Well proud of my bro - it's been amazing watching this project develop and all the hard work he's put in really shows. You'd be hard pressed to find a commercially done van as precise and as well built as this one and the end product is absolutely brilliant. Hoping you have loads of happy years of motoring and camping in your new camper and it brings as many fun days and adventures as the old 'Go Pro Freda'. :)

Beautiful job you've done on this. The finish is what I would expect from a professional company/conversion business. I've been toying with doing the same for nearly 6 years on and off. My dog and young daughter kind of took over my thoughts, but my daughter is now 2 and I think something like this would be an amazing experience and offer great learning opportunities for her. And the dog is so placid, he would be fine.

Great practical build, im doing a similar non Rock and roll build but I'm installing a pop top for sleeping and increased headroom, plus going with single swivel front seats (like to be able to walk through from front to back) Same van really, a 2018 vivaro lwb.

Thanks. Thats Cool. Yes a pop top roof is very tempting. I’d um’d and ah’d over swivel seats but decided I like my 3 seats and half bulk head more. I can climb over with middle seat folded down so its not all bad. Deffo will make your van more comfortable to have the swivel though. All the best with your build. Happy camping Atb Dave

What a great design! I don't like the rock n roll design at all and this is the design I have been looking at but you're the 1st person I have seen made to work. Great work. The 90cm width is the only issue for me but I think the work around for me would be to have 2 sizes, one like yours with 90cm and another one with full width pull out. I guess I just need to have a extra set of cushions in the garage for when I don't go away alone and full width is required or get the pop top installed as we will be 3 at times.
@playing_in_trafic
@playing_in_trafic 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Yes it working really well but yes I found that with the bed and have also made slot in extensions that bridge the gap between the bed and the cupboards which give around another 30cm. With an extra set of cushions its quite comfortable for 2. A pop top would be ideal.Atb Dave

I faced a similar problem, being 1.98m tall. I opted for an L2 and fitted a Cambee full width R&R with an extended section which makes a full euro kingsize bed. I have room for a 90L compressor fridge, a marine oven, 100L fresh water, shower point, water heater, diesel heater, twin L-ion batteries, camp gear storage and room for my mountain bike. It took some thought, but i'm happy with the result. Once I get my oven sorted, i'll have to post a video of the completed project.

Would like to ask a couple more questions please what in your opinion would need to change in the design flow if you had gone for a mwb it’s hypothetical but I am interested in what your thoughts are taking into account I would use it as as fishing van I could go for an inflatable kayak instead of a moken hard boat ? I am 5 ft 8 so would still want to be able to lounge on the long bench . What was the main driver for going for a 2018 van finally what would be a flexible budget for me to consider to achieve similar to your build I assume at some point you could retro fit e hook up ? Thanks again great watching ps had a good week last week in the trossachs fishing. Great area for van and kyak 👍
@playing_in_trafic
@playing_in_trafic 9 ай бұрын
In the case of a trafic the smaller version to this would be the swb a total length 5m. This lwb is only 5.4m so not a huge difference externally. Inside however it would probably mean doing away with, or severely cutting down the cupboard at the end of the bed. Not an option for me as I needed that for the fridge. Also would require a bit of size reduction on the kitchen but could easily be done. I didn't want to compromise so went for the bigger van. On that I opted for a new van, at the time, as I plan on keeping and using it for the long term. I wasnt prepared to spend my time and money on an older van that may develop faults quite soon after all the effort of the conversion. In terms of budget it could be done easily between £2-3K. Possibly less if you shop around on marketplace etc for bits. Yes e hookup could easily be retro fitted. I have used a tent hookup cable, basically a caravan hookup cable with a couple of protected sockets(and a battery charger) run through the window a couple of times but that was before the solar was added. I often take my inflatable kayak away on trips. Stores in back behind front seat when travelling and on the passenger seat at night. Works out great. Last time I used it was actually in the Trossachs on Loch Drunkie. It is a lovely area. Atb Dave

Well my biggest rigid boat is 2.8 metres and it fits in without difficulty. I'd guesstimate a 3 metre+ boat would fit utilising the underseat pass through. It will allow a 4.2 metre length of timber etc to pass under the seat but as a boat widens up from the ends it reduces available length.

@playing_in_trafic
@playing_in_trafic 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry no video. The floor is screwed down through the base of the van, all the screws were then treated from underneath. Cupboard then screwed down to the floor and to the walls using corner brackets. In some places on the walls I screwed lengths of timber attached to the van body behind the ply to offer more support, particularly for the bed. I've recently done another van but used rivnuts in the metal walls, these work really well and I think offer stronger support. Atb Dave

@playing_in_trafic
@playing_in_trafic 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Happy you like the van. The bulkhead on this model comes from Renault already as upper and lower pieces. To remove the upper section it was a case of removing about 6 or 8 bolts and drilling out two rivets. The upper section then lifted out. The top edge of the bottom section is quite sharp so I added a length of rubber u trim to make it safe. I would imagine if u had to cut a bulkhead down it would cut fairly easily with a jigsaw and then u could do the same and finish of the edge with rubber u trim.

All I can say is wow mate!!! Top job!! Are you a tradesman of sorts? As all very professional looking, especially as its home built... I'm going to the secc next weekend to get some ideas and contacts as I'm looking to do a similar build for this summer. If you don't mind me asking what did the build cost you minus the van? I have around 8 grand to play with but really want to save as much as possible on materials so as buy as good a van as I can. Also how do you find the trafic on running costs? Any info would be much appreciated...
@playing_in_trafic

Thanks. No I'm not a tradesman, just done a lot of diy over the years. The show at secc is fantastic for getting ideas. My build wasn't very much at all, I never fully totalled everything up but I estimate around £2000. Most of that is in hidden stuff like the sound deadening, wiring and the insulation and carpeting. Making the cupboards, bed etc was less than £200. I'm loving the Trafic, it's awesome on fuel being only a 1.6L but still has loads of power due to the two turbos. Not had a service yet so not sure what those costs are like but will find out soon as its due in March. All the best with your build. Dave

Hi. Yep I think a roof vent is a good idea. Wish I had fitted one. I tend to leave the front windows open a crack but still end up with quite a bit of condensation on the windows. I am considering retro fitting one with a fan. I carpeted the door cards simply to tie the look all together and I think it makes it feel a bit cosier than just bare plastic. Good choice on the Vivaro. Really hated moving away from the Freda but I've been really happy with the way the Trafic is working out for me. Fuel efficiency is absolutely fantastic. I do miss the 4x4 in winter though. I haven't fitted a coolant alarm on the Trafic. Hadn't really thought about it to be honest. Not sure if it would have something already. I'll look into it. I know it's not got all the additional pipes to rear heater etc like the Bongo which were a common failure point resulting in total coolant loss. So its not as much a worry but yeah worth thinking about. Cheers Atb Dave
