Congratulations on buying arguably the best on the market. That baby will never let you down. My first one did around 370 thousand miles, without a glitch... Drove it from Upper State New York to Bolivia, thinking of leaving it there. I Repented, drove it back to NYS where it now is on exhibition at my personal collection (nearing 200 cars/trucks, and about 12 bikes). Obviously bought a new one... This, along with the old HiLux Pickup, have to be the best vehicles I have ever owned (and, yes I own three Mercedes G Wagons and a Unimog). I'm in the Truck/Car industry and own a factory which builds, mainly, trucks that can get anywhere (and no, we are not accepting requests, already have a 2+ year waiting list). Cheers.

Not going to lie, I'm sort of worried about winter driving. lol Sure I have the clearance now, but snow tires on the Sti in a snow storm was heaven. Good pick up on the Subie man! Try to find a cheap Sti intercooler that’s your restriction on your set up. Also thing to know is the radiator on that model has plastic end tanks that are known to leak. I suggest getting a mishimoto all aluminum one so you won’t have to worry about getting stranded later down the road 🤙🏽

I've also helped out a group at a nearby camp site with a dead battery too and they tossed me a few beers.

I'm on my 3rd Forester XT in a row. First was an 04 XT, then an 08 Sports XT, both manual. Now I have a 13. All 3 were heavily modified. They're by far the most versatile vehicle I believe on the road. You can lower them to go fast and handle well on the racetrack since they share the WRX chassis, and you can also lift them to do some decent offloading. Such a great all around vehicle.

I have an Impreza with all season tires and it is an absolute beast. I can drive through brutal snow storms and pass people on the highway without a second thought. I recently bought one of these. My one is a 2006 "Facelift" European spec, RHD (I'm in UK) but the previous owner had made some modifications: Brembo slotted/drilled discs all round, larger STI intercooler/Y-pipe, Toyosports downpipe, bigger hood-scoop, Pedders lowering coil-overs. The bypass valve sounds like a regular blow-off valve ...proper loud TSSSHHHH! when you boot it then back off the gas pedal. Here in UK, these are relatively rare (646 nationwide as of 2018). I'm wondering if (with the modifications it has) a -re-map would be worthwhile.

Thanks for the review of your beater ;~} I've always kinda liked Subaru, but never considered them all that useful for off-road. Plus they remind me of a soccer mom's car. However, I do appreciate your approach to using it as a do-all commuter. And, Consumer Reports raves over Subaru and their reviews carry some weight with me. I am looking forward to see what you do to/with your 80s series Land Cruiser...been watching a lot of overland vids in Australia (4xOverland, 4WD Action, etc.) and the revamped older LCs has me thinking a bit out of the box for what I'd eventually like to get for my ultimate overland lifestyle (I currently have a 2018 4Runner Off Road Premium). I really wish Toyota would move some of their production in the US and build the 70 and 80 series with utes so we can kit them out with a Patriot Camper; that would be awesome. Thanks for posting and sharing your stuff with the rest of us who really want to get out of our man-caves.
@mountainstv96605 жыл бұрын
you should check out the old GL models they made in the 80s, they had traditional 4wd instead of awd and actually work out pretty great for offroad cars, people lift them all the time and theyll go anywhere a jeep or truck will
@TheCrusaderOfGames5 жыл бұрын
Honestly all of your vehicles are goals haha
@mountainstv96605 жыл бұрын
4wd is 100 percent better than awd in the snow unless you are in light compacted snow on a road, when driving in deep snow or off roading in the snow, 4wd is still much more capable and when you start to get high centered or stuck 4wd will enable you to get out where as awd will leave the tire with the least grip spinning. Ive owned a 1999 forester, a 1988 Subaru GL wagon (5 inch lift and 32 in all terrains), along with a 2015 4wd tacoma, and while I havnt driven the tacoma in the snow yet, the GL wagon was able to do 60mph on the highway in 4wd in a fresh foot of snow with no control or handling issues, where as my forester would be great in inconsistent snow/road conditions where there are patches of pavement or slush or packed snow, but would have worse handling in deep snow and uneven surfaces
@LastLineOfDefense5 жыл бұрын
Like I mentioned - AWD is superior to 4wd for snow on the road - which is the purpose of this vehicle. 4x4 and AWD both give power to the two wheels (one front and one rear) with least resistance - this is not up for debate, this is fact. If you have a locker, limited slip, or traction control - then a computer or mechanical locking of the axle differential will allow either both, or the wheel with traction to gain traction - this behavior is the same for both AWD and 4x4. What makes AWD better for onroad driving is that there isn't a center differential lock, meaning the front and rear wheels can turn at different rates - you don't typically want this offroad, but you do want this onroad. Allowing your front and rear wheels to turn at different rates means that it won't force a slip of either the front or rear wheel - anyone who has drifted a car (or burned out) knows that once a wheel has broken loose from traction - it is far more prone to 'stay broken loose'. What this means in practice is that when turning on a snowy road with 4x4, you are more prone to break a wheel loose, and thus lose control of the vehicle.

Only problem with the Blizzaks is they are directional. You can't rotate directional tires correctly. I accidentally bought them for the wife instead of the General's asymmetrical snow tire. General's would've been a tiny bit louder though, a few bucks cheaper, and rotation-compliant.

Throw a locker in the rear end, lower your chances of getting stuck & having to abandon the car/walk. Torq masters makes one. Recently released $400 Anderson Design & Fabrication makes quality lift kits for Subaru platforms as well, I've got mine up on 31" all terrains w/ his "lower lift kit" & some fender "massaging" .. a simple strut top spacer can eliminate the rubbing issue & give you a tad more clearance for those extra snowy days.
