I'm only about 6 minutes in, but I already know I would watch this even if it was 2 hours long. The way you talk to the camera, think and talk to yourself when you solve problems is just so well synced with my own brain, even when you get distracted. I love it!!!

I love her videos, she's just on my wavelength. I look at most, even those I'm subscribed to and, perhaps, are more my main interest, but if they're more than 10 minutes or so long then I can't be bothered to sit through them, but with these I don't even look to see how long they are. They're just brilliant.

It's kind of wonderful that she uses filming as a way to body double, and so many of us tune in to use her videos in a similar or the same way. Such a specific wavelength, and it's comforting there are so many others on it 😊

I’ve think I’ve seen every one of these garments made. As a 60 year sewist may I share some thoughts? 1) matching fabric to design(pattern) is tough and one of the things I spend the most time on,type of fabric, stretch, weight, practical for purpose, affordability. Knits are fabulous but if you want to increase skills you have to work on stable fabrics. 2)Prewashing fabric is essential, it’s a good step for just getting started on a project when energy might be low. Then press the fabric before cutting. 3)make friends with patterns, especially the markings. People who make them have a particular skill, lean on them. 4) Press, press, press. Never cross a seam with a new seam without pressing. Thank you for all the moments spent over your sewing machine. P.s. buy a serger

I'm so glad I jumped into creating clothes AFTER I'd seen a LOT of Costube / sewing stuff. I learned that the minute a fabric walks through my door, it goes down to the laundry room and does not join my stash until AFTER it is clean. If I can't wash it, I'm not going to wear it. (The ONLY exception to this rule is a gorgeous wool I picked up to make my dream coat, which I am OK sending to a dry cleaner.) It might hang out in the laundry pile for a week or so, but everything in my stash I can grab at a moment's notice!

You are a girl after my heart. 15 years ago I lost my husband, my way of coping was to get in my car and go somewhere, walk around the shopping area, buy a little something on sale and bung it in the wardrobe. It grew!!! I have quite a roomy house and two empty wardrobes in unused bedrooms as well as my own. I got ill, now I have had to give up driving and I am going through my stash of hardly ever worn clothes. It is the greatest fun. I have always sewed so I can bring some garments up to date, alter, lengthen or shorten or send to a charity shop. I have a deadly sin no 8! Old age is quite nice if you can sew your way into being in the best dressed category. PS. I look years younger because my wardrobe is up to date and I am using up my treasured laces and trimmings gathered over the years.

To everyone who is afraid to start sewing: Don't be. Start simple, like a boxed tee for loungewear (or start with bags when you have no experience at all). Start with homewear and pyjamas. Just make sure you get fabric that you actuall want to wear - i personally have gotten rid of all my synthetic clothing since i started sewing, if i put so much work into it i want it to last and be a joy to wear. Don't opt for cheaper stuff if you don't really like it, there's nothing worse than having put hours into a garnment and then not wearing it cause it gives you rashes. And take your time, especially with your first pieces. Don't be discouraged by failure, they are an important part of improvement.

As Yoda said, “Failure, the greatest teacher is.” You’ve come such a long way I two years, especially since you rarely use patterns and just wing it! tight red-pink pants my beloved! It's obviously completely your choice and if you're too uncomfortable in them to bother fixing them of course recycle them, but they look SO good and I love them so much and I was so impressed when you just made functional pants first go because pants are so hard and yours are so impressive!! So maybe you can try fixing the waist or doing a couple little upcycling/alteration things to them to make them more comfortable, because I'd love to see them again! Also definitely yes to lining the hood of the hoodie dress!

Ive been sewing off and on for close to 50 years (my mom started teaching me needlework when I was a preschooler). Three years ago I started going to a weekly sewing day at a friend's house, and it's been so great! I rarely get time to do any kind of sewing at home. Your videos are definitely inspiring me to do some more clothes sewing, but right now I'm in sewing for grandbabies mode, baby quilts, burp cloths, all the sweet soft flannel things

