To help those who have Supraventrictular Tachycardia (SVT) and are considering a catheter ablation or know someone who is, I wanted to make a video documenting my experience. A couple of quick numbers regarding SVT and catheter ablations:
• SVT affects roughly 2.3 out of 1000 people
• A catheter ablation has a 90% chance of getting rid of SVT, sometimes a 2nd procedure is required to completely eliminate the SVT
Prior to my operation, I found it very therapeutic to speak or watch video testimonials of those who have had catheter ablations. These insights helped build the confidence I needed prior to my procedure and enabled me to not have any nervous anxiety during the operation. At the point I decided I wanted to operation, I was so fed up with my SVT that I was actually ready and looking forward to the surgery. As we prepare to move onwards to 2017, I'm looking forward to working out and living life without the fear of SVT. I hope this helps you or someone you know who is considering receiving a catheter ablation.

I'm at the hospital right now, having the procedure tomorrow, I hope this will improve my life, I had given up any physical activities cause I was just scared this would trigger my heart, I also always stayed not too far from home. I'm a bit nervous about the procedure but happy this can change my life. Update; My life changed for the best ! I am now not living in fear of having a sudden AF.

Thanks Jeffrey, I'm 59 and had my ablation last Friday the 17th. Right and left groin. It went great and I'm so relieved! No more ER trips. My SVT's would stay at over 200 beats per minute and I was on medication I would have to get the shot that stops your heart to get it down. Sometimes the ice cold water would help, but not when it crested 200. I was so happy to get the surgery and today just 5 days after my surgery I'm writing this from my desk at work! Amazing.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1994. Just one year later, after gym class I found myself struggling to breathe. I was so scared and thought I was going to die! I was rushed to the hospital and my heart rate was at 245 beats per minute. I literally was given a shot to stop and restart my heart. Six months after being diagnosed with SVT I had cardiac ablation surgery at Deborah Heart and Lung Center. They saved my life! I'm now 39 years old, happily married and have two amazing teenage daughters❤️

Wow I just had mine at deborah as well. Currently recovering. Seems like the irritation is causing some symptoms but it's only been like 2 weeks since my ablation. Nurses told me to monitor the symptoms and that it could take 3 months to fully heal and see results. I look forward to that!

When my nurse woke me up while in recovery and said look at the monitor and I seen my heart rate was normal and no SVT’s it was like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I have my life back. First off, thanks for sharing your story. I have SVT and afib. They did ablasions and inserted a difiberllater. I love to workout also. But it seems that the strenuous activity causes me to get svt and shocked repeatedly. It's very painful. I'm actually in ICU right now writing this comment. My heart stopped and I got shocked about 30 times. Then 20 times from paramedics. They performed cpr for 35 minutes and saved my life. It seems I'm in a constant state of paranoia. I want to keep working out when I get discharged from hospital. I guess I just wanna say I admire your confidence and hope your ablasions continue to save u from svt

Hi, so an update. I had my procedure done on June 3rd, 2021 and it’s now December 2021….immediately after my procedure I had an SVT attack because they found two separate sources that was contributing to my SVT.. they only ablated one and they pumped a lot of adrenaline to try and ablate the second one but it was too difficult for them to really pinpoint and get it..so needless to say, I was freaking out because I thought that the procedure was going to be instant and I was never going to have an attack again and also I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia and had a panic attack and cried for about an hour for idk what reason.…the first couple of days after that were a little rough. I tried to take a shower on the second day and almost passed out from standing…or maybe it was from looking at my incision on my leg lol. It took about a week before I was able to move around efficiently. And by the second week, i was mostly fine. I still couldn’t do most physical activity and had a couple of very very short episodes(like less than 5 seconds) and also I would get winded very easily… It is now December and I am living life normally. I have had a couple of flutters here and there but they’ve been very short(like one or two beats) and I’m starting to do more physical activity….I get lightheaded when I try and lift heavy things or strain myself and I don’t know why….overall though I would definitely do this procedure again and probably will for the second source of my SVT if it develops more. Also my life is 90% better afterwards. I don’t have to constantly worry about having a drink, or not getting enough sleep or any of my other triggers and worry about having an attack anymore.

