I got the same one, very good mic, not very wind friendly, but when used with a good wind screen is good for anything. I never use the auto-level, after a pause there is always a high peak and makes you have to correct the audio in postproduction. The noise reduction is alright, I use it most of the time I record outside, unless I want to particularly capture ambient noise. For syncing up audio I always do a clap at the start, classic and effective

Great video tutorial. Heres a free tip: If you own a smartphone, it usually have an audio recorder app. In Iphone its called memo. It will save you the cost of additional hardware, and works great with the standard earbud headset, who has a quite good mike in it. Also, the phone is always in your pocket, so you need to bring less items in your photo bag. For sync timing, its very simple just to clap your hands, which will be visible in the video, and accordingly easy to see the peak in the waveform. Cheers.

Carsten Bruhn can you link up that product? Also do you need an adapter for the lapel Mic or can you plug it straight into the phone.

I use an Apogee ONE for macOS and iOS with an Audio-Technica shotgun microphone. I do some field recording with a Zoom H4n that's come out great. I just got a ClipMic Digital lavalier with a Sennheiser microphone module that will make some field recordings much nicer, and then syncing the audio in FCPX along with the scene and take metadata info the Apogee MetaRecorder app creates with the tracks. I've also used Focusrite 2i2 and an iTrack Dock for other stuff while inside the house but not in the studio. As for settings, I'd only use 48 KHz/24 bit depth. The reason is that the microphones (especially that cheap lav) will roll off over 10 KHz on its own. This means the brick wall low pass at 22.05 KHz (that's for 44.1 KHz, whereas 48 KHz is 24 KHz; the 96 KHz is cut at 48 KHz, and then cut sharply again in the DAW) will have a really aggressive phase twist on cheaper DAWs/plugins that can have artifacts on occasion. The 48 KHz increases the file size slightly but gives you more room to work with in the crossovers. The 96 KHz/16 Bit file makes a huge file to work with. I use that sample rate on some sound design things, but mastering in real time can get glitchy. I use 24 Bit for the depth so I can shift the quantization noise around and still be well below the eventual 16 Bit export. One last thing: you can get audio sync drift in certain situations, as the camera is using field drop cadences for its 24, 30, and 60 FPS settings. You're actually getting 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94 FPS for broadcast with the old 3:2 pull down telecine standard in US markets. PAL 25, 30, and 50 FPS settings shouldn't have a cadence issue. To deal with it I usually recheck the sync and cut out dead parts to line it back up. If you're making short videos or cutting between different sound sources it's almost seamless with no problems.

Great video. Since you are using the Sony A6000, how do you see yourself when recording given that it doesn't have a flip-out screen? What's your work around for that? Thanks

Hi @TechnologyMafia! I have watched a few of your videos and found it extremely helpful! I am an experienced photographer but am starting all over again with a mirrorless system. I decided to start off with a Sony A6000. Would you say the Zoom H1n is the best option for event video? I am looking for something that is similar to a shotgun mic.
@ProduzioniClandestine7 жыл бұрын
There's also a pretty good sony mic you can put on camera, (I guess it's especially made for the a6000) that works also without a cable using the flash connection. I can't find it now on the amazon, but I found it in the camera box and in the store. So you will also have a 48KHz in camera sound track and to use both internal and external you should record 48KHz in your Zoom for the sake of a good sync. I normally combine this "internal" mic and a Zoom H6 in my videos and pretty happy with the results
@Harleyguy035 жыл бұрын
Very informative video. I'm just starting to want to do more videos and have been exploring using external mics . My take (for me) is that I would be better off getting the new A6400 (or possibly an a6500) rather than to adapt my A6000 to use external audio. In the meantime my old slt-A77 has a mic jack, I'll just use that for now. Thanks.

Try using the output from the H1 and input it into your A6000. That takes out the step of syncing audio from the H1. You can also use the headphone output from the H1 to monitor.
@fauxltystower7 жыл бұрын
Barry Chalcroft How do you input that audio directly into an a6000? It doesn't have audio jacks, and the multifunction hot shoe doesn't allow for direct interaction unless using the Sony "shotgun" mic, the Sony stereo mic, and their Bluetooth microphone set with transmitter you wear and the receiver on the hot shoe.
@barrychalcroft82797 жыл бұрын
Sorry. I'm using a A6300 forgot a A6000 didn't have one. I only had an A6000 for a couple weeks before I upgraded.
@fauxltystower7 жыл бұрын
Barry Chalcroft Yeah, it's why he opened with with the a6000 not having any mic or monitoring jacks, hence needing a workaround. I only use camera audio for syncing multiple cameras myself the mic preamps are usually weak anyway.
@videoallanpoeproductions49077 жыл бұрын
The a6300 and, now, the a6500 still have no headphone jack a la the full frame a7 series cameras and is kind of useless for location audio monitoring. Double system audio is the way to go and very easy to sync up if you clap your hands or use a clapper board at the beginning, or end, of the shot... Thanks, Vapp..........

Why not just get the Sony stereo hotshoe mic for the A6000 (Sony ECMXYST1M Stereo Microphone ). It will give you a mic input as well Also Sony makes Sony ECMW1M Wireless Microphone which you can connect directly to your cam Seems like this investment will be much worth your time carrying another device and audio sync issues

Adam Shaban Both good ideas, but unfortunately they are both poorly-reviewed on amazon. It seems that they both cause hissing noises and a loss of audio controls on the a6000.

Your mic input is set too loud - one should target -12 dB, not 0 dB. Also, optimal mic input setting for Zoom H1 is 37 - then it has the least amount of noise (it has something to do with internal signal chain), and also one should never go below 20, because 20 is the lowest real (analog) setting.
