On Reality Asserts Itself, Mr. Kiriakou tells Paul Jay that from Iraq to Bahrain, it was becoming clear to him that commercial interest, particularly arms sales, was driving U.S. policy in the Middle East

+mrx What was "eye opening"? That American foreign interventions was about commercialism and oil? And not about "human rights"? As John Kiriakou goes on starting near 1:40 and goes on throughout this video. "National interests"=oil according to John Kiriakou. Near 3:40 he says America should tell the public the truth.

I love these interviews. Very fun to hear insider perspective from cia. Wish one of the state department employees would do similar interview for this time period also.

If people are so upset about these wars over oil... then why don't the people just stop using the resource that's caused soo many wars? The government is merely supplying a demand. It's the people who are at fault here.

You also make it sound so simple to not use oil. So many things require oil, are transported using oil, manufactured using oil, lubricated by oil byproducts..... People would have to be willing to go without and step back into agricultural lifestyles and somehow find sufficient land to sustain all life. It wouldn't happen without the loss of a lot of life. (Mass immigration into cities started because of industrialization. Improvements to human life...) I really cannot fathom a simple solution to this giant clusterfuck of a mess.

+Mike Interesting thought. There is technology available according to many that would make the gasoline engine obsolete. So that there would essentially be no need for oil. But apparently, that technology is suppressed and not allowed to go onto the public market so that Big Oil can continue to make billions. But maybe you can help bring the technology to the public sector. Including power plants that are truly "green".

If you don't use lots of oil you are going to loose your home, because very job requires driving and /or operating motorized equipment.

It's not the oil. It's the greed and other geological factors.

I wonder if the diplomatic cables which leaked and ended up on wikileaks were authored by Kiriakou... There are a few long cables from 96-97 that directly address human rights abuses in Bahrain...

One step further: The USA's o-called "national interest" has nothing to do with the American people Kiriakou refers to; the National Interest means, solely, the interests of US Oil Corporations (and their many business partners). Perhaps one could speculate reasonably that G. H. W. Bush would have concerns about voters paying higher prices at the pump; this would be an ancillary consideration (if one at all) - pleasing his bosses at Exxon et al would come first.

3:00 national interest the Kuwaiti wants the Iraqi out. but who gave green light to the Iraqi to go in.... the US was training for "dessert storm" years before . kuwait being a small country next to US friend Sadam. what easier way to secure oil for the US than having Sadam enter Kuwait and than the US enter as "hero" to push them out again and at the same time making big arms and oil deals with Saudi.
