I see your potting mix is much, much lighter than the soil my Caladium came in. They used regular house plant potting mix. As you mentionned, water dosen't come out of the holes when watering unless I make it very soggy and that dosen't sound so nice for a Caladium. Probably just bein worried over nothing. After all, they did grow them without rotting and it grows a bit, new tiny leaves pointing through the soil.

We’ve been getting our veggie garden going plus adding grow pots as well. We have 4 tomato plants 4 different types of peppers 🌶. A little spot of watermelons, next green beans, yellow crook neck squash and corn. In the grow pots we have carrots in one, then in another beets, lettuce, sugar peas in the pods, green onions, kale and basil. The grow pots are a new thing, we do have a large pot with potatoes in it too. Saw the felt grow pots on Epic Gardening and decided to try them. Yep, keeping busy...also with my patio plants (succulents mostly) and house plants too. Trying to stay safe, take care and keep safe as well.

Hi Hannah, so good to see you are doing well, and glad you are getting over your cold, they can be a bother in the summer. I like to give my plants an airy mix as well, and haven't thought about adding charcoal, now I think I will. Thanks for sharing you soil mixture and we can all tailor ours to fit our plants. Stay safe and I will see you soon, sending love and hugs, bye for now.

Hi Hanna, thank for the video. Mine is similar: mainly perlite/orchid bark/clay pebbles and a little bit of soil. I re potted some plants last week and tried to replace some of the soil by coco coir just to try. I live in Ireland and I think it is really important to have a well draining mix. It is quite humid here but not super warm, so the soil takes ages to dry if it is not well draining. I tried soil mix from youtuber in the USA and it never worked for me, the soil was taking weeks to become "moist". That is when I started to use a lot of orchid bark/perlite/clay pebbles and it worked much better. Nothing wrong with the mix from people in the USA but it shows that growing medium really depends on where you live.

Terracotta is good for succulent types mainly I find. Also for succulents your advice was good for the soil, but you can use horticultural grit instead of sand and make sure it's really gritty. :) I'm also moving away from soil. Everyone recommended John Innes 2 for succulents mixed with grit and such to make it gritty, but I always found it soggy even when I made it extremely gritty.

Kind of a bit off from the content I work with but it is what I did before martial arts from since I was a kid just planting stuff around. Really interesting what a little mixing can do when it comes to what is under the leaves. Different textures and structures and nutrients in different times for the roots goes so far to do what you want to do or push the limits of your plant.

omg thank you! I have been using burn free fertilizer combined with worm castings and fox farms soil which has perlite in it and coco coir and also peat moss... Thanks for this! Getting a cuprea tomorrow! :) Sorry if this is a dumb q, but when repotting, since your mix is so chunky, how did you take the plant out of it's pot? Didn't all the soil fall off the roots? Or did it come out neatly as one mass and you just place it in the bigger pot and added the new soil? Thank you!

I haven’t had any issues with mine. You can tailor the mix to any plant, maybe the mix needs a bit more coir and less bark? Some plants can sulk after being re-potted, especially if they are still acclimating etc so will depend on situation and environment etc

This mix did not work for me. I was looking at repotting most of my plants, including calatheas and monsteras. I bought all items for the mix as linked. The mix dried out way too quick and soon my calathea leaves started to curl in. I measured the soil moisture and after two days it was nearly dry. Essentially I think this mix combines too little soil to bind everything else and keep the mix moist for longer. I think the percentage of coir should be 60% and the rest the remainder. It was definitely a learning experience but I don’t recommend people follow this mix at the listed percentages.
@TropicalPlantAddict
@TropicalPlantAddict 4 жыл бұрын
Vern Black Vern Black the proportions of mix needs to be modified depending on the type of plant you are potting up, which I mention in the video and description box. Just add more coir for more moisture loving plants like calatheas etc 💚🌿
