I'm an engineer, work on some of the most difficult advanced engineering in the world. Wife says... "Sewing machine won't stagger stitch." Brent says, "I'll fix it." (Quietly, Brent Googles the issue, and watches THE REAL Sewing machine engineer Miss Taylor, show BRENT, how to do it.) Brent quietly goes up stairs, easily fixes the issues. Brent is rewarded. OMG I love you. I literally almost lost my mind last night when my machine suddenly stopped zig zagging. Seriously, after 40 years of sewing, I felt like I was going insane with the settings selectors and looking through the manual to check my settings. Your video so clearly explained the problem and how the machine works. OMG - seriously, I love you

@Niler Taylor. This video is really clear and well made. But it is wrong!!! The hook is on the piece that was pulled out. The thing you call the hook is not the hook. And the hook actually hooks from left to right (on your machine), not from right to left. And it should meet the needle just above the eye. And it should do that when the needle has lifted .092" (or 2.2 mm). And, to make that happen most often the adjustment is with the rotary position of the hook (adjusted under the machine), not the needle bar height (what you showed, which is also part of timing). I believe that what you did happened to get your machine working. Lowering the needle does often help the hook catch the thread loop. But not always. And it can also cause problems because there is not always space for the lowered needle for the full stitch cycle. Basically, however, it is some kind of fortuitous coincidence that your repair worked for you and works for other people. In short: the alignment you demonstrate in this video is not the desired alignment of the actual hook and needle. The steps you show are close to, but not the same as, the steps for one of the three adjustments for needle timing. You can think of the three parts as hook rotary position (left-right on your machine), hook distance from the needle (which is key, but is not adjustable on some machines and if it can be done, it is done quite different ways on different machines), and needle height (which you showed how to adjust, but didn't show correctly what height to adjust to). Some machines also need the feed-dog timing set. If the feed dog timing is off, the fabric will move while the needle is in the fabric. This will bend the needle a bit when it is down which can cause skipped stitches, tangles and broken needles. All of these can be done by mere mortals, you don't need a degree from sewing machine repair school to do these. But it is a bit more involved than what you show. There are lot of videos on the internet about these things. I think, however, that if you made one it would be one of the best because you speak so clearly, have such a pleasant tone, and have such good video work. I would be more than happy, really, to help you with this. Like you, I like to help people. And helping such an effective helper like you would be an extra pleasure. Thanks for pointing this out! I thought I was going mad there for a moment. Everybody in the comments were so happy with the instructions, but that is not the hook, nor was the procedure correct. So how come it worked? The hook has a very sharp pointy part, almost as pointy as a needle, that passes by the needle as it is on the way up. The tip of the hook needs to pass the needle slightly above the eye. I am happy that everybody is happy, but I don't know why. Have we discovered a new way of timing a sewing machine?

I think this is why my Singer does straight stitches, but none of the fancy zigzags. I also have a Brother embroidery machine that won't sew at all after I ran into a pin; I knew that something had probably knocked it out of alignment. I will have to check both machines and see if I can fix them. Apparently the sewing machine places around here are dubious. I have heard too many stories of people getting a basic servicing and ending up with machines that no longer work. Not to mention the cost. It didn't occur to me until just now that I might be able to fix them myself. I forgot my golden rule which is that you can learn to do anything on KZbin.

The thing you were calling the hook is actually the shuttle carrier. It's actually what drives the shuttle from side to side in the hook raceway. Put the shuttle back in the machine and time the slight rise of the needle to the sharp tip of the shuttle. This is what grabs your upper thread and wraps it around the bobbin case, catching the bobbin thread and forming a stitch. Essentially, between each stitch, the thread is twisted into place between the holes. I hope I made sense. Not hating, just helping. Cleaning and proper oiling of the machine are also a huge help after you've timed your machine. Have a blessed day! 😬

My Brother machine was experiencing the same symptoms as described in the video above. It would only sew straight stitches without skipping. My husband and I were prepared to do the timing repair but first he told me to check the needle, that it looked like it was going to far down. So before you go to all the trouble to try to reset the timing. Try this! Check to see if your needle is inserted all the way into the shaft that holds the needle. I did as he said and sure enough the needle was not inserted all the way! I had broken a needle and when I replaced it, I did not slid it all the way up. That was all that was wrong with my machine! WooHoo. However I will come back to this video in the future Niler, if need be. You really did a great job with the video and made me understand way more about my machine than I have ever known.

