It's only been a little over a month since my son purchased this 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon TJ with the intentions of making it more capable on the trail and more self-sustainable for overlanding trips. In this video he and I install a Gobi roof rack with the ladders and wind deflectors and then mount a roof top tent on top... great father and son times in the garage!

@On Hawaii Time I can appreciate that... my dad and I had a terrible relationship. I didn't speak to him for over 20 years then found out he had Alzheimers. Didn't want any regrets so I reached out... he'd stopped drinking due to the illness and in the last several years before he passed we became really close friends... it was great, but it also made me realize what we could've had all along. @ everyone that still has their parents....go give them a hug.

As I tell my girlfriend, "Nice rack!" A few years ago I stepped out of a Japanese restaurant in Boulder and spotted a Gobi rack on an LJ. I complimented the owner who said her dad or uncle was a Gobi co-owner, so I hope they're USA-made. Also, you may find that hitch receiver greatly reduces your departure angle, a disadvantage with rock crawling. Ask me how I know. Good job, guys!

I'm closer to my dad than my mom, but we're both socially awkward. He was my den leader through cub scouts, and continued to be a leader through boy scouts,, so he was there for me about 15 years as a leader, and continues to be there as I made eagle scouth, and still live at home, using my leadership skills he helped teach me to get through various jobs. I really think its awesome to see you do the ame with you son, but with active service, and overlanding. Great job, man,

Another TJ Top Tip: loosen the fuel tank bolts (don’t remove them) and you can slide the tank around quite a bit fore / aft and side to side. It’ll help a lot when installing a rear bumper or working on the rear axle and needing more room for your hands (or bolts)

Cool setup. I see the Gobi has a weight limit of about 600lbs which is nice. Of course, getting anywhere close to 600lbs on this rack, could be a handling issue off-roading and something to be aware of. I also read they are prone to leaking/collecting water in the lower portions of the vertical supports - Overall the design is great, I would want one, and the weight capacity far exceeds the Gavin that I've been looking at, and they are close to the same price. I just worry about the leaking and interior rusting. I don't think you gave the roof rack a fair noise test. Driving around the neighborhood doesn't count, get out on the highway and I think you'll hear quite a bit more noise.

How’s that rack going to go over time with being mounted to both the body and the chassis? It may fatigue and crack as the body and chassis move independently of each other.

A rack and roof top tent don't make much sense on a TJ, or Wrangler's in general. You add a ton of extra weight up high on a low-payload vehicle, for the tent and all the framework, and miss out on the convertible factor. Big hit in CG, MPG, and wind noise. Just throw a dome tent in back, especially if you spend less than 2 or 3 days per week camping. Cheapest weight savings you'll ever have.

What I'm wondering about: how much of a pain is it to open the soft top? I always thought one of the best features of a Wrangler is the possibility to remove the top. With a rack like this, I guess you have to undo the front bolts and then you can flip back the rack, open the top and flip the rack back forward to secure the bolts. Pretty much impossible with a rooftop tent on it. So by the end of the day you might as well buy a hard top and glue that in place because the reason to have a soft top is pretty much eliminated by the rack. Personally I would never do that, but of course that's a matter of personal preference. I tow a small camping trailer and therefor don't use a rack which allows me to tow the trailer topless - and that's my very much preferred offroad configuration.
