Keeping my second hand soil in a bin would increase its likelihood of being reused instead of a pile in the back. The little tips are always appreciated

My problem is the second hand soil buckets and piles seem to only grow and never decrease! I just re-potted some agave into larger pots and used some of the scrap soil but it feels like a bottomless tray....

good call on the adult potting mix... I use it for all stages, even sprouting!! Thank you Mr whimshit for the request! Great request, and great video! I use coco coir and perlite 50-50 for sprouting and then I add bio char to the mix for adults! the bio char does strange things when I used it for sprouting...

I was thinking when I was listening back, what if I started them in the adult mix? Experiment time! Thank you for the info, Mark!

Ohh I should do a three year update! I lost one over the winter but all the others are still alive. The bottom of the big saguaro that broke in half is still standing and looking alive!

So cute! I feel on the heat, here in SE Texas - where it is hot and humid - the night timeline lows (if you can call them that) are just awful. A lot of people do not understand that it is not just the daytime high that is problematic for our plants, it is the fact that there is no cool down at night. The only plant of mine that is really happy is my pachypodium. It is THRIVING outside, where as my barrels are hanging in there... most of my cacti are inside though because the rain (which has not done in weeks) is usually a deluge.

I'm so glad you understand the struggle! It's hard to fathom until you live in it and you go outside at midnight and it's still 100 degrees uggghhhhh.... We're finally getting a little bit of a break with some cloudy days. All my leafy succulents hate this time of year, I lost several plants already, but the Arios Astros and Mamms absolutely thrive in the heat!

I buy pumice from my local cactus nursery, Arizona Cactus Sales, and through my local cactus society. Shipping costs would probably be crazy for pumice... Do you have a local cactus society by any chance? They might know how to best find it

Your seedlings look great in spite of the heat you've had. I'm sorry about your Dad's saguaro. I've seen on the news of other ones dying too. I guess there is a market for saguaro skeletons though for decorating and furniture.

This means you made it to the end of my video, Nancy! It is so sad... There have been so many posts about the fallen Saguaro... too many for one summer. We're finally getting some breaks from the sun these days, some clouds, a little tiny bit cooler. I hope we get some rain soon!

@cookiescacti I always watch to the end of your videos, so I can soak up all the great information! I just purchased an Astrophytum Myriostigma "Kikki" off Etsy. Fingers crossed it survives in my care 🤞. Now, to find the perfect handmade clay pot. I need to revisit your pot unboxing video. PS: it's 1pm here and 65 degrees 😊

Hello! I have a video on how I grow cactus from seed. It shows the lights and materials that I use along with how long I keep the lights on with a timer. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKCmiJ56l5KWj6s Keep in mind that I'm still a beginner myself and still learning. I'm only 2 years into growing cactus from seed so my way may not be the best way.

Thank you for the seedling update! Near the end of this video you showed some of the astros, and I remembered there was some orange rust on some in a prior video. No sign of that now, so I was wondering if you recalled that discoloration, and if it naturally went away or what it may have been. I ask because a have something similar that seemed to be a fungus on some of my collection. Always learning!
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti Жыл бұрын
You have a great memory! The Astro seedlings were suffering some sort of issue this winter, actually probably multiple issues. Some folks suggested it may have been due to lack of air circulation in my shade house which I have a plastic covering on over the winter. I think that was the reason for some of the seedlings and a rust like fungus for the others. I just let them be and as the weather warmed up and I took off the plastic cover, the issues seemed to resolve themselves. It did leave unsightly marks behind but at least the "sickness" seems gone. For the seedlings that manage to live on, I'm counting on them to outgrow the scars. My indoor seedlings are now suffering what looks like rust again. They had it over the winter, then it went away, and now it's back. I have no idea what's causing it and some species of plants are more susceptible than others. Sigh!

@bartlipetri6895 Жыл бұрын
@@cookiescacti Thx for the info! I observed in my collection that 1) adding a circulation fan “helps” and is a good idea. 2) Certain species such as aloe and gasteria fair worse. 3) Splashing organic fish based fertilizers when top watering can initiate an outbreak. 4) spraying with a copper or sulfur based fungicide helps, then bottom watering only. My astros are ~2months old, so far so good. Germination is concluding and now the challenge of attrition begins. Lol

That means you made it to the end of the video! It's so sad... I went to hangout with my parents this past weekend and saw the fallen Saguaro in person. That thing is more massive in person than in pictures! I like your idea. I'm hoping I can get some of my seedlings to some sort of landscape size before transplanting but I also don't want to wait forever for that to happen. My parents' yard is so wild all the critters tend to eat anything that's small and tender. We will figure something out!

How often do you water them and how much water do you give them? Do you have a video watering them? 😊
@cookiescacti
@cookiescacti 9 ай бұрын
Ohh good question. I have not made a video on how I water plants because I'm still not sure if what I'm doing is "right". In the summer I've been watering them along with everyone else, around once a week. I start lengthening the time between waterings in the fall. In the winter I'm letting mother nature take care of the watering this year. Then I'll watch overnight lows to start increasing watering in the spring and then back to once a week in the summer.

Excellent collection. Wonderful. Does grow light actually work without natural light? I have almost no natural light and I wonder if grow lights are 100 percent working. For adult plants and seed growing as well.

Hello, I grew these Saguaro seedlings under grow lights when they were very young. But I moved them outside in my shadehouse probably two springs ago, so I don't know if they would do well under grow lights for a longer period of time. The Saguaro love heat so they probably do the best outdoors if you live in the Sonoran desert. I don't have experience growing them outside of Arizona so I don't know how they would do.

@cookiescacti Thank you very much for your answer. I have some small copiapoa and some seedlings. Unfortunately i dont have the outside option and have access to grow lights only. I wonder if in your experience grow light can totally substitute natural light for copiapoa.

We have the same questions 😊 I'm experimenting myself too. I put some Copiapoa seedlings outside in the shade house. The rest are inside under grow lights. Results are TBD.
