The Behringer has two oscillators per voice, 8 voices, 8 independent outs which seems to indicate it can be 8-part Multi-timbral - I looked at the Behringer manual and it has a lot of keyboard modes and it also goes beyond the original PPG with wave smoothing and anti-aliasing, user wave tables and transients but no samples - it seems a really good value for the money.. The 3rd wave is 3 oscillators per voice, 24 voices and 4-part multi-timbral which is a lot more.
@MilesAwayOfficial9 сағат бұрын
That's quite cool that it has 8 outs. I took a quick look in the manual as well and didn't see anything about a bitimbral mode, but that's nice that even if they don't have it (they might) you could do some really interesting panning with the different outs. Do any of their other synths have 8 outs?
@DankePlace9 сағат бұрын
@@MilesAwayOfficial it does indeed have 8 outs, it doesn't mention if they're configurable, only that they're 6.35 mm TS unbalanced and yes it is multimbral, all 8 voices.

@@MilesAwayOfficial no, I think this is their first synth with 8 separate outs. I found the video strange, comparing a synth you have sat in front of you connected to all your studio kit, to a synth you only have a KZbin video of just isn't the way to do it. KZbins audio compression alone means you aren't hearing the true sound but, I suppose Miles was just trying to keep his finger on the pulse of a hot topic. I had no intention of getting B's Wave. I've known about it for years. Recently I decided I needed to get a 3rd Wave, and soon after B drops the Wave, then I heard it of course, and now I'm rethinking everything. See, for my use case it's the limitations of the PPG 2.x I'm after, while getting as close as possible to those sounds from the 80s. So yeah, I was about to drop all that cash to ignore a good chunk of the the 3rd Wave's capabilities. (they just have no place in what I do) I gotta say, B's offering is really tempting for my use case, but I am concerned about quality, and I just have to hear more out of it, which is why I'm going to wait until I see some proper reviews before I decide. If it passes the test, a desktop version would be ideal. I know the keys are going to be meh, plus it would take up less space, I got enough keys. Now the wait. Edit: Just checked out tom noise's short vid on the Wave. Digging the "Original Firmware" sound. Aliases like crazy. Crunchy AF. I need more of that.

I can understand the stress of youtubers/influencers to come up with videos fast, frequently and on hot topics, but comparing a synth you already own and played and know well to one that has not been out in the market yet and you have never touched or listened through your own studio monitors is, well, let's just say it is stretching things too far ..... Get a Behringer Wave first, play it, listen to it and then make as many detailed discussions about it as you want ... i can wait.

I'll be getting a Behringer Wave FOR SURE, as I already have a few other analog- and FM-type synths (plus external FX) to fill in any gaps :) Of course the 3rd Wave is a great choice if you use it as the "centerpiece" of your setup where it dominates the mix, it's just that gritty morphing "PPG sound" is really the only thing making it sonically unique to my ears.

I really like that "Death Factory" patch you made on the 3rd Wave. It just screams 70's Sci-fi computers!!! These are the type of sounds I want to learn how to create. It kinda sounds like you used some ring modulation or FM to create that patch. With all of that said, while the Behringer Wave sounds nice, it only makes me want a 3rd Wave more. I've played around with the 3rd Wave a few times, and it truly is a beast. The sky is the limit as far as what type of sounds you can create with it. I hope to own one someday soon. The 3rd Wave, OB-X8, and Minimoog are the top three ultimate synths I hope to own at some point in addition to what I already own. I'm going to be honest and say the 3rd Wave is the most versatile of the three, and if I could only afford one, I would definitely choose the 3rd Wave. That analog Prophet-style patch you played and that "Death Factory" patch is evidence enough to prove how versatile and flexible the 3rd Wave really is. I mean, WOW!!!! It can also sound so big and wide that it's unbelievable!! So yes, I clearly understand why the 3rd Wave is your favorite synth, eventhough you also own an Oberheim OB-X8. Speaking if which, I'm glad there is a desktop module version of the OB-X8. I think it's more practical to me than the keyboard version, considering the small amount of controls on the keyboard versus it's size, and also the fact the OB-X8 desktop module is much smaller and didn't compromise on the features or the interface. The 3rd Wave keyboard, on the other hand, has a much better interface than its desktop module counterpart.

So far I'm pretty impressed by the crisp behringer wave sound when "Enhanced Mode" is off what makes the true original sound. That were also the main argument. A comparison by Starscy Carr with a 3rd wave desktop with an old wavev 2 (comma something) didn't show a 100% unity to my ears. The old wave sounded a little brighter. Since I already have a (still) highly sophisticated microwave XT with 30 voice expansion, that is sonically largely indistinguishable from the hybrid Waldorf M (again Starscy Carr's comparison), the behringer wave would definitely be an option for me. According to the specs, user wavetables are possible. I assume the behringer app would manage the conversion & I'd be happy if you make a comparison video. Maybe you'll like the sound that much to even keep it.

When Wolfgang Palm built the original PPGs the resolution was greatly limited by availably technology. The 3rd Wave has 12x the resolution quality, 4 part multitimbrality, more modulation routings, multiple filters, etc. The difference between the two is essentially do you want your wavetable synth to be purely early ‘80s, or do you want the synth Wolfgang would build if he was in his creative prime in the 2020s.

