To get an accurate sense of what it would take without mechanical equipment (or limited mechanics) just visit an Amish farm. There are some groups who only use mules or draft horses to work their fields. And they have some huge farms. It’s pretty amazing what they do.

I saw an Iowa farmer using an app to locate stones in the field. A drone takes in the data. He also showed a machine he is developing that will actually pick them up. Eventually he wants it to work autonomously in connection with the location technology. I remember my mom talking about walking the fields to pick up stones, back in the 20s and 30s. It never ends.

I’ve been following you for a few years now and have always loved watching farm life. When I was younger there were a lot of farms in Pennsylvania but they’ve slowly disappeared over the years. Well last week we moved into our dream house on a lake in New Jersey and we’re surrounded by farms. We are in heaven. Ever drive we take we go past a farm. I’m now able to buy fresh produce from roadside farm stands, fresh eggs, honey etc. Now with every drive I think of my favorite sheep farmer and how much we appreciate all farmers.

We live in a farming community, but have never lived any place like this before. Since it was right before the official lockdown, and I’m 2400 miles from Sandi, I called a local sheep farmer and asked if I could have a farm tour. I made a new friend, and found a great supplier for lamb and beef. She also raises a bunch of vegetables that she sells in local roadside stands.

He was also an auctioneer, which is another story! All through my life I spent vacations at their farms and spent my last high school years there. I live in upstate New York now, in a rural area, mostly dairy and love it here. We also share your weather (30 minutes from Canada), so I can commiserate with you on the storms! In spite of growing up all over the world (my dad chose the Navy), I prefer the country. I guess it's in the blood! Life would be perfect if I could just keep some chickens in town! I also, however, love going out in the fields with you and Mark, listening to him talk about all of the ins and outs of being a grain farmer, not just the wife of the best shepherd around. I'm also always marveling at the sheer volume of heavy work you do, lifting and carrying panels around like they were just unwieldly sheets of posterboard! I'm almost 78, but even though I was always active as a gardener, a single mom with a full-time job and two kids who then raised a grandchild, I could not have come close to doing half of what you do even when I was 30 years younger!
