As she said, both can be done. I went to a catholic school, it went above and beyond what they taught in public school. And we still learned the religious aspects. Students were accepted from other faiths. My valedictorian was muslim. We had christians, jewish and secular. Those students had a choice to take philosophy. I took it as an elective. Regardless it is done successfully, at the very least allow the families and students to have the option. Then again changing schools is always an option.

Private schools receive a fraction of the funding that public schools get, even though the private school communities are paying the same amount of property taxes (which pays for schools) as the public school communities. This is a load of hogwash. I went to these schools and have an excellent education. The schools provide the necessary education. This woman is someone who went away from the religion and has a bone to pick. This happens in all devout religious schools of any religion where a heavy emphasis is placed on religious studies. There's plenty of equivalent studies, they're blinded by hatred to see it. If you look at education results as your determining factor on education. These kids who attend religious school commit criminal activities close to a zero percentage. Additionally some of them grow to be the wealthiest folks there are. In short there's no laws broken and this women is spreading libel. Oh right this is the New York Blinds which ignores facts completely and accepts fringe opinions for reality.

Thanks for your comment. I believe a good yeshiva education teaches one HOW to think, but in my professional dealings with the Community, I've found huge gaps of knowledge which, if they had had it, would have made them better, more effective professionals, especially in law. While many do go into business, it's also the case that a good number go on welfare; that's not fair to the taxpayer. So, why not have a great education in secular subjects AS WELL AS the religious ones, to produce well rounded students who'll be competent citizens? But yes, the NYT is the NYT! That, I agree with you wholeheartedly on! Kol tuv and hatzlachah!

The majority of Orthodox Jewish schools have great education. The children spend most there (some as long as 11 hour school day) learning religious studies, however they learn all the necessary skills to go out and support their families. Having the government dictate the curriculum in religious schools is a slippery slope.

They already do though according to this video. The law on the books is that they have to teach math and science and English at the same minimum level as a public school, and it is a minimum standard. This woman is saying that for her child and for all but two of the schools mentioned, the education isn’t sufficient to be at minimum standards. Clearly for some they aren’t learning the necessary skills in their schools. I am in a master program and study for about 10 hours a day and I can tell you that I certainly couldn’t do another class on top of that so there is no way the average small child can study religious studies for 11 hours a day and still have time to play and have a childhood AND learn history, math and science.

No one is forcing parents to send their children there, they choose to send to yeshivas because of their religious values. In the age of acceptance and equality etc. not seeing much here. As for public funding, in comparison to public schooling, the yeshivas are a huge savings for the state, check your facts. As a Hassidic yeshiva alumni myself, I can attest to getting a solid basic education, superior to most public schools, as per their test scores. You can have gone thru the yeshiva system and still be extremely successful in the ''real world'', (and being a die-hard Mets fan!).

my sons attended these sorts of schools Two are successful realtors, one is in law school and another training to become a medical technician. These yeshivas offer a curriculum based on classical Jewish texts such as the Talmud which are full of wisdom and logic and advanced thinking skills. Other cultures recognize this---South Korean children study the Talmud because the Koreans recognize it's the power to develop the brain. What she is talking about can be filled in later--my sons attended accelerated catch up programs for Yeshiva graduates and now they are excelling in college. I hope she will learn to see the value in what her son is doing--learning logic, values, and a faith to carry him through this life.

Let’s examine this take with some critical thinking: Point 1 - Your example from your children is what we call an anecdote. It doesn’t tell us anything about the the impact a lack of secular education has on the overall population. Point 2 - While learning the Talmud as a part of an education can have a generally beneficial impact on cognition, that doesn’t indicate it’s an adequate replacement for a well rounded secular education. As we can see from the Korean example, they didn’t replace their secular education with Talmudic study, they added Talmudic study to enhance the education. As another example, we can look at modern orthodox schools which combine Jewish education with a strong secular education. On average, students from those schools are far better equipped and are far more likely to end up with successful careers, and to be positive contributing members of society, than those coming from Chareidi schools. In conclusion, while it’s an impressive accomplishment that your kids are enjoying successful careers in spite of the added difficulties owing to their lack of a good education, their success doesn’t refute the point that children are being harmed by being denied a basic education.
