Congrats on graduating from a top-flight "parts swapper" shop to to getting real panel repair and fabrication tools. Pamel shops are still called "panel beaters" here in OZ but the art is becoming lost to the ease of simply fitting new bits and that is sad. You have some nice tools there and I look forward to watching you learn how amazing it is to use them. Coulton, if you really want to make bowls you need the lathe and to watch some videos on metal spinning, that's an art worth learning. You are a great addition to the team, mate, you've come a long way in a short time and it's good to watch you grow both as an on-camera personality and in your skillset. Robby has a talent for finding good people and you are once again proof of that.
@MrJest2

I agree - and I think that sort of custom metal forming has always been in Robbie's pedigree. But yeah, the "remove and replace" repair model is convenient and fast if not terribly inexpensive, and it kind of "cheapens" the very trade itself I feel. But you're going to pay any which way, either in stock material costs or labor costs, one way or another. But I personally believe the control and art involved in doing it "old school" is worth it. But that's just me; many who are of a more profit-centered mindset may not agree.

Charging 16 volts yes, but how many amps? That's what burned up the wiring. The wires to and from the ammeter (yes you got that correct) definitely need to be heavy gauge. At least #6 for short distances. #4 is even better. #6 is good for 65 amps and #4 is good for 80.

@@sweettee3647 To be fair, I don't think any of them are particularly experienced in automotive electronics. Like most paint-and-body shops, they know metal forming, but everything else is "swap it out and plug it in" and that's it. Yes; it's expensive and wasteful, but they DO appear to be interested in fixing that (to wit, the new metal forming tools). Nothing wrong with learning new stuff, and doing it on your own "toys" is not going to cost them any paying customers or irritated insurance company underwriters. Experiment on your own stuff first is always a good idea. 😋

10:30 "alternator spitting out 16 to 18 volts of power" The same thing happened to me, dude, when I was working as an *Electro-Mechanical Technician* in the Canadian Army in the 70's. The rig was a Dodge truck - with a ballast resistor on the firewall. Two wires from the ignition switch (labelled I -1 and I -2) got exchanged for each other at the firewall plug when a new switch was installed, and thereafter the voltage regulator got its reference voltage from the wrong end of the resistor - thus boiling the battery. Once the wiring was put right - the problem was solved.

Robby, when you use that belt sander with the table mounted, be sure to have a minimum gap between the table & the belt. I've seen people lose half a thumb when the friction grabbed the piece they were working and pulled it down into that gap. It happens so fast when it grabs & flips the metal up that you can't pull away fast enough and it drives flesh into the belt. Same applies to a disk sander, too. You don't want to be like Mike with Trail Mater! 😀

But one has to invest in the right tools first... in the long run, it will pay off.

Whiskers needs atleast a 4gauage OFC Wire going from altenator to the battery also another one from the altenator casing to the chassis ground for a proper ground for whiskers its ultimate no questions asked if its charging enough or not at all and if you put an adjustable external regulator with a digital display gauge so u can see the charge rate and adjust the rate of charge based off its load like if all the lights and accessories are on then adjust it back up to like 14.7 while its loaded down and when its got a light load during daylight when no lights are needed then adjust it down to 13.4-13.7ish and lastly use relays with quality rocker switches to power the relays then out to lights and accessories so you will never have wire burning issue's

Hillbilly, that red handle in the box of tools is a "Car Cane". The metal point goes into the door latch on the car door frame and you grab the red handle to provide support for getting in and out of your car or truck. It is invaluable to disabled people entering and exiting vehicles. I use mine every time I transfer from my wheelchair into or out of cars. Mine lives in my wheelchair backpack for use on any car I'm riding in.

Ditch the ammeter and just use a voltmeter. Standard ammeters require large wiring to measure so much current and they just aren't worth the trouble. Most types of vehicles switched to voltmeters long ago because they are cheaper, safer, and can be interrupted to serve the same purpose as an ammeter.
