My Silent Love Garner Errol 1962
Errol , just turned 41, is seen and heard here in a performance in Amsterdam in 1962. Together with drummer Kelly Martin and bassist Eddy Calhoun they bring you My Silent Love.
It is amazing to see, where obviously Errol plays an improvised intro, the bassist watches in anticipation when the great man will come in with the chorus. Errol , after playing about a minute of introduction just turns and smiles , then suddenly with a definite nod, the band picks up and sets in one of these perfect tempos.
What a performer!
Born in 1921 he was a self-taught pianist who never learned to read music, Erroll Garner was nevertheless one of the most popular jazz musicians of the 1950s. His swinging piano and gift for melody kept him on the top of the charts, and his most memorable tune, "Misty" was a pop hit for many different artists between 1959 and 1975

Those fabulous beginnings of Errol are mini-suites in and of themselves and then that delicious groove.

Pure genius! How i wish I was alive when he was alive! He's doing exceptional things on the piano and yet making it look so "easy" and "normal". Bravo!

I was indeed lucky or fortunate to hear this man perform on the piano at my university last century when I was collecting his recordings and knew about his talents. There were then and continued to be recognizable qualities that added up to a certain unique method of creating music. Call it genius if you want. For my tastes it did not get any better than what I heard that evening and afternoon. Remarkable performance that deserved to be heard and praised in those days as much as today. He doesn't look at the keyboard and knows where to place his fingers on the keys that he plays. Inventive and innovative for sure but that was his lasting contribution to jazz piano music. Nothing has been done to discourage me from listening to him today. A separate category of improvisation. To turn away from appreciating and praising his musical accomplishments today is unforgivable. A form of negligence. Our artistic community needs to remedy this problem.

THE INTRODUCTION TO THIS PARTICULAR SONG COULD BE USED FOR ANY SONG. IT HOLDS YOU IN SUSPENSE TO WHAT SONG WILL BE PLAYED. INGENIOUS! THIS MAN LOVES TO PLAY FONDLY WITH THE AUDIENCE. HE IS REALLY A "CUT U P". HIS PIANO PLAYING IS THE BEST AND HE HAS ALWAYS MADE ME COME BACK FOR MORE, NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I'VE HEARD HIM PLAY. SO ENJOYABLE. SYLVIA 4/24/21

One of his flying improvisations without a doubt. Amazing artist with a God-given natural talent for combining rhythm and harmonization - plays with heart and the feeling of the moment. His recording of Concert By The Sea was Jazz Album of the year in 1956. Other individual song suggestions by him are "Stella by Starlight" (played in a totally different genre) and his own composition "No more Shadows" that I particularly like. "Autumn Leaves" from the 1956 album is the best interpretation of the song that I have ever heard with no offence to Roger Williams who brought out the song in the fall of 1954. In France he was named the Picasso of the piano.

Has to be one of Erroll's greatest performances ever. Even by his wild standards, intro a bewildering odyssey of strange, unpredictably building tension. His treatment of the melody so gently sly & insinuating, rubatos so bewitching... Really at his madcap best here. & all this bag of tricks, all this inventive delight, all of it in the service of the music. Glorious

The intro is just NO WAY... apart from being genius on the piano, he has to be the king of the intro of music lol... also the smile on Eddy's face at the end of the intro when Errol turned to him seas it all...

Absolutely incredible genius I was lucky to meet in Los Angeles in the seventies after Sweets Sunday night gig at the Baked Potato where Sass, Sweets and a group of us hung out in Toluca Lake. Erroll and I spoke for quite a while. He died not long after being diagnosed with cancer.

I have listened to Garner for over seventy years I have always wondered why his stupefying technique and styles were not appreciated more. He is, at the very least, the equal of Tatum. Happily, this situation is beginning to change. Many of his renditions are masterpieces. Ultimately, it is difficult, if not impossible to judge genius. Both of the folks are right up there with Vlad Horowitz! Amen
