These individual stories are wonderful. Sgt Newton felt that he had no hatred for the southern white people, but the war was necessary for the freedom of millions. A man of integrity and courage, who even resisted the temptation to get some payback in SC. Truly a noble warrior.

I can't get enough of the stories of these men, who are the greatest of all American patriots. They lived and died for liberty and justice.

Wonderful story. Living a long life to remember the struggle and the triumph.

This is the real "Glory" story. As mentioned by another listerner, our film industry should create a film similar to this story. Might be very relevant to today's social challenges.

If only we could get Hollywood to stop extruding their endless stream of cretinous action films and do a story like this! There are so many stories, great stories, that need to be told. That's why I come here, for the stories I would not otherwise hear.

Totally agree. Our film industry dumbs down the slavery and sometimes Civil War stories. This story would make a fantastic film, no doubt.

@youtubeprofilewordsname12345 Thing is, this is just the sort of film that attracts top-drawer actors and directors, and the sort of film that gets Oscars.

We have such a wealth of stories to be told on the small and big screens. So many opportunities to share our American narrative.

I live not far from Camden New Jersey. Ron, do you know where he was buried?
@williammckern1442Ай бұрын
Mount Peace Cemetery. It's in Lawnside, Camden County, New Jersey. I found it on Find A Grave, including photos of Newton and his grave marker. Born in 1837 died in 1921.

Is it slavery month at Life on the CW trail?
@owensomers85722 ай бұрын
You do realize that the Civil War was closely tied to slavery, and states rights to maintain that institution.

Seem like it!!😂😂

The show tracks my research each day. In recent months I have been working on two stories connected to enslaved people. One is about the U.S. Colored Troops in St. Louis in 1863-1864 and the other an Indiana officer who supported slavery, but his attitude changed after being captured and held at Libby Prison. If you are looking for more videos about slavery, or other Civil War topics, there are now more than 625 on this channel.

@@owensomers8572 Yes of course I do. I don't need a history lesson from you Owen. I like the military history part of the CW and I prefer videos/discussions where one doesn't always have to have his/her nose pushed into the slavery part of it. That kind of ruins the mood. They don't force us to see/hear about the oil, scrap metal and aviation fuel embargoes the US put on Japan every time a Pacific WWII video comes on. They don't even force a mention of Pear Harbor before every Pacific WWII video, but there are a significant number of folks who apparently feel a (guilt? PC pressure?) duty to bring up slavery before one can discuss the CW. My comment was because so many recent CW Trail videos were about slavery and Mr. Ron or someone at the magazine site clearly answered my question.

@youtubeprofilewordsname12345 Nice statement of the obvious. And why the need to call Mr. Ron "a good man."? A more than usual number of recent videos have been about slavery/ex-slaves and my comment was apparently spot on as evidenced by the replay from the magazine site.
