Loved the video! ~ I was born in Portugal but moved to America when I was 7. Even though Portuguese was my first language, after living in America for so long, I began to forget my Portuguese. I can read very well and write, for the most part, but to speak it I get nervous because of it not being what it used to be. Now I'm relearning to speak again, practicing every day and also talking to myself in Portuguese! All of my family still lives in Portugal and some of them are coming to America for christmas, so by the time they get here I want to be completely fluent again and have full on conversations without being hesitant to speak. Great idea to use both Portuguese and English subtitles. Also very good advice. One thing I do to help hear all the words is put playback speed at X.75. Then after watching several times at the slower speed, and getting familiar with the words, set playback speed to normal. Thanks for this and all your videos!

I know it's 2 years from this video but damn! Turn the light on! This was really helpful encouraging and fun. Being a musician I'm transcribing lyrics and music which is really helpful. I love especially the love ballads where they really emote the lyrics and emotion. You really love language and teaching adn it really shows. Thank you!

I used to have a notebook full of songs in English that I would write only by listening and then compare to the original lyrics and check my mistakes! Aaah Kkkk que legal :-) I am learning Portuguese and only watch the yellow Portuguese line without looking at your face. Looking at the yellow helps me with pronunciation. The temptation is to look at the English in green but learning a new language we must refrain from trying to translate from one language to the next in our head. Valeu querida :-)

Wow 😍 another awesome video. I didn’t understand a word of what was said in Portuguese but I was able to follow and understand the subtitles. I’m from Cape Town and I’ve been to Rio de Janeiro a few times and fell in love with your city on my very first visit, so much so that I decided to live there for a few months during last year. I enrolled at a language school in Copacabana i.e. Rio&Learn (good school) but the trouble I had was understanding when local Cariocas speak. The same applies when I listen to the radio. So I’m going to take your advice about speaking to myself and start watching soap operas and movies (even if I dont understand) I must admit, listening to you speak in this post, familiarized myself to the sound of the language as whenever I find myself in Brazil....thank you 🙏🏻

This video is absolutely amazing for my listening and comprehension! I am so glad that I found it although I am two years late. I understood about 85% of it first time through, at full speed. I don't know why but I can understand you better than any other native speaker that I have listened to. This is my favorite video so far. No need to speak slower. Natural conversational speed talking is the best. Even though people think it is not. It is so easy to rewind and repeat a phrase. Also you have subtitles posted. I find it extremely effective. Listen, and repeat. Over and over until it feels natural. That is the real answer for learning to speak a language.

Captioned in English and Portuguese is the best way to learn, in this video the captioning is showing up in the tool bar. I can still read it but it would be better higher. I constantly stop, rewind, etc.

Your English is really good. I studied Language Acquisition at Cal Poly Pomona and we learned The Natural Approach Method by Tracy Terrel and Stephen Krashen. Comprehensible Input is so important: understanding what you are hearing or seeing (via subtitles or CONTEXT). Instant feedback is the hardest one to get for adults. As babies we get constant feedback from mamãe. As children we get it from our peers. No one wants to correct an adult so we normally don't point out errors in pronunciation or spelling. So adults DON'T get the feedback they need. So it is very important to find a patient and competent partner to practice with if you are an adult learner. I have heard of some apps to help you practice speaking. !Saludos desde California!

Sou americano, e eu fiquei fluente em português fazendo a mesma coisa. Sempre falava sozinho em português imaginando situações diferentes. Claro que só fazia isso quando não tinha ninguém por perto! Eventualmente, eu comecei a pensar em português. Isso é o segredo. Aí, de repente, parei de ficar traduzindo as palavras na minha mente. Também ajuda que minha esposa é brasileira! Se você não tem nenhum conhecimento da língua, pode começar com curso que ensina em sua língua nativa, e depois de entender como funciona a gramática, pode procurar materiais em português. Tem que se imergir no idioma. Eu ensino inglês para a comunidade brasileira aqui na minha cidade, mas nunca vi nenhum deles tornar fluente. Sabe por quê? Porque eles só têm amigos brasileiros, só assistem TV brasileira, assistem música brasileira, vão à igreja brasileira, e comem comida brasileira. Mas aí quando eles precisam ir ao médico, ao banco, ou outro lugar que precisa de inglês, eles me chamam pra traduzir. Imagine morando num país onde você não fala a lingua oficial! Boas dicas! É bem surreal ser fluente em outra língua, né Andressa?

Para mim ser fluente em uma língua é ter o mesmo conhecimento da língua como um nativo. Como tal acho que fluencia quando se é adulto é algo impossivel. Eu dúvido que aqueles que dizem ser fluentes consigam acompanhar uma conversa de todo o tipo de temas, falado por nativos entre eles. Existe sempre expressoes que um não nativo, nunca ouviu, existe sempre palavras que os nativos criam de acordo com o contexto, os nativos juntam palavras que por vezes o som produzido se parece com outra palavra. Nativos por vezes não terminam a frase, ou cortam preposições nas frases. Aprender uma língua é estar a nadar num Oceano imenso que não tem fim

Concordo plenamente com a parte de que aprender um idioma é nadar num oceano sem fim e que um não nativo nunca vai entender 100% de uma conversa entre nativos, mas isso não significa não ser fluente. A definição de fluência é o que a própria palavra diz, ser capaz de se comunicar de maneira fluente, ou seja, sem pausas. Se você considerar que ser fluente é ser capaz de entender tudo em uma conversa sobre qualquer assunto, então não somos fluentes em nossos próprios idiomas! Porque há diversos temas com os quais eu não estou familiarizada, termos que desconheço na minha própria língua.

I find it funny that you describe english as "beautiful". For most native English speakers (atleast in the US) "beautiful" is not even close to the first word that comes to mind describing their native language (speaking as a native English speaker from the US myself). Is that 1 year course you spoke of an online course by any chance?

"Effective".... "gets the job done". Honestly if you asked most native English speakers in the US that question, they wouldn't know what to say right off the bat. They'd prob be thinking in their head "it's just the language I speak" lol.

Yeah, your English is not fluent... but it's very well understood... You will never speak English as a native speaker of English, but with a bit of elocution lessons, your pronunciation of some words can improve a lot... Prabéns..
