My secret to good coral growth: in my aquarium, the key seems to be having me stop sticking my hands into the tank and everything seems to be doing super well and taking off! (and asking @missaveragereefer to take care of the tanks)

There's been some evidence that the act of putting your hands in tank can affect calcification. Something about the chemistry of the oils in our skin, will cause your corals to stop taking up calcium and alk.
@Desmo1
@Desmo1 6 жыл бұрын
what evidence have you come across to support that notion?
@dogstar77
@dogstar77 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry. That should have read anecdotal evidence. I will try to find the discussion and post a link here for the benefit of all. The gist of it was though that after having hands in the tank there was a noticeable interruption in the tanks consumption of Ca and Alk for about a day afterwards. Again anecdotal but worth considering.
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery
@RipVanWinkle_Nature_Discovery 6 жыл бұрын
Never heard of that but personally I wash my hands before maintaining the system, so maybe any oil on my skin is washed off. That's an interesting point though, it very well could be.
@Desmo1
@Desmo1 6 жыл бұрын
It would probably be easier proving that the chemical you used to wash your hands prior to placing them into the tank has more of an affect to your system than the natural oil on your skin. There are just way too many variables to assert something like the oil on your skin could affect calcification or a systems chemistry, things like tank volume, the individuals skin variables etc. I imagine it would be like blaming your car pulling to the right on the idea that maybe there's slightly more dust on the right side of the car than the left lol.

Sorry to put Brian on the spot here, I also remember reading somewhere from someone reputable that their tank's Alk consumption clearly stopped after he worked with the tank one day (vague, I know). Although he did not say exactly why. I was trying to find that link / post but I could not... will try again later. I came across this when I was researching how to set up proper dosing.

Awesome surprise footage ending. :) A nice location for the BTA would be to move it to the bottom of the drop off of 17G tank. I not sure that would be practical with Mochi in there, though. My vote is don't get rid of the Gorgonian completely. I think it's nice in there and something that not everyone has. Gives character to the tank. I could say a lot more but I think the bottom line is you need a bigger tank, like has already been mentioned in the comments below. Sounds like your trip went well. Show some more footage from HK!!!

I find unless you feed a ton of food to keep their weight up and have enough tank space, the chromis tend to form a hierarchy and pick off the smallest of the school until it starves to death. I used to have and small school of 10 and over the years they died one by one and now I'm at 3.

when are you planing on getting a 120 gallon tank you really need a larger tank. is it possible to fit it in the same spot on the same wall and just shift things down a bit? and maybe increasing your water change schedule since you don't address so many other things it may be the balance you need to stay on top of your diatom blooms and other algae outbreaks

new to the nano reefs, was looking for some help and guidance. I have the fluval Evo 12G tank. The tank is established with coral and just wondering what you feed your coral. I was told to give them cyclops, also wondering how often you have the lights on. Im growing a lot of green hair algae.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 6 жыл бұрын
Hey David, it really depends on what type of corals you are keeping; for my tank I feed the LPS and paly with larger mouth either LRS or Rod's frozen food, usually the meatier bits. I would also do frozen PE Mysis once in awhile although I prefer larger pieces for my LPS. I would turn off the pump and gently blast my zoas with a mix of cyclops, Reef Roid, Reef Chili, Coral Frenzy every once in awhile... to be honest I have not seen much reaction, but I figure the more variety of food the better. Currently I am running around 6 hours light schedule as I am experiencing some diatom of my sand bed, things are a bit unbalance in the 45g at the moment. As for your green hair algae issue, there are many ways to skin this cat, the easiest may be decreasing photo period, feed less, and do weekly water change to export nutrient (be sure to use RO/DI water). Next step may be trying a little GFO if you can fit a media basket or filter in the back area. Good luck!

It’s weird, I never used to hesitate to put my hands into the water but then I got a bit concerned, don’t really know why. So I bought some shoulder-length disposable poly gloves and now if I need to do anything in the tank - even just reach in with long tweezers to reposition a coral - I always put one of the gloves on. If I need to do detail work like gluing corals, I put a nitrile exam glove over top because the poly gloves don’t fit well in the hand area - they’re more just a barrier. Point is, I can’t bring myself to put my bare hands in any more. I’m worried about what I might transmit, especially with dogs and cats around and after handling them. I figure when it comes to a reef tank, it can’t hurt to be more careful even if it isn’t completely necessary. And I’m also a fan of a lush, wall-to-wall coverage look in a reef tank. I love when things grow well and fill in. Interesting video!
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 6 жыл бұрын
+Reefgrrl I was looking for shoulder length gloves and only came across what looks like purple dish washing gloves and it looks quite bulky so I did not get it. Putting the exam gloves over poly gloves for the hands is genius. 👍👍👍 you are right, can never be too careful!
@Reefgrrl
@Reefgrrl 6 жыл бұрын
Here are the ones I bought: amzn.to/2h7dpp7. If I’m working for a longer time with them on, I put a rubber band at the top of my arm to keep them in place. I learned that they can leak at the seam if they are pulled out of the box on an angle, so I’m careful to pull them slowly, straight out. I’ve not had any leak since I figured that out. The exam glove over top was in a review and it is a great idea. I also put a rubber band around my wrist when I use the extra glove, so it gets less water in it. Less water everywhere that way! 😬

Do you think your tank is growing better now because you aren't using chaeto anymore in addition to not putting your hands in the tank?
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 6 жыл бұрын
That I am not positive about since I have not tested my phosphate level in a long time, so it's hard to say if the tank has detectable phosphate or if those were soaked up by other bad algae. I think not putting hands into the tank and stability were the key for sure. Chaeto I am not sure.

I think your real issue here is that you need a bigger tank lol. The hands in the tank thing IMO is a misrepresentation of what you actually mean, Changing things all the time is more accurate. I have my hands in my tank all the time but not really changing anything and the changing/disturbing aspect is what potentially could be a negative. Changing your light fixtures frequently is much more likely to cause your tank an issue than putting your hands in your tank.

I don't spot feed the pair when I feed the fish (every night), the goby dashes out and compete for food. When I feed the corals (once or twice a week), I do squirt a bit towards the cave for the shrimp. I need to remember to make a feeding video, great idea (again)!

Hopefully you are planning a tank upgrade soon, as your tank is way overcrowded. I feel bad for the animals all crammed in there together, as well as for your 11 thousand followers who are watching your poor husbandry practices and thinking this is okay! These animals are at the mercy of their owner, and although they may appear to be growing, they are certainly not thriving. Countless euphyllia corals + monti cap in a 45 gallon tank with that many fish = a recipe for disaster. Have you ever heard of sweeper tentacles?! Planning and researching these animals before throwing them all together in a tiny glass box would have been the right thing to do. Don't even get me started on that poor Ritteri. On a positive note, your clowns are awesome!
