None of her projects were done correctly. She checked her past projects and they all had problems. On the new project she was clear, met with her often, questioned if she had vetted the vendors properly, If she didn't understand why not ask for clarification.? Ultimately SIL didn't follow through.

There is a Look at Me which is the shiny new car, the woman was not loving driving the car because of its driving but the Look at me factor. Being able to do Old Money where function is all that matters not the Appearances is different. There is no need when one is wealthy to show off, to buy the latest appliance, latest make up or latest shiniest of anything.

Personally, I think this story ended wrong. Yes, Mary's performance hadn't been up to snuff, but even Rachel acknowledged that she was learning & getting better. It would have been better - & probably actually healed the relationship between the two - if Rachel had stuck up for Mary, stating that while the performance for this client hadn't been up to snuff she thought Mary had promise & could learn to get to the standards the company set with enough retraining. Perhaps Mary could have been demoted to more of a team member role, rather than someone who could be in charge of a project, until she got her act together - perhaps focusing on each element she'd screwed up this time with new projects, rather than trying to take it all on at once - & then try again. Letting her swing, when Rachel was actually a small part of the problem, is just...wrong.
