My terrible experience with the GouheTec TBR-119 all band all mode radio

All I wanted was a rugged 'shack in a box' and instead I got this...
Mr. BrianC and I have been testing our TBR-119 radios in the field for about a year and I have come to the conclusion that it is an irredeemable pile of garbage. This radio is plagued with hardware and software bugs. Most advertised features of the radio either don't work or are extremely buggy. STAY CLEAR!
We did our best to work with the GouheTec (Hamgeek) and it has been nothing but trouble from the start. Even after receiving a defective radio out of the box Gouhe basically said "too bad, fix it yourself". I do not recommend this radio or any other offerings from GouheTec.
I initially wanted to make a more polished video review of the TBR but this radio has already wasted enough of my time.

Someone's got to take the plunge and try these things I guess. Hats off to you guys. $2k is steep, Could build a nice manpack with a HAM radio for that. Obviously wouldn't look as tactical but would work much much better. Shame no ones makes a Alu case with a strong harris HF Whip connector and BNC for VHF/UHF that holds a ham radio.

Everything he says is true. I own a Q900 ver 3 and it is nothing now except an electronic brick. I was part of the group he was talking about, and all the discussions about what was happening just kept getting worse and worse as time went by. You can’t get anything more than delay tactics in response to inquiries about getting your radios repaired. Save yourself money and frustration by not buying these products. What they advertise is not what you get. There product is not close to being ready to sell, and probably will never be.

Was able to get a used codan 2110 with all ancillaries for $1000 more than one of these.

FYI this model actually doesn’t go to Chinese HAM market and for a lot of periods Guohetec’s focus is on the Q900-branch products (such as Q900 and the PMR-171)therefore a lot of performance issues.

Just curious, when you had the TX audio problem, was it before or after you changed it to a non factory mic? Because a mic impedance mismatch or drive mismatch will have TX audio problems obviously. I don't own this radio, but I appreciate you sharing your story about this.

Excellent question! Yeah, I verified that the new handset functioned close to the stock handset. In some modes you can force the radio to do what it's supposed to do, like NFM on any frequency below 17mhz works correctly and thats what I tested the handset functionality on. Also Mr. BrianC's TBR has the same issues and its 100% stock.

I blame the top three Ham radio manufacturers for leaving their front doors wide open for anyone to steal the front spot in the Amateur radio world. POTA and SOTA has been around for more than a decade and yet none of them has built a “shack in a box” transceiver smaller than a kitchen sink. The ICOM IC-705 was the closest they ever came and then the failure of the IC-905, which should have been the 100w version of the IC-705. Huge disappointment there! Yaesu came out with the 991 and then the 991A but again, the size transceiver you’d ever travel with to do POTA/SOTA’s, again, nothing smaller than a kitchen sink. I own two Xiegu G90’s because they are compact enough for POTA/SOTA’s and they perform EXTREMELY well for the money! Still not a “shack in a box” type transceiver, missing 2m,70cm and missing 6m but has a tuner that can Tuna Fish! I bought a new PMR 171 a month ago and looking forward to take it out in the field, which bought before watching Brian’s two videos. Talking about very poor support from GUOHETEC, took me more than a month to receive a spare battery for the PMR 171 and all I heard was excuses. They are so good at hacking software from other countries but then can’t build a good product! Makes no sense at all. 😢

I don't even understand why they even bother trying to make a radio if it sucks this bad, like whats the point? I'd be embarrassed as heck to be involved with making a piece of trash like this.

Thanks for the riview. Ive been curious about these style radios. If you come across one that is worth it i would love to know. I was eyeing the pmr 171 i think was the model. Idk im skeptical. Would live to find a military style manpack. Ill probably build my own with armloc and a battery, but it won't be as cool as an actual Manpack style radio. Again thanks for the info. This radio has been a complete dogs breakfast, from the release of the V1 through to the V4 and all its variants. You are quite right about the firmware, which was ripped from the opensource USDR project and used in the McHF QRP SDR transceiver. In fact if you do a text search of the firmware file you will see a few references to M0NKA who was the designer of the McHF OpenSource transceiver. I have the V1 of this radio, known as the Ailunce HS2, and I’ve had to go through the factory menus and make many changes just to get it remotely usable. However I wouldn’t use it on HF without a quality external Low Pass Filter as the output is awash with unwanted spurii. This is even worse on VHF/UHF where the level of the spurii is greater than that of the fundamental.

I get the impression based on your comments you served. So let me ask you this: Why are you spending money with, providing product feedback to, and assisting with bug fixes with a adversary countries company that appears to be developing military communications equipment?