Awesome video! I thought you did an excellent job of thorougly explaining this condition and also of what to expect in the ablation procedure for SVT. I have lived with SVT for the last three years and finally had the ablation yesterday. I had tried the vagal maneuvers to no avail and then was prescribed a medication (Propanolol) to take when I had an episode. The medication would take quite a while to to take effect and would leave you tired with cold hands and feet and drop blood pressure below normal. I finally went to a cardiac electrophysiologist and after wearing the holter monitor for three weeks and getting a good reading on three episodes, they diagnosed me with SVT. I would have episodes lasting anywhere between three to four hours and a couple times it was an all day thing. I had an echocardiogram last Friday and had the ablation procedure yesterday morning. So far so good. I would recommend anyone with this problem to search for a good doctor and have this procedure done. I think it's a life changer for me....for the good :)

No shame in hitting your breaking point! Not as if by having it fixed your gonna be revealing the US Nuclear Codes. No medals for repeatedly putting yourself through hours of 240bpm and feeling like your heart is about to jump out of your chest until they stick a needle in your arm and kill you for a nanosecond ‘til your heart can reboot itself. Especially when there’s no need to. The things they can do now are beyond miraculous. The shame would be not to take advantage of them. I mean it’s not particularly fatal to slam your knee into the corner of a cast iron coffee table either but that doesn’t mean you’re a pussy if you move the damn thing 6 inches to the left. Hope you’re good and recovering well! (I had my ablation three days ago and I’m already going out of my mind cause I can’t go run six miles. We’re all nuts :)

Thanks for posting about your experience! I'm so nervous! I have my ablation scheduled for July 17, 2017. I already have anxiety and I think the svt caused it because I'm always waiting for another episode to happen. This has taken over my life and I'm ready to get it back. I'm still scared as heck to do this but the positive stories from yourself and others is definitely reassuring. 😊

Diorme, That is great you have begun mostly free of it! I can’t imagine dealing for 48 years with it. I have had it for 25 years but it used to be a few times per year. Now it is usually at least weekly, sometimes 2 or 3 times per week. I usually get myself out of it within 5 minutes. My rate is close to 300 beats per minute though so I get short of breath very quickly and dizzy. I am scheduled in 8 weeks for an ablation. Just tired of having it occur when driving or waking at 4 am with SVT!

I had this done 4x and this last time was super easy. The first 3 times was in the late 90’s. They do not want you to shave with a razor at the site. This increases the chance of razor burn and subdermal infections. The doctors don’t even shave at the site. If you’re going to have this done, do not be afraid. all it is is a big IV in your leg. And the technology they have today is absolutely mind blowing. Any of the complications that they warn you about are all from the 90s.

I had this done 8 days ago.... I am 35 and have dealt with this since the age of 11 and was misdiagnosed 3 times with a mitral valve prolapse.... over time it progressively got worse....i winded up in the ER which I have been there a few times before and they would run an ekg and it would be fine for the moment and they would send me home saying it looked fine...i hit my breaking point when I passed out and slammed my head on a table knocking myself unconconcious...ive passed out several times over my lifetime always starting with a rapid heart rate...so I went to the ER again and crossed paths with an excellent cardiologist who decided to do the EP study and did the ablation...turned out to be severe....i am glad that I did... the rapid heart beat got to be a regular occurrence, coming on like 3 times a week. it was literally taking over my life. haven't had a rapid heart beat since then other than once but I was exercising during that time. 25 years or so of this torture was worth a try to fix it. hopefully my heart took the ablation and I will have no more problems.....no more meds

I remember having SVT as a kid but never understood what it was and just dismissed it. The episodes for years made me dizzy and I had to sit down immediately and wait for the heart beat to return to normal. Usually, it would within 5 minutes so it never was too big of an inconvenience. However, as I have gotten older, the episodes last longer and are scarier. I was at the ER once after the SVT lasted 3 hours. The doctors were startled at the heart rate which they were able to control with an injection. I am fearful that although I am told this is not a life threatening condition that I could have an episode and fall or have an accident while driving, etc. Therefore, after all these years, I have decided to get an ablation. I am hoping for good results. Thanks for all your posts and making me realize I am not alone. So many people have no idea what this condition is.

Two years ago I was actually misdiagnosed and didn't bother to have a second opinion and just dismissed my short episodes during workouts. Last August was my breaking point when I had an episode at work that lasted almost 1 hour and I was rushed to the hospital. The nurses were weirded out because it suddenly subsided when they are getting my ECG. All the doctors that I consulted with suggested that I should have this done. Your video managed to help me get important insights on the experience. I am more confident now about the procedure. Thank you.

