...I agree that the live version of this can go on & on, that's just what bands did back then because that's what fans were demanding of live shows. Give some of their other music a go...they have a respectable catalog of good music!

"What is that weird sound, like a bird?!" I laughed at that. The song is FREEBIRD, lady! And it's Gary Rossington "chirping" the guitar with his slide. BTW, I so love the combo of Rossington, Collins, and Gaines. They were so complimentary. Gary was strongest at slow/mid-tempo "feeling" solos and a very underrated slide guitarist. Not flashy but clean and great tone and feeling. Collins was all flash and fire - how he played a solo like this so fast and for so long - his forearms must have been on fire! If you watch teaching channels, the riffs and runs on the solo are actually extremely difficult and technical, especially at speed. Finally, Steve Gaines was just coming into his own as a guitarist at the time of the plane crash was was really good as well - note how well he matches Allen at the end of the solo. When you think that they also had Ed King at the beginning of the band's time together, it's really crazy that so much guitar prowess was concentrated in one band. And Leon Wilkerson was no slouch on base either.

Hey, just found your channel, from what I've seen you got a good genuine thing going on here and I dig it. For context I'm from North Carolina, and was raised on Skynyrd. They were my first concert when they played at the end of the Kyle Petty (Nascar driver) charity ride. Also for context im 30, I feel that is important as rock spans such a vast time span. With that said, this version was more for people like me that grew up on the songs. A not live version would give more focus on the lyrics and the meaning behind them, but this was pure, pre plane crash, Ronnie Van Zant (lead singer) Lynyrd Skynyrd. They named the band after their gym teacher...it causes some amount of confusion. But with this particular performance being so unique, I do not fault your criticism one bit. I would suggest, and I'm literally finding you today so apologies if it has been done, Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Specifically them, not the Shinedown cover. But, If it's just not your "cup of tea", well, we all have different tastes. LOL. It's old. I was there! I was 18 and there to see the Stones but Skynyrd blew us all away. To this day I am grateful and so very glad that I got the chance to see them before Ronnie, Cassie and Steve were killed along with the pilot and crew a year later. I've seen Skynyrd with Ronnie's baby brother Donnie doing the singing and though it's good, it will never be the same as Ronnie and the boys. Thank you for reviewing this one.

This band is called the three guitar army. All the guitarists were excellent, and only one is still alive. This band is and was truly awsome, and the true definition of southern rock. Nobody did or does it better.

You have to remember when that music came out and who else they were competing against. I was a young teenager when they started and being from the southern U.S. it was a time of finding a band that you could relate to.

Saw them LIVE, dozens of times before this was filmed in 1976. Maybe your "Hippies" were different from our Hippies. But here in the South, they were HOT & everyone loved them!

“Playing for Duane Allman”. Guitarist Duane Allman was the master guitarist for the Allman Bros. Band with brother Gregg Allman. Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident. Must check out “Whipping Post”...for some more great Southern Rock!

You just uncovered the holy grail of Southern Rock. That's Gary Rossington making the bird sounds on the slide guitar. The crazy guitar solos at the end of the song are a result of 3 guitarists at once. Yes, the Stones got their butts collectively kicked on this one. Long jam sessions were common at Skynrd concerts, but this song was deliberately written long. I'm surprised that you never mentioned the Duane Allman reference....he's generally considered the second greatest rock guitarist of all time, and his genre of choice was Southern Rock. It warms my heart to see 2 generations of Brits getting exposed to Southern Rock at the same time. You learned a valuable lesson: We southern boys speak slowly and with a twang, but we drive really fast, and play our guitars even faster. Great unbiased review, and I'm glad you appreciated it even if it wasn't your first choice of music.
