Reading about part of inspiration for this, the mention of Stephen Stills and Sisyphean....I had to put this here as a public service. Such a great song. His piano on this, and the sweeping choruses (which I think includes Rita Coolidge. ). I'll add it as a reply, I think the KZbin editor doesn't like links in comments.

Radio won't touch it! They're not interested in quality music they're interested in profits they're missing a niche that is highly profitable but often underused Americana! Hornsby played with the Dead! Everybody knows about Pat Metheny and Hornsby and Jerry Garcia and harbor lights! But everyone thinks about Bruce Hornsby in the range! So good! I have to ask, the synthetic that plays behind Bruce's piano, is that a gadget he has set up to mirror his key hits, or is that JT?

I'm pretty sure he has a midi attachment that can mirror a range of keys on the piano to provide the synth in the background. I've also seen him with a synth on top of the piano and reach up with one hand on the synth and one on the piano.

It’s a now discontinued device from Moog called “PianoBar” that is essentially a MIDI controller that sits on the key bed of an acoustic piano. I read an interview with his engineer where he said they use a laptop for the synth sound and the PianoBar is the controller. He occasionally has the Korg M1 with him on solo shows as well.
