My Tap Drinking Water is Black - Reason Why ??

The Black water coming from Taps or faucets is a common problem. Many people are unaware of the real reason why the water is colored, especially black-colored water.

my apartment building, the water comes out grey/black and then dissipates some, but still has a greyish tint to it, and can leave a grey film that can feel almost chalky when dry, several of us have been complaining to our land lord for a few years now but nothing being done, how do i know if this is harmful or not. or know if it is manganese or something else the building is old and has old galvanized piping as well, and has well water (not city water)

You can simply send it for water testing which is relatively cheap. You should be sure that you are drinking clean water. As for the reason, there might be calcium carbonate in your water as it is from well. Some of it remains dissolved and makes white scales in pipes. If this is so, take a beaker full of water, boil it vigorously for 5-10 minutes. Leave it to cool and see what is the insoluble fraction. If it is present, then calcium carbonate might be the reason for it. In any case, you can send a water sample for quality testing.

Does it has any impact after the black water disappeared?

If it is precipitated by Manganese, in the practical aspect, it might have only a little impact. However, if it is due to organics or other reasons, it should not be used directly without filtration and disinfection. However, in any situation, filtration should be preferred.
