I bought the 48 set on sale at Jackson's last Winter as a long term travel set (going away for longer than a couple of weeks). My go-to palette had been Daniel Smith with some Roman Szmal but now this one is my go-to. It just works for what I do.

I had never thought of trying Rembrandt until a store here had the old 5ml tubes on clearance for a crazy cheap price last year. I don't particularly think they are any better than any other artist grade brand but, as you said, they just work for what I do.

Nice colors! I only have one Rembrandt tube - Transparent Yellow PY128. It is very transparent, and rather cold. I’m not crazy about it, but it is perfect for that greenish yellow in the center of flowers. You might look up WN Venetian Red or DS Transparent Red Oxide for your Light Red oxide. Schmincke also makes an English red oxide that might work. Of course, it’s really impossible for me to tell on the screen if those are really even in the ball park. And have no idea if they are easy for you to get. WN Raw Umber was described once as the color of a Cotswold stone cottage, and from pictures I’ve seen, that’s a neat description. A warm, natural light brown, not the dark cool raw umbers. It might be close to the Rembrandt. It’s so much fun to look at other peoples palettes. Thanks for sharing

You're very welcome. Thank you for all your suggestions 🙏 I have used that Winsor & Newton raw Umber before and really liked it. It's definitely a good option but they are so expensive here. I think I will most probably end up just using the Van Gogh or Cotman light red as a replacement for my Rembrandt light oxide red. They're both cheap and should do the job just fine. We shall see.

Nice Chart. I use a lot of magenta Quinacridone, PV 122, for blending, it's not missing from my palette. Cad Red medium is a beautiful color, PR108 Holbein its is included in the range of Oranges, I think the name is Permanent or deep Red Orange. Rembrandt's reds are very beautiful, also a lot of blues. There is a Cerulean with white that I use a lot also for blends, PB15 snd PW7, , I also really like PV23, Cobalt bluish, I don't use Raw Sienna, Rembrandt has a single pigment ocher, Godlden Ocher, it only has PY43, Paynes Gray is very dark, it's like neutral ink, I really don't like it. Definitely for me, Rembrandt is a great brand, and with its new Rangel of colours it is almost perfect. Very nice swacht.

I have dusk green, pink and yellow and one random white that came in an art box…I’m trying not to buy dupes of normal colors and only buying cool stuff…so I didn’t need to buy those, as they seem easy to mix…but I do use the pink the most…I might try this cobalt blue when I need one ( like in 20 years, cause I have a ton of blues)!

I don't know what the use of Cerulean blue is either. As a beginner I heard that it's supposed to be a great sky color and naive me bought a large tube.... But the granulation and the somewhat muted tone make my skies look sad. The happiest sky color to me is from one of the bluish Turquoises (PB 16, very diluted) or a thin mix of PG7 and PB 15 works well too. I know, you are not fond of the Turquoise family, but suddenly the skies may start to smile :-). And - yes - your swatching videos have an ASMR Quality :-) Thank you and happy painting!

Ok, you've convinced me to try Rembrandt instead of my usual faithful Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton Professional. Up until now I've only picked up Transparent Brown Oxide - which is a stunning paint for painting shipwrecks or old girders for example. I think I'm going to have a go at Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue and Permanent Lemon Yellow - which are colours that I'm almost out of at the moment. I love Cerulean Blue when mixed in a wash with either French Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue. It creates a more textured and graded effect in skies, for example.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the brand, most colors look really good! It's ok not liking cerulean, it's not a big deal or anything. (Personally I can't stand pg17 in any form..maybe because its "army" green and opaque XD) I have some Rembrandt in half pans that lasted me years, that pb60 and indigo are my favorites. I am about to order some rembrandt earth tones so this was very useful ^_^

nice~ that quin mangenta looks legit. i'm glad it's not like their quin rose. and surprisingly much different from the perm red violet next to it. that tells me vangogh's perm red violet must have fillers then because the VG version swatches very similar to my other quin magentas and not as deep and dark like the Rembrandt perm red violet swatched here at all. all good to know, thank you!
@JayNathanWatercolor3 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome 🙏 I wasn't sure if the quin magenta would be a good one as it's series 1. I'm sure in most other brands it's at least series 2 right? The permanent Red Violet is very nice. I don't exactly know what I will use it for but I definitely like looking at it 🤣

What a nice color selection Jay, Inreally like that carmine and madder lake, very intense for reds. Cadmium red medium is also my fav shade of warm red. Oh, look for Venetian red from Rembrandt as a substitute to light oxide red, is still pr101 and is so rich and warm, my favorite pr101 so far! You don’t hear about Venetian red as often, but it really worth to try, you won’t be disappointed
@JayNathanWatercolor3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the recommendation Nikki. I had totally forgotten that Rembrandt have a Venetian red. I always think of that color being somewhere between light oxide red (English red) and Indian red. Is that right? I wonder if it will do the job I want? I will have to check it out. The Carmine and Madder Lake are quite nice though they have both been reformulated into single pigments now. I wonder if they still look the same?
@NikkiDraven3 жыл бұрын
@@JayNathanWatercolor yes Venetian is a bit more deep but not purplish as your Indian red. Few months back I made a swatching video with my Rembrandts, if you want to see it in action I can leave you the link, or send you Venetian red swatch photos through Instagram

Hi. No it's not the same. Same pigment but the light oxide red is much more opaque. Like an English red.
@mariram3 жыл бұрын
You talk in many videos of your love for Light Oxide Red. It makes me want to try it sooo much. I have Venetian red in a half pan and I can't recommend this Rembrandt watercolor unfortunately. It's not very pigmented (might be better to get a tube if you really want). Venetian by Sennelier seems better to me. May I recommend you to have a look at Maimeri Blu Dragon's Blood on PBr25? It might be a good substitute for your LRO. It is not as red as Red Brown by Mijello (as far as I can judge by swathes online). As for the greenish Umber, it saddens me that you hate it. I got a half pan of it and I really enjoy it, I find it useful in landscapes. But neither this one is super pigmented. If I remember correctly their original raw Umber was not a strong paint either..
@JayNathanWatercolor3 жыл бұрын
I don't really hate the greenish umber. I've never tried it. I just say I hate it because it has replaced my favourite raw umber 😂 Thank you for all your recommendations. The Maimeri Blu Dragon's Blood sounds very interesting 🙏

Hi Jay, I bought some tubes of Rembrandt watercolors, but I find that the paints contain too many binders. Mixing the paint with a toothpick inside the tubes hasn't been successful. It's quite difficult to achieve a cream consistency when using the paint directly from the tube, especially when mixing colors. Even after a week, if I squeeze them onto my palette, they're not dry, whereas other brands dry overnight. It seems to me that Rembrandt watercolors are not very economical to use. Have you experienced this as well?
@staffanscherloff4596 Жыл бұрын
I recently purchased more Rembrandt tubes, and I’ve encountered the same issue with almost all of them - they contain too many binders and too little pigment. This has been quite disappointing, and I can’t recommend buying tubes from this brand to anyone. There are actually more pigments in their student grade van Gogh watercolours.
