In this installment, I'll show you trade secrets that I devised many years ago for PS1 hardware. The technique's demonstrated here are applicable for models ranging from the SCPH-5XXX all the way up to the SCPH-101. This is NOT a tutorial, but just a brief overview of how I operate when working with this hardware.

Voultar I need some help with this. Back in 2002 a buddy of mine who spent way too much time in Korea with the army brought an original PS1 home. It had a mod that plugged into the serial port on back and just stayed there it was about the size of a pack of cigarettes his PS1 played DVDs... what was that?

It could be the fact that the Mayumi chip uses the PS1's own internal clock signal to drive the timing so it's more accurate as long as it's not getting any interference when the likelihood of that happening with the way he installs those chips is very minimal. The Multi-Mode chips use the PIC's own internal clock which is accurate enough to work most of the time but can fail on rare occasions forcing a system restart to get it working again as I have had to deal with for my MM3 modded PS1s that I installed. I use MM3 in my gray systems mostly so I have the ability to disable the anti-mod protection and the chip itself to test certain things. My chip installs aren't as clean though as I like to put the chip in a socket that is easy for me to access so I can swap out the chip if I need to like I recently did to see if a chip I had flashed was working before I installed it in another console. I rarely install chips for others but I am doing this most recent chip install for some kids next door which is still going to be a surprise for them but I'm still waiting for a new memory card to arrive so they can actually save their games once they get it. By the way Voultar I only recently found your channel and I'm liking what I'm seeing so far and will consider some of your methods the next time I do a mod chip install. I destroyed 3 PSOnes trying to install a chip using those "other" diagrams you mentioned mostly due to my lack of soldering skills but I did finally manage to get a working install with two of the wires being soldered directly to the drive controller chip so that gave me a nice confidence boost especially when I'm only working with a cheap 30W iron I got from a local hardware store and who's tip really doesn't last very long before I just can't get it to hold solder or heat long enough to do what I need to do with it but being cheap it's easy to replace when that happens.

I am going to be doing a PSone MM3 mod here in a few days. I was looking at the diagram for the SCPH-50xx series and I remembered this video. The diagram looked horrendous, I'm glad I found this video again. This will be my first actual soldering job with a real soldering iron. And this is also going to be on my childhood PSone. I know I'll get it right thanks to you!

What you say about practicing with fine pitch soldering is absolutely correct, but many people will be afraid that they'll mess something up when doing so and ruin a working unit. What I recommend, is to find some free or cheap broken electronics to practice on, so if you mess up, nothing is lost. Old car stereos are great for this, they have lots of SMD chips to practice on. You can also sometimes find bulk lots of old PCI cards on eBay, which also have SMD components, and if the lots include LAN cards, the option ROM sockets offer the chance to practice desoldering DIP chips.

Wonderfull , a piece of art your skill are, i remember doing My first and last onechip on a PSone , i burned like 4 chips (the one time burn type) and only one worked , all because My laptop wasnt suppling enough power to the serial Port so the chip didnt burn correctly, the last chip i burn it on a PC and it worked. I struggle , i was a newbie, but had little solderin skill and in the end it was all worth it. I still remember the first time i booted a copy of crash bandicoot and i almost cry XD. THANKS , like your vídeo and brought so many nostalgic memories. I Wish a was a kid again. Note : i also owned the original crash bandicoot Game.

when you have all that excess wire coming through the vias did you trim to length and then solder or did you solder as is, using the solder to burn away the cladding and then trim?
@Voultar

That's the wonderful thing about Kynar insulation. It's heat resistant, so when you apply heat to the jacketing, it's only going to remove material that comes into contact with your tip. What I like to do is just make a circular motion around the 1mm+/- material that potrudes from the via until the jacketing is stripped. I then solder and trim it up a bit. I couldn't figure out a good way to show that on camera because my damned hands were always in the way of the shot.

Can you answer a few questions for someone who’s been soldering for a long time but simply sucks at it and can’t seem to problem solve it well? I have flux, different sized tips, temp adjustable iron(a cheap one). If I’m having problems getting my pins to stick to the chips pins like yours do what’s my problem? Flux is down. Wires are tinned. Is my iron too hot? Am I not heating the chips pin enough? Am I moving too much? Is my tip too big or too small? I attempted installing an mm3 on a psx and immediately lifted a pad. So now I have to go to the chips pin and I want to do what I can to right my previous wrong.

@Voultar
@Voultar 6 жыл бұрын
A lot of people will tell you to buy the smallest tip you can (for when doing this sort of work). I don't believe in that. The smaller the tip, the less thermal mass you have to deliver energy into the point of contact. Look at the tip that I use, for example. I use a large D type (flat blade) tip. If you're beginning to learn how to solder, the standard "conical" tip is more than sufficient for general purpose use. Everyone has different anatomy. Find what you're most comfortable with using and that you can articulate/maneuver well.
@steveholvoet6058
@steveholvoet6058 6 жыл бұрын
It's not about the tip, it's what you do with it. 😅 conical tips should seldom be used. Chisel and bevel tips, good flux and some practice is all you need. If you really want to get into micro soldering a bent conical tip might come in handy on occasion.

Mayumi v4 "Voultar" installation diagram for SCPH-900X i.imgur.com/oZIgeR2.jpg This hasn't been 100% tested yet so use at your own risk (In my probing sometimes pin8 would probe the same as pin1 O.o?) Sadly 900X and 700X are all the ps1's have on hand right now and im to lazy to remove the RF shield to do a diagram for 700X. Maybe later if people really want it. Also if you super want to show off you don't have to use the solder pad for pin5. You can follow the trace back to the cd rom controller package and solder your wire to the back or side of the pin after you thread the wire underneath all the other pins

Huh, would have liked to have seen the stripping and soldering of the wires to the adapter, that seemed like the trickiest part. My difficulty with fine pitch soldering seems to come more from eyesight than stability. I bought a magnifying headset, but the damned thing doesn't fit well over my glasses.

Did you try removing your helmet 1st? It seems like that might negatively affect your head stability :P

Lol, you had to pick the most noisy thing you found. What wrong with some quiet soldering.
