I combined my last 2 videos into one to make them more coherent... I hope that is ok with everyone.

It was a bit confusing at first because I was expecting part 2. Thought I'd re-started part 1and came to the channel to look for the "right" link. That's when I saw the videos were combined. Thanks for the note to jump ahead to 17min.

Hey Olaf thanks for the great videos, I agree with what others have said I prefer it to be in one video instead of two separate ones. Quick question, I know in past videos you have mentioned recording the process of you making your own violin from start to finish, are you still planning on doing that? Just thought I’d ask since I haven’t heard about it for a while now.

You have a range of modern violins, do these vary in shape or is there only one way of making a superb violin?

Nice legs... cute old guy. We saw the mini-me for a few moments a bit ago. I think Olaf was born in Germany, and moved to Australia as a very young person... just my ear. I'd like to know. I'm an old craftsman, and have tremendous respect.

Olaf, Why do makers use spruce for the top and not a more homogenized low-density wood old growth like yellow cedar or old growth hemlock from the northeast USA. It just seems to me that the difference in density of summer to winter grain in spruce really seems to pull cracks over time. Is it tradition or is there a technical reason? We boat restorers get to see wood in the harshest of environs. Love your passion for such an esoteric part of humanity.
@Tintoretto8811 ай бұрын
I am not Olaf, but I remember him saying in a video that the summer grain in spruce gives flexibility to the top plate, while the winter grain makes it stable in the length. You need both. Also the growth in alpine spruce is so slow and stable over years, that the grains are the same width, so vibrations will be evenly spread. Bare wood blocks from spruce already sound great, while tapping them I found out.

Loving all your videos Olaf. Lovely to see the knowledge and care you exhibit in your work. I am curious to hear your views about what makes a "good" scroll? I hear so many (especially those selling a violin) waxing lyrical about the beauty of particular scrolls and I have to say most of them look good to my untrained eye. I got especially curious after I had an old Klingenthal violin that had a scroll that one luthier said was "fantastic" but when I showed it to another violin maker and he said the scroll was "rubbish". To me it looked very evenly edged and deeply grooved and sharp in the carving and even on both sides, but I couldn't say more than that. As a player I know the carving on the scroll doesn't really affect the playing of the instrument but I am really curious as to what experts look for in a scroll.

Hi Olaf, I see other violinmakers choose white glue for these kind of repairs. “It’s needs to be permanently fixed” I was wondering, what is your opninion about that en why do you choose hot glue?
@AskOlaftheViolinmaker11 ай бұрын
White PVA glue is not permanent... I've seen it loose strength after 30 years... It's nearly impossible to remove what's left of the glue... Hide glue was around during the times of the Pharaoh's and still holds... After 2000+ years... And then... You can actually remove it if needed! So hide glue is amazing! New isn't always better.

Hey Olaf. I saw the video you made a while back regarding how the violin changes as you play it. I emailed you and asked if in fact as you learn to play a violin, especially if it is a good one, will the violin sound change with you. I got an email back from a lady, I think maybe your wife, I don't know. anyway she had said that you wanted to make a video regarding this and if I would send in some pictures if any. I sent you some pictures and my story behind the violin. She later told me that you had wanted a picture of me with my violin. I felt uncomfortable in doing so. I was wondering if that email was from your wife or another person who you work with. I have had some people on Facebook hack into my account and my friend's account; even though it is facebook it is not a farfetched theory to think that could happen to anyone's account even if it not facebook. Please let me know. I am hoping it is from you. Thank you for all your educational videos.

Hi, Thanks for the message... It takes quite an effort to make each video as well as a lot of planning and editing. I got your email, as well as a bit of extra information to make the video better. Usually I only mention my clients stories, but decided to make that video because I think it's a great question. It will be published in the next couple of days.

Arrrrrgh! Applying PACKING tape to the bubble wrap??? Does he have ANY idea how many rings of HELL his customer will have to go through to UNWRAP that? Ordinary PAPER tape would work just as well and be so much EASIER to remove.

I believe the customer will be just fine. If a little bubble wrap breaks the person the violin will never be learned.