The only cool thing about the behringer ppg is it's cheaper and looks like a mini ppg. There's also the GS Bree6 for the 3rd wave filter sound, all 3 Synths are blue. The 3rd wave probably replicates the ppg better too though. The Behringers replica 2044 is better than the ssi2144 (UDO super gemini) for keeping the original sound like the ssi2140 does for the prophet 5/10, except just like the behringer ub-xa filters it lacks the high end frequencies like all vsts. I can list so many more advantages. Im really waiting till the GS flagship version of the e7, hopefully also comes in a desktop format although it probably will come with keys. I've owned a PPG 2.2 for many years and this instrument remains unique, unrivalled and truly has a soul. I've never had any interest in the 3rd wave, which in my opinion is to clean and has no personality. I think until you have used both the Behringer Wave and an original PPG 2.3, much of what you are talking about here is conjecture and so not really very helpful. The PPG and the Behringer both have the same "basis" control for the voices. In the stereo position, this simply sends alternate voices left and right, with progressively sweeping the control left you eventually get an equal level left and right. The synth is not binaural, or even stereo realty. Voices are available on individual outputs also. The Behringer Wave gives the option of the original stepped wavetable scanning, or an "enhanced" smoothed version too. The 3rd Wave sounds PPG-esque, but doesn't sound like an actual PPG. The originals are pretty quirky beasts and it does seem like Behringer have copied many of those withe theirs. It would be interesting to know if they have used the same transposition method in the wave scanning. If they had used modern DSPs, it would have been cheap to have increased the polyphony, heck, they even doubled the hardware voices in the UBXa. That they haven't in the Wave interests me. I'm hoping for a racked version ala EVU sometime. Maybe I will even replace my 2.3 and Waveterm B if it can load samples like the original...

The 3rd Wave sounds rich and lush ... The Behringer Wave sounds 2D and thin, like a cheap synth, which I suppose it is! ... so from the demos I was really disappointed, and I do have Behringer gear so I'm not grinding an axe here, it just doesn't do it for me. The 3rd Wave however, does.

Fair! I actually think that this Behringer clone sounds significantly better than some of their other clones, at least from KZbin. Impressed for $600.

Lol, OK … I don’t have any Behringer gear, but I think their Mono/Poly sounds great … this Wave may be, too, from all accounts. Behringer has been very hit & miss, imho … but it seems they really nailed the OG PPG sound with this one … We shall see (hear) …

@@kierenmoore3236 Yeah I may feel differently hearing it in the flesh ... just felt like it lacked a depth of quality compared to the 3rd Wave to me.

@@MilesAwayOfficial I think where it notices for me is when you hear the 3rd Wave and then the Behringer. As for their other clones, I do have a PolyD and I'd thoroughily recommend those.

@@user-cv8ud8qo9f. Fair. I’m liking the character/grit of the Original Mode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h56xd5ueZciKrZosi=BKBfPFzOoZJFYgRs The more polished mode is boring to me. Wasn’t interested in either, but I do like this grit (which I’m sure the 3rd wave does a version of, too) … As for the ‘fit & finish’ quality, we’ll have to wait until more have been out in the wild for a spell. Cheers

I can’t believe the 3rd Wave is your ‘favourite’ synth (though, at the end you say, ‘one of’ your all-time favourites, lol 🤷🏻♂️). The PPG, the Behringer Wave, and even the 3rd Wave are all just Hybrids, right? The 3rd Wave has more ‘true-polyphonic’ voices; so more filter$ … and it can load/play samples. ‘VA’ etc is digital, so, blah, blah, blah … all but 1 or 2 of those 3rd Wave patches sounded pretty cold to me … And ALL synths (all musical sounds, pretty much) benefit greatly from reverb, obviously. Neither the PPG nor the 3rd Wave ever really piqued my interest - maybe because I’m not a huge wavetable user, for one thing - but I’m curious to hear a direct comparison of the 3rd Wave alongside the Summit now (just has fewer voices and no sample playback?!). Now THAT would be an interesting video … 3rd Wave Wavetables, Filters & Reverb … versus the Summit’s Wavetables, Filters & Reverb. The soon-to-be 3rd Wave and Behringer Wave sound comparisons are going to be very interesting, too. Not many people hate the blue with white, clacky buttons … ☺️ … “Human, all-too human …” 🤫

I have several videos on the Summit, I loved it and used it for 2 years. I sold it to fund the 3W which to me has a nicer more open/3D core tone. It’s personal preference based on the music I make. Also, I can sometimes be flippant with my words, so I’ll confirm that the 3rd Wave is my favourite do it all synth, the Ob-6 is my favourite inspiration/always faithful synth. I genuinely am stoked the Behringer Wave sounds like it can do this sound, cause PPG is such a great flavour

The 3rd Wave looks and sounds cool. But for me Microwave XT is good enough for this type of sounds. I know it's fully digital, but that is what I actually like - it is brutally digital :D .

I've heard great things! It's on my list to try if a good deal comes up locally some day.

Excellent video! Very fair and informative. I’ll save up for the 3rd Wave (probably 4th Wave by then haha)

sounds like you're upset given you hate Behringer so much, that someone posts *their* opinion and somehow you think yours should matter?

click bait because he gave his thoughts on the Wave? wow ok, move on then, nothing to see here.

The behringer sounded a bit lifeless. The third wave has a lot of depth.

3W is the absolute top of the top. It's the only digital osc synth I've heard that sounds as 3D as a Prophet/OB.
@DankePlace11 сағат бұрын
3W is unique, it has 4 pairs of stereo out making it a 4 x 6 voice synth with its own sequencers. Then add the amount of motion sequencing you can do, you can literally turn any knob and that's motion sequencing right there. I only post this as I have 1 and when I 1st got it, I never *got it* , took time to understand and that's when I got a *synthboner* lol I went from a Super 6 to the 3W and could not be happier.

@@dodgingrain3695 the sequencer is far the best I have ever used on any synth so that is an added bonus, comes close to my Hapax, just doesn't record MPE atm. I have asked, waiting for a reply. It also has 1 sequencer per part, 4 parts = 4 sequencers and all the motion sequencing you could possibly imagine.
