What happens when Werner Herzog and David Lynch make a movie together? Come and have a seat with us on the ol leather couch and find out as we watch My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done.
In Seen It, we examine another redeemable A-hole, the genius of Steve Martin and Matt and Craig reminisce about their theatrical careers. We also remember Roger Ebert.
All film footage is used in accordance with fair use and US copyright law. All music in the show is used with full permission of the composer.
Thanks for all the great comments. Keep em coming! If you watch one of the movies we discuss, let us know what you thought of it.
Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
Movie announced on facebook before every new episode. Get the movie and follow along.

Despite agreeing with everything you say about the movie, I still loved it. I just adore Herzog and Lynch so much that I don't care that whole film has no real point. Just sitting and watching all this needless weirdness is just so great.

You guys should do an episode focusing on a weird early 80's movie. Maybe those that tried to capitalize on a music or dance fad popular at the time. Some examples, Xanadu(disco and roller skating) Breakin', Breakin' 2 Electric Boogalo(break dancing). Or maybe just an episode dedicated to early 80's darling Lucinda Dickey. lol

Watch Sound City it is a a great movie about musicians recording at a record studio that in time faces hardship, competition with the digital age, but records legendary albums. Please watch!!! Being a young musicain myself it made me look at the music world differently. All love to all the bands who recorded there especially my favorite band Nirvana.

Since you talked about the shining, I thought I'd mention my recent experience in watching it for the first time. I also wanted your opinions on Shelley Duvall's performance, since I was blown away by it. In every scene she was on screen, I couldn't help but break out of the moment to acknowledge how believable I found it, but was shocked to see that after undergoing some research to affirm my own opinions, she won Worst Actress for the role! Thoughts? I love the show so much!! (ps- Greg is hot)

Thanks for the warning but now I have to see it. I actually think it might be better than you felt on first viewing. As with Tough Guys Don't Dance, it sounds like you've gotten clues to something and there might be something to it but one has to watch it more than once to see it all. I'm sorry, I don't agree with you on The Happening it's one of my favourites. Subtle, subtle. Branagh's MAA0 and Hamlet were the first time I've felt like Shakespeare was completely relatable. Here's something controversial: I didn't find The Shining very scary at all, even though I first saw it when I was a kid. Bonus controversy: To this day, I think Stanley Kubrick is extraordinarily overrated. Now, it may be because nothing could possibly live up to the hype he's given, but after hearing so much about how Clockwork Orange and 2001 were such cinematic masterpieces, I couldn't help but think "That's it? Meh."

After watching Signs of Life, Herzog's first narrative feature, I was surprised to find that My Son, My Son is basically a remake of the last act of that earlier film. Just as Michael Shannon holes up inside his house in My Son, My Son, the final 30 minutes of Signs of Life revolve around a German soldier who suffers a nervous breakdown and takes control of a military stockpile, holding the surrounding town to ransom while his friends and coworkers try to figure out what he wants and how to talk him down

I think the reason Stephen King didn't like Kubicks version of the Shining had alot to do with the fact that in the book the family are very happy until the house begins to influence Jack but in the movie there is tension between them right from the start. Really enjoyed this episode. Have you seen The Kentucky Fried Movie by John Landis.

The film is boring and full of bad acting. Total dud. Watched it today. I love Herzog's movies and complicated films in general, but this was just flat, and so very obvious. It was so bloody apparent that the flamingos were hostages. And all the other clues, like the uncle being a father-figure to him, or him telling that mother made him want piano or drums. It's an amazing story with bad, bland delivery