I have to comment on this video, I can't let it go. You remove the shuttle hook, the part that picks up the needle thread, and set it aside, then point to the shuttle hook driver and refer to it as the hook. The shuttle hook driver has a shaft that extends through into a gear box and has a gear on the other end secured with set screws. This is where you likely will have to adjust a timing problem on the machine shown, so not as easy to do as your viewers percieve it to be.

Hopefully I will be able to repair the reason why my zigzag stitching skips often. On a side note you wouldn't know where I could find an accessories case which slips on by the foot there would you? Sadly a previous repairman kept mine and claimed he didn't and for over 20 years I've been looking for a new one.

that's a' better description than the so called sewing experts can give, or at least it's the better description i've found online about straight line hands on example, without assuming everyone knows what's being talked about, so you show it simple. like this one tutorial, obviously someone very educated in sewing machine repair, shows how to adjust hook timing for a topload bobbin, which is easy to understand, but unless i heard it wrong (after 4 times of replay,) he said the needle in a zig zag setting cannot be moving from side to side (zigging or zagging,) when the needle is in the thread, and that was also easy to understand, only i can't figure out if that is completely reliant on the hook timing. he mentioned the gears closest forward by the needle bar can be adjusted, only my machine singer 2662 doesn't have those gears on a shaft, it has flat linkages that move from the big barrel of stitch settings back by the motor end of the machine. the hook timing looks fine, but still the needle goes into the material and then does its sweeping zigzaging and it carries the material back and forth with the highest foot pressure even. so the outcome is all the zig zag settings almost all have the same patterns of like swaying S. i might look at the needle bar screw, only that's for the hook timing, that's where I get lost.

This video is soooooo frustrating. It shows you how to fix the timing just fine...on a side loading bobbin only. AAARRRG! I really needed this video to show swing on a needle arm adjustment for a top loader with a different configuration (read; Kenmore/Janome/Elna, same vintage machine as your White.) It is a good, well done video. I just wish that my search results would have given me a video where you showed those points on even a Singer, which at this vintage, is the same configuration basics as any of the above mentioned top loading sewing machines.

I'm so sorry my video wasn't helpful for you. I'm not familiar with top loading bobbin machines. I share the video with the machine that "I" use. I truly do hope you find a video on how to fix your problem for your mahcine. Thanks for watching.

@@NilerTaylor-relindesigns Sorry, it's not your fault, I just got frustrated that I cannot seem to find any videos on top loading machines of that vintage. Please excuse my frustrated post. Your video was very informative, just not something I was able to glean for information. Great channel though.

Hello Niler, thanks for the video. I did check that the needle aligned well as you showed it here. However, my sewing machine still won't do zig zag. I saw another video and it shows that the needle moves a little sideways when it does the zigzag. Mine won't do that. I opened my machine and everything is in great condition (in my opinion). Thanks in advance for the help.

Awesome video, but I have a question. What if your machine does a fabulous straight stitch, but is not doing a zig zag? Do you still adjust timing for zig zag if the straight stitch is perfect? Anxiously awaiting your answer. Thx you soooo much!

hello Niler is this the same for all stitches? thanks
@dereksmith17744 жыл бұрын
It takes a little time but all it takes is a Allen wrench to adjust timing mine was missing so many stitches that it wouldn’t even do zig zag so I took it apart and dropped the bar down just a tad bit that holds the needle and it will drop the needle down for the thread to catch the running hook just don’t go to far it will bend your needle
@Msrebelgirl863 жыл бұрын
How do you adjust the bar to match up with the hook

I understood everything you explained except for: 1.) am I turning the wheel to move the needle into position or am I sliding the needle bar manually. 2.) then once the needle is in position is that when I tighten the screw back up? Thanks

I have the exact same machine, but I don’t see the “hook.” My machine has been mostly unused for years. I’ve cleaned and oiled it, but no zig zag. The mechanism that moves back and forth will only move manually. I’m confused and can’t figure out if the timing is the issue since I can’t tell what the hook is.

Have you figured it out yet?
@bassoonmom89144 жыл бұрын
sportster davidson Yes! This wasn’t the issue at all. It just needed a good oiling.

Thank you for this video! I don't have a White sewing machine; would this be the same for other major brands also?
@NilerTaylor-relindesigns7 жыл бұрын
Could be. Most machines are like cars, having "a basic" make up. Check your operation manual also, sometimes there are trouble shooting tips there.
@cuteyalexia7 жыл бұрын
Your machine looks similar to my machine that has timing issues. I have a Necchi model 921 which I can't find any information about it online, but I did find out by chance that it's the same as the Elnita 240. I'm so tempted to fix the timing myself but I don't want to make things worse.
