Agreed! I prefer totes any day. So much easier to control things.

Looks super try, I have a vermibag max and I’ve been happy with it.

I’m curious about the vermibag. I’ve never seen one before so I’m not sure if I even have all the parts.

@@rhw7879 hey Rob, sorry got Covid this week and it’s completely knocked me out. Was hoping to winterize worms this week but have barely been functioning. What’s up?

@@OurSustainableJourney oh no!!! Feel better. Was wondering if you sold some red rigglers?

I have the urban worm bag they sell cross straps to stabilize the system. I have mine wedged between two shelves that hold my other systems. Honestly if I was up to building a stand I would get a Vermibag. it's definitely worth the extra cost just because it is much higher quality.

Good to know. I just wish it was built originally so you didn’t need to anchor it so it doesn’t fall apart.

I suggest to keep them separate from your own herd for at least a few months until you know it is safe. Till next spring, maybe? I was "gifted" a friend's farm last year who no longer wanted them. I devided the contents among my bins and now they all have SHB (small hive beetles). They are still in my 2 x 4 CFT (really bad in here) and 2 - 10 gal. totes. Don't know how to get rid of them. Tried DE, didn't work. Didn't look that the beetles came to the top, usually caught some around globs of food and substrate below it.

SHB in our bee hives get trapped in cheap unscented swiffer sheets. I’d try that in them maybe it’ll work in worm bins, too. We always quarantine animals (like new chickens) so I think it makes sense to do the same with the worms.
@sueliem7552 жыл бұрын
@@OurSustainableJourney I did the Swiffer trap, even sprinkled some honey in the middle. Did the CD case trap. Nothing, not one. Got a few hundreds by handpicking and I'm sure there are many more in there. It's a losing battle I tell you.
@OurSustainableJourney2 жыл бұрын
@@sueliem755 could you bait them out with pollen patties. I’m sure that would be really tedious but the worms don’t chase them into a trap like the bees do.
@sueliem7552 жыл бұрын
@@OurSustainableJourney Thank you for the suggestion re. pollen patties. In the meantime, I have used cantaloupe & other melon kind rinds as bait, 4 or 5 layers on newspaper (sheet), with the rind placed like a stack of saucers. When I checked after a few days, got like around 50 SHBs but only 2 larvae. This is very time consuming and seems like a losing battle and this CFT is kind of doomed. Just thinking, atleast thes 50 or so SHBs will not be reproducing.

Did you consider cycling the bedding and worm bins through your CFT‘s instead of keeping them separate, Steve? My vote for the second kitten is Cosmo. They’re adorable! ~ Sandra
@OurSustainableJourney2 жыл бұрын
Definitely! I want to see what comes out the bottom, but most likely we’ll cycle it through our own process.
