@@Bushradical I recently picked up their Hudson Bay Camp Knife. It was on my radar for a while, but it wasn't until I watched a few of your videos that I decided to pull the trigger on it. I'm a new subscriber to your channel. You have a really no bullshit approach to your content, which is super refreshing in todays world of "bushcraft/ survival". Thanks for the videos and for taking the time to respond to my comment.

I love the large knife you have and I have many knives myself and one of my favorites is the Buck knife with the long blade which is over 35 years old and I used it when I lived in San Bernardino, California. When I came to Arkansas where I have been living for decades. I own other large blade knives also, including one from a German company, but made in China, and one Japanese knife. When it comes to folding knives, I have several of them also with one which was issued to me while at one air base where we rigged parachutes for cargo which was dropped from the C-130 aircraft. That knife is now my favorite and is used for camping now and has two blades on it. One regular blade, and one blade with a slotted edge which fitted into the locking mechanism of the chute. The knife still looks new like it was when given to me.

Watching your "three no five" video made me think of Monty Python and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch: "Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out." Still a great video, I just have a strange mind. Thanks!

There are two knives, off the top of my head, that I believe are misunderstood and under appreciated. The first is the Ulu. I first witnessed the Ulu while working with Alaskan Natives. I was really impressed with it's usefulness but it was years before I couldn't deny that anymore and now I can't think of another knife better at skinning and other camp duties. The second knife is my Kukri. I got to work with some Gurkha's when I was military about 35 years ago. But I thought it was just a big goofy knife at first until I got to witness just how multi-function it was. I would rather have a Kukri on Vancouver Island or anywhere else with thick under growth than a large blade or machete. The Kukri is a bit shorter than a machete but it works amazing for brush and you get no blade wobble like machete's. When I was younger I was convinced I needed a big K-Bar or an M-9 for bushcraft. Now I'm in full agreement with you. I only use shorter knives, a leatherman and a pocket knife. With the exception of the Ulu and the Kukri when the situation calls for them. I think I could cut back to only 5 knives and be able to do anything that requires a good blade.
@Bushradical
@Bushradical 4 жыл бұрын
If you've watched this channel you know I'm a big Ulu fan. I make 100+ each year at least. I have a couple vids on making them.....but as for the Kukri....Ive never tried one out. I know a lot of folks love them, but ive just never had one to mess with. Any suggestions as to which brand to try?
@rottdogg8926
@rottdogg8926 4 жыл бұрын
@@Bushradical Absolutely, from watching you and Brooke's videos on the Ulu I knew you were both fans. My comment was merely intended as support of what you've both been saying. I worked with Alaskan Native tribes for over a decade and have personally witnessed the magic native women do with the Ulu. I can't personally use the Ulu with such precision and function but I can appreciate it. As for the Kukri, I'm not a brand snob and don't even know what brand mine is. And since I am no knife expert it would be vain and ignorant of me to even suggest a brand. Especially considering the number of people, yourself included, who know far more about knife building than myself. I just think of these two blades as uniquely functional and widely underappreciated for how useful they are. No disrespect towards you intended.

The ulu knife is funny knife. Most people down state and a lot of Alaskans don't really know what the you is. Yeah they see the semi circular knife and know it comes from Alaska. Well long story short, my daughter teaches up in east central Alaska out in the villages. One year I said I wanted a you knife.. So she ask one of the villagers if he would make a you knife for her father. And he ask her why her father wanted a woman knife. I thought it was funny and the fact that the blade has CHAMPOIN circular saw blade stamped on it. But it is great for spinning a seal or making salad.

I’ve been collecting since the late 80’s. I’ve got an RMJ original I bought from Ryan Johnson himself ( hammer forged by him from an old pry bar) at Ft. Lauderdale Fl. War Memorial Auditorium When he was first starting out. I bought it used. It was his personal knife he used in a sheath he made. My absolute favorite knife made from 01 steel. Perfect heat treat. Got his forge stamp on the knife and “RMJ Forge” stamped on the back of the leather sheath. It’s a one of a kind knife he never produced more of. And almost exclusively makes hawks now. Nothing hand forged by him from scratch with hammer and anvil. I got lucky.

Living in the UK we're kinda restricted by stupid knife laws, living close to Glasgow restricts me even more, as police don't take too kindly to people who carry, due to the bad name that the city got for knife wielding eejits...Lock knives - BANNED ... Knives over 3 inch blade length - ILLEGAL...For the safety of the public aspect yeah,it's all good,but for people who wish to get out and do stuff bushcrafty :( Stopped and searched because you're carrying a backpakc and a tent, automatically assumed you're also carrying a non regulation knife as well...LAWS ARE SHITE !

My mora has made so many meals and is a great camp knife. My old timers are great steel and always come hunting. Both of these selections have likely been with me for well over 10k kms in the bush on foot. The machete has just served me so well for everything and never let me down. I guess we all have our favourites.