Very tempting to make one for myself once I get a clearer idea of how it's made. If you can bear it, line the hood but not if it'll kill your love of the garment. This was a great video for someone who has not sewn very long. You have to always give yourself grace, and it is good to see that you do. Some of the fails were definitely fabric, so the fails should be divided into fail because the sewing was horrible (which you did not have any )and failed because a crappie fabric was used. Overall, I would agree with you that you are getting better in both selecting fabrics and sewing the garment. I've been sewing a long time and still have fails, just fewer of them. Keep sewing and, more importantly, enjoy the process 😊

Great video, interesting to revisit past projects and see what worked and what did not. RE: fixing mistakes. I have watched the Great British Sewing Bee, and one of the judges is a Saville Row tailor (ie formally trained professional) and he stated that the best tool a tailor could have was a seam ripper..... I think the most useful thing you could do is review fabrics - some just will not work no matter how cute - the way they are made dictates their use. For instance, blackout backed curtain fabric is too stiff to drape well on bodies. 4 way stretch fabric (is a bugger to sew) is designed for swimsuits and leotards - clings rather than drapes. etc. I really enjoy your videos and am always surprised you have been doing it such a short time and are so adventurous in design and challenges. I have been sewing 60 years and still suffer nerves over some things. And yes, I wear garments I have made, especially a pair of widelegged pants. I also knit and crochet tops. My wardrobe additions this year (bar underwear) are exclusively handmade or Thrifted. Very pleased with the results and get lots of compliments. Keep on Sewing on. Love from Oz. Sally

I appreciate the recognition of how much trial and error is involved in learning how to sew and just find the designs that work for your body. I've been sewing my own clothes for decades, and it's tempting to just keep sewing the exact same clothes in familiar fabrics forever. Just cut them a little bigger in strategic areas if I gain weight.

One thing I know you can do with things that don't fit is take out the side seams, and add more fabric in there, either matching or contrasting. So for some of your dresses that you like but don't quite fit, a strip of fabric under the arms would probably fix that. (You can also cut anywhere else on the garment and add fabric there, but the sides are usually the safest place to do so cause there's fewer weird curves)

For any sticky zippers you can try rubbing it with the graphite part of a pencil. I’ve had a lot of luck with this trick on backpack zippers and (where I learned this trick) the sticky joints of flutes and piccolos that cleaning doesn’t help with.

So many of the dresses could be worn if you added bra strap holders, clips? I can’t remember what they are called but they are ribbon with a snap that you sew to the shoulder seam. Wrap it under your bra strap and snap in place. No slippage. You can pin to to figure out perfect placement and hand stitch in place.

You know, I didn't sew much yet, I think maybe 10 or less wearable products. I must admit that sewing something actually wearable is so awesome, so satysfying as you describe it. I had that one pair of self-made pyjamas pants which I wore to death and had to throw it away because of holes in places that definitely shouldn't have holes. And I must say, throwing away a piece of garment that had been used so much that it can no longer be weared is just as much satysfying as creating a new piece, because it means that it was used and loved and was an absolute success. Worht it!

For the ones you're saying you could upcycle but you wear them as they are and it doesn't bother you that much, I'd say probably just leave them. The hoodie and the one with embroidered bees are the exceptions. Lining the hood sounds like it would make a huge difference, rather than just the small differences I imagine with the others you describe in that category. And the bees are just super cute. I love them enough that it feels like a shame to put it in the costume category and not really wear them much. I'd love to see you take that embroidery work and remake it into something you'll really enjoy wearing and showing off

The skirt you aren't sure about with the yellow and grey diamonds would make a really nice bodice to a top/dress. The orange tiefront top would work if you have another top under it and used the orage top as a jacket rather than the top itself. Id wear the bee dress as is to the shops or somewhere. It's so cute and so fun. If you added a little bit of elastic to the shoulders or neck or a couple of the dresses it would help pull them up and hold the sleeves in place

Charlie, I made a comment on the original blue hoodie dress video. You shoukd be able to line the good without removing it. As for the black dress, pop it inside out and sew a little seam that angles towards the shoulder like a dart, but is exactly the same angle towards the edge. So that the facing gets a seam too, but does not get biggger than the opening. Less work that way. One of the other "im not 100% on it, but Im putting it back in the closet dresses (light greenish) could easily be upcycled into just a skirt as well. And the things you dont wear much due to lack of things to go with can be taken with when you go to the store and just find fabric to coordinate and make the items to go with.

