My Red Wing 8138 Moc Toe First Look + On Feet

Finally got my hands on these Red Wing 8138 Moc Toes in Briar Slick Oil after searching for months! Got these for just $110 + $15 on eBay and I am loving them so far. A few weeks later, I've really started the break in process and still love the malleable feeling the leather has. Would love to hear what you guys think, do you have a pair?

The Mensch on Menswear I have the 875, 9875 in Golden Russet, 9874 In Black Klondike & the Iron Ranger in amber harness, started getting into boots about 2 years ago, don’t see many here in the UK it was only after watching videos on KZbin that I starting to understand what a good quality boot is, and redwing Heritage range has to be one of the best out there.

The 3141 chukkus are great. Slightly more formal so good for work etc. Just picked up a pair of 2955 Blacksmiths which are great too.

@@TheMensch lmao my man Mensch. well its beyond solid to be frank with you. maybe ' powerful ' or ' bullet proof ' will suffice lol. They feel so solid. I gotta admit I am only recently introduced to red wing from coming on youtube. I never heard the name red wing till a couple of months ago, seeing as I am in the UK. and since then i have acquired both the 8138 and 8137. bought both on ebay of course but they are next to new. Just 110 dollars? 😲Wow! they almost gave it for free in America compared to the price we have to pay for a Red Wing Boot here in Europe. We pay 300€ for that model here. If a pair of shoe costs more than a set of new tires for my car then they are just to overpriced.

Wow that’s unreal! But I’ll say I did buy these used so that was the reason for the heavy discount. There are probably very few of used red wings available overseas since they’re harder to come by. Guess you’ll have to take a trip to US soon!

Great boot. The 8138 is my favourite moc toe. I have the chukka in Briar Oil leather and it is indeed beautiful. I may need the moc toes as well at some point.

Yeah its such an amazing leather type! And the color is only getting better as it lightens up! I think im also going to have to get the chukka soon! Although I also want the Moc Toe in Oro Russet !

Peter Hollomon interestingly enough they fit very differently. I ended up getting the same size but they got much more “squarely” around the front of the boot. There’s a lot more wiggle room in the toes. I’d say either get your usual size or size up and use an insert. I’m actually meaning to try out red wings own inserts. They’re pricey as hell!

Every Nordstrom Rack I go to... there are no Red Wings ever to be found... are you finding these on the web?

They do have on the web but I have much better luck at my local NR- it seems that they pick and choose which stores get the red wings and for some reason the metro area ones seem to get a lot! Sometimes they pop up on the site but often they sell out within minutes! They’re in high deman!

Good question! I think it depends on the batch and the portion of leather they use. Also, mine are new and have lightened up considerably since this video. How old are yours?

Haha im glad RWs have piqued youre interest! Theyre an amazing company! You can, and they can definitely withstand any type of weather! But I always want to keep the leather looking as good as possible for as long as possible, so I rather wear a rain boot made of water resistant leather or synthetic material.

Bought mine last week, they arrive on Tues. About break-in: the salesman said I could soak them in water for 2hrs, wear them for two hours and then let them dry on their side for two days. Do you know anything about this process? Are they going to be ok in a NYC winter? Thanks!

Wow that’s quite the sales pitch! I’m not sure if I’d recommend doing that but I definitely have worn these in the NY winters and in snow with heavy wool socks and they do okay. I just rather have a cheap pair of snow boots (I have from lands end) that are insulated since these are unlined and just won’t do a great job of keeping your feet warm