I dinged it on a rock the other day though😩. No more fancy edge from the shop. I have a knife coming on Monday that I think my give it a run for it’s money though. The boat tail scandi also from LT Wright. It is a lot like that first knife you showed but made with the same steel as your Genesis. I really want you to get this Lagom in your hands. The Cold Steel Norse Hawk, when removed from the handle, is a great Ulu knife. I have one and I've used it for camping many times, both on and off the handle. Two tools in one. My three favorite blades, thats a hard one. I've been collecting knives since the early 80's but I'll try and pick three out. 1. Just got it this year, the Becker BK16, awesome little knife, and holds a great edge. 2. Condor Hudson Bay knife. I've had mine for three years, and love it. 3. Not a knife but the Cold Steel Norse Hawk. Great Tomahawk, and when you take the blade off the handle, you have an Ulu knife. So two tools in one.

Another great video and admire the Old Hickory / Forge Craft which I've been carrying for 55 years . An Ulu is awesome and I wonder if you have made one from the top of a coffee can or other heavy duty tin can . Thanks for this video .

Yes - L6 saw steel is infinitely better than the lid from a tin can . I meant an improvised "knife" made from a tin can = which can skin and butcher small and even large game - used for cleaning fish and removing scales - fire tinder prep etc. Weighs almost nothing and sheath is made from scrap leather or cardboard and duct tape . Always in the pocket of a hunting jacket and tackle box . THX & ATB

LOL! I was a lead vocalist/writer for over 25 years Whip. For the first ten years my stage name was John Blackrose, and I do have a black rose tatt! PREEMPTIVE APOLOGIES for the novel you're about to ignore! You probably know that I'm an absolute menace with longed winded posts, but I can't help myselfish! LOL! I'm actually about to replace that track with a track which I've started to get closer to what the final deal will be, so there'll be less tin and more thick, mid range tones. So when you get a chance, have another listen. I'm recording all my personal all time favorite songs to help me get my vocals back in shape, but mostly because I just love these songs and have wanted to record them for many years. The first ten years or so I was playing my absolute favorite bands in all cover bands.Beatles, Wings, classic rock from 6-s - 70s That was the last gasp days of live bands in my home town Toronto - pronounced "Tron-Oh" before bars started using disc jockeys to save money. So around that time bands were scouting my ass, and I resisted for a long time because I wasn't interested in doing full originals, but when the club scene dried up, I decided to take a crack at the big burrito! So I joined a great original band and decided to take a new stage name so people wouldn't mistake the band with my past groups. I started out with Johnathon Von Bronzesnake, figuring a fiddy buck name like that was bound to fool people to thinking I was awesome! LOL!! I was getting better, and better at vocals, but my true gift turned out to be writing, and the musicians in the three or four original groups I was in back then, were always amazed at how I could write awesome songs in ten or fifteen minutes! One or two of people's favorites were completed in five minutes. LOL! Boy did I fool them!! LOL! So, one of the very best bands back then was right when "metal" took the throne, and that group were always being talked about in musician circles. So one summer we held a huge bash at the guitar players house, which was in the middle of nowhere, and so we were able to sell over 200 tickets in a week or so, and I didn't count, but the best estimation I could make was close to 350 or 400 people turned up, and we had a 10,000 watt system!! LOL! Two guys from "Another Lie" turned up, that's the band people loved and ironically, I had left a band called "White Lie" to join "Venger" which seemed very much like destiny to me! lol Any long, long story short, those two guys told me there were there to speak to me about leaving Venger to join Another Lie. It was a hard decision because of all the people I had worked with, these guys were very important, dear friends and I turned the offer down. Ian, my dear friend who was the guitar player in Venger got wind of the offer and he encouraged me to take the opportunity. He actually said I had progressed to the point where Ian truly believed I could get a real shot at the big league, and he was truly thinking about MY future and convinced me to go for it, because these opportunities don't come along very often, if at all. So, I joined and my new stage name was John Von Bronzesnake, then John Bronzesnake, and finally Vaughn Bronzesnake, which is an incredibly genius play on "Von" Bronzesnake!! ;() The End! LOL!! Jack - Canada

@@Bushradical No problem, I was being slightly sarcastic. For price with much higher performance, Moras are the best. They are not Ray Mears Woodlores but all Moras preform just as well yet most Moras are very affordable. The Moras that work as well or outperform the knives in the video above are the: - The *Mora Robust* (the amazing bargain bushcraft knife) - $16 USD - The *Bushcraft Black* or *Bushcraft Orange* - $46 USD - The Mora *Garberg* stainless or carbon - $76 to $100 USD Most people use the cheaper Moras ($10 to $25 USD) because they are expendable, they are economical, & how well they work in the field. In the World & the USA no wise outdoorsman would not have at least one *Mora* in his pack. Stay frosty on the post 100th Veteran's Day

I dont know man , Gerber is shit. Esee and Ontario and condor use 1095. Id say get a dope Finnish puukko cause they perty. Personally I use a glock 81 or a Mora or a dagger for fun. A hatchet or a machete from El Salvador cause they are the best in the world.