I vote to line the blue dress hood with a scarf type of fabric. You probably can do it without taking off the blue hood.

You should do this same thing with the store bought clothes. Back in, upcycle, recycle/donate!

right around 22:30 you were talking about these tops you dont have anything to wear with because you ditched the pink pants. seems like a great opportunity to make pants that will go with all those tops

One thing i learned sewing for myself was that i have a small torso. Crop tops is a no no same for big waistbands. It seems you have also a small torso so if you would only make smaller waistbands it would look a bit better. Peplums are a good addition to tops. It is quit a journey to figure out what fits you and what you like.

Add me to the list of people who started sewing because of watching your videos! Not nearly as prolific tho.. 😅 Oh, but I did find out about a local crafting reuse store from watching you as well! Going there is a great part of my week.

About the dark purple dress: you don't need to upcycle it, it's perfectly fine the way it is, but im personally interested in seeing how altering shoulder seams works! So for video reasons itd be worth it!

I absolutely love your channel. I stumbled across it a couple of months ago, and it has really inspired me to get back into my own sewing projects. My goal for 2024 is to sew at least 1 wearable item every month.

1. Love seeing this. So happy to see someone else just like winging it. You're 1000% more succesful at winging things than I am. I tried making myself 2 suits and its meh. Bug boobs and broad shoulders with suits is hard. 2. That blue and white dress with blue panel is super cute. If you have any of the blue panel fabric left you could totally do a 1 to 2 inch collar to fix the wide shoulders. If youre worried about the knit not being sturdy enough you can combine it with a bias cut interfacing of some kind. Id love to see it!

Well, I sound like I am writing the grandma's hints for sewing and fabric... BUT... here we go.... when a zipper is hard to get up and down, rub soap along the teeth on both side... NOW ! the fact this is a black top... you will either need to find a black soap or take it to the cleaners before you run a light soap over the zipper and ask them if they will be able to get the light color off the fabric !

I definitely have several dresses I want to make. Raising a toddler is a constant obstacle unfortunately. I’ve been sticking to small projects that I can batch, tea wallets and elastic pen holders that go around a journal. It gets my fingers on the fabric but I don’t have to try and remember where I left off.

I am lured, I’ve already started. I have a few tops down and I just made the most perfect fitting pants, out of sheets that can’t leave the house, but I have the pattern down. 👍😊🥰 I have to get that mccalls pattern!

If a skirt/dress lacks pockets, it really needs to be given pockets! But regarding what you'll were and what you'll not, is not up to us to decide - it's a very personal thing. Both of the critised split side skirts are totally fine, though! I'm glad you don't let others' opinions to discourage you from wearing them. Taking the shoulder seams of the black dress in sounds like worth the effort - it's not such a huge thing. The neckline of the previous dress is more of a hassle, so maybe just wear that - but you can always rethink that decision later. And you're indeed able to throw stuff into the recycle!

For the (black?) dress that needs fixed shoulder seams. I'd be lazy and either put it back in the closet, or add little ties on the back/shoulders that would prevent them from sliding.

I feel like I literally found my twin! Haha the camera also makes me feel like I have a friend and I love talking hahaha. I also thrift most my fabrics and the way you complain about the certain type of bedsheets had me laughing haha I have the same complaints I feel so understood in this video 🤣 we must be friends 😂 I also make my own patterns or freehand my designs. Oddly I haven’t made a skirt just a ton of dresses but this made me wanna make skirts 😅

Add a lining to the hoodie dress, but don't do it in velvet! Unless you like feeling like your hair is constantly being pulled.... take a scrap of the velvet and run it over your hair. On my hair it catches and pulls and would drive me batty in a minute! Might I suggest finding a fun and pretty lining material? Oooohhh... you know the 1930s slip dress that Closet Historian made last year? Out of the blue beetle fabric? I just saw on Mood that it's on clearance AND it would look GORGEOUS with your blue velvet. Also, the crushed velvet is giving me so many flashbacks to high school in the 90s and EVERYONE wearing crushed velvet to homecoming! Mine was forest green and I thought I was the most gorgeous creature on the planet. :D Also, I'm reminded of Frock Flicks' tagline - "Crushed velvet is not historically accurate." :D