Edward Belen, the nurses were probably weirded out because your heart probably stopped for a little bit in order to reset itself. I am a nurse with svt for over two decades. When it happens at work I have let nurses or techs listen to it with a stethoscope (most people never hear it in school) and then I tell them to keep listening while I lay down to convert myself! I have been told there is a pause when it converts. So maybe on ecg it appears as brief asystole (aka flat line)

I have had SVT since I was really little. Started noticing that something was wrong when I was around 4 years old and started playing soccer. We could never get to the hospital in time to catch it on a monitor though so it was overlooked until I was 11 years old and was given a heart monitor to wear for a month. I was put on medication and my svt episodes became very infrequent. I ended up being weaned off the medicine around the age of 15 and would only have about 2 episodes per year. My episodes would last about 30-45 minutes with the longest being about an hour. My heart rate would always be around 215 bpm and I could usually vaguel out of it eventually. My breaking point just came in October. I had my second child on October 8th via csection and on October 13th started feeling short of breath. I went to the hospital and was admitted for pneumonia. They released me the next day around 5pm since I had finished a few rounds of antibiotics and I was able to keep my oxygen levels in the normal range without the need for oxygen. I arrived home at 5:45pm and went into svt. I tried everything to get myself out of it. I didnt want to go back to the hospital with having a newborn at home but after 6 hours of svt and starting to feel very short of breath, I told my husband I would call an ambulance and told him to stay home with the kids. I was given adenosine and taken to the hospital. I started going into svt over and over again. Throughout the night I was given adenosine 5 times, metoprolol 2 times, and cardizem 4 times. After a few rounds of the svt, my oxygen levels dropped and even on 5 liters of oxygen I was still at only 80%. I ended up on bipap throughout the night. I was transferred to the cardiac floor at 5am but they believed I was too unstable so they moved me to the ICU around 7am where I was placed on a cardizem drip. I was also given lasix to help get some fluids off my lungs. The act literally would start back up within 20 minutes of them getting me out of it. They finally got it to stop at 10:30am on October 15th. I was able to come off the bipap around 8am on October 15th and was placed on 2 liters oxygen via nasal cannula for about a day and then was not on any oxygen. They weaned me off the cardizem drip and gave me oral cardizem and metoprolol. I was finally discharged from the ICU on October 17th. Since then I have had one episode of svt about 2 weeks ago that lasted around 30 minutes. They wanted to give me time to heal from my csection before doing the ablation and now that I am 7 weeks post partum they are suppose to call me today to schedule it. I am nervous but also looking forward to it. I never want to go through what I went through ever again!

Thanks for this post. My ablation is in 5 days and I am terrified. This video helped a lot. I hope I can come off the meds and that I don’t panic during the EP study.

I’ve had SVT for as long as I can remember, I’m 19 now and looking into getting a catheter ablation. Some of my episodes have lasted as long as 8 hours so I’m very ready to fix this problem!

I have SVT and my heart was goin 200bpm, at first they only lasted for few minutes and far inbetween after 3 yrs episodes got worse and I have to take metropolol to stop the palpitation. I was also taken to ER aswell to do a cardioversion after ingesting multivitamins containing iodine as I have hypothyroidism aswell. The breaking point that made me decided to get the ablation is because its starting to affect my work. I work in the mines here in Australia and we do a fly in fly out arrangement where we stay for 8 days in the mines. I am getting worried about losing my job as the company can see me as a liability and a lot of risk as I work in a remote area where there is no hospital nearby and have to be airlifted to the nearest hospital about 2 hours away which almost happen on my first of 3 episodes at work. So today im in the hospital recovering after the ablation so far so good. I cant wait to live a normal life again without having to worry about my SVT. If your are thinking of getting it it has 80% succsess rate for any reason it did not work the first time a second procedure has 90% succsess rate. Hope this help someone.

Ahhh this video was super helpful! Going to get ablation done in a month or so and I’ve been super nervous about it, cause like you said it involves the heart. I’m only 20 years old and I remember having it since I was 8 or so. Going to get this done in LA area. Thanks for your experience

I had a Cath ablation 10 years ago and had another just last week. First ablation the cardio doc went in on both left and right groin but on this 2nd one 10 years later, he only went in on right groin. I didn't think I needed a second ablation but my SVT symptoms came back early this year. Thanks for sharing your story!
