Thank you for this post. I’m an 80 year old that still cares about how I dress. I have really learned to search for vintage high quality clothes. Your shoe collection let me know that you are an average class man that enjoys looking well. You shop where most of us shop. I just can’t do 4 and 500 dollar shoes. And at my age they don’t need to last 20 years. Keep up the fine post

Not only are you missing black dress shoes but a couple of pairs of cordovan also. A pair of cap toes and a pair of classic wing-tips really dress up a suit. You are also shy on just a good old pair of Bass Weejuns. You can dress them up with chino's or dress them down with jeans or even sockless with a pair of shorts and the more you wear them, the more comfortable they look. Other wise, great collection.

I have that same problem with the back of a shoe rubbing and breaking the skin sometimes. Dr. Scholl's makes a heel pad to insert in the shoe which usually corrects that problem. A black leather Chelsea boot is a great addition which can look good dressy and with jeans. Plain toe, elastic sides and no extraneous details. Sleek.

Recommendation for black shoes? What about Allen Edmunds? You seem to like them a lot, AE has tons of styles of black shoes and, if you take care of them, they will last nearly forever. I only buy Allen Edmunds shoes - - other than the possibly ill-advised but always fun Paul Smith shoes. I have about a dozen pairs of AE shoes, all of which I purchased when I got a new job in the late '80's. That's right, they're 30 years old and still going strong. Sure, I've had them re-crafted a few times, but I think of that as just being part of regular care and maintenance. You know as well as I do - - you can't go wrong with Allen Edmunds.

Biggest mistake I've ever made is not investing in good quality shoes when i was younger, something I have now corrected. A pair of good quality goodyear welted shoes will last you 20 plus years. So paying $350 is better than buying 3 pairs of $120 shoes which fall apart.

Oh, and go to eBay and buy a ton of wooden shoe trees, your shoes will benefit so much and those creases and bending will decrease. @thesceptic10185 жыл бұрын
I would put on something that best represents my style, go to the nearest high end trunk show and try a whole lot of different shoes & boots. Expresso suede oxfords (Cleverley for example) are flexible and stylish, and some decent Chelsea boots, maybe by one of the Spanish or Portuguese brands (e.g. Carlos Santos).
@MartinOcando2 жыл бұрын
Ok, I’m confused. Talking about dress shoes, you mention that you use shoe trees, but do you have a tree for every shoe or do you only have one tree? For the creases I saw it doesn’t looks like you store your shoes with a tree on them. You should. I have a tree for every dress shoe I own, and they are crease free forever. Not only that, cedar shoe trees help them even more by absorbing moisture and keep the fresh and ready for the next wear.

Every shoe purchase depends on budget, mission, style and maintenance level. For work, I need a stylish shoe that provides comfort for 9 hours of work/walking that holds up to scuffs and has a heel/sole that has a non-slip surface for the marble floors that have water on them (trust me, I have fallen several times from full leather soles that love to slide). I also want dress shoes that have the soles stitched to the main leather shoe, as that allows a cobbler to replace the sole (even with a new sole that I may like better). Many of the shoes now have soles that are glued to the leather or pleather. If you want a great shoe, get full-grain leather shoes with a stitched on sole and work them in, once worked in and with shoe trees and cleaning/polishing, you only need to get the sole/heel replaced every few years at a fraction of the cost. Don't spend $100 on glued shoes, spend more on good stitched leather shoes and realize you can own them for 25 years or more. Some of my favorite work shoes are stitched Florsheim, very comfortable and last a life-time. Once again, spend more for shoes you use a lot and have the ability to be re-soled. For going out shoes, where you want to peacock, sure wear stylish glue shoes, knowing they won't last more than a few years. That's where you have to be careful. Putting a lot of money into stylish but garbage construction shoes that are only used on the weekends is foolish. You want to look at the expensive shoes, but buy the cheap shoes that look similar to the expensive shoes, cuz they wear out anyway or go out of style. Having said that, I get more compliments on my shoes at work and when I go out from women when I wear what I would consider peacock shoes. Women just love them. And yes, women do notice your shoes. If you are hesitant about whether a shoe is too loud, don't be, it attracts women's attention, and isn't that your goal.

This was cool, thanks. I just subbed. I'm 31 and I'm still wearing the same dress shoes from college. I literally have one pair of dress shoes, and while they're nice, I've been trying to make a departure from all the white sneakers I own (yep, me too.) I have to admit that all the talk on brogues and oxfords and wingtips and all of that stuff is kind of intimidating, as is the price, but hearing you talk about it unscripted and casually has given be a little bit better of an idea. It all really started when I got my second tailored suit ever in navy, and realising my black shoes and belt didn't go as well as brown would. I'm thinking about getting brown penny loafers to just elevate my style a little bit, I'm tired of wearing my NB 574s, as much as I love them!
