If you like Chinese fantasy novels, may I suggest Bridge of Birds, by Barry Hughart, which won the World Fantasy Award in a tie with Mythago Wood by Robert Holstock - & I think The Ceremonies by T.E.D. Klein was nominated for the award in that particular year as well, making 1985 a good year for the genre. Anyway, I knew your selections here would be eclectic Your definition of fantasy fiction is the right one - you don't let yourself get walled in by one type of story. All in all, an excellent, & wide ranging list. Well done, & thanks.

A really great selection! 'He who drowned the world' is on my tbr as well (but first a reread :')) Hmmm I read more backlist titles than new releases, but Starling House would be up there, as well as The salt grows heavy and Titanium Noir. I am AI was a very good novelette as well. ❤

Another awesome video! The only two I have read are The Basilisk Throne and He Who Drowned the World. Thrilled to see them both ranked so highly on this list. They were probably my favorite 2023 fantasy reads. The rest of the books mentioned were either already on my tbr or will be added. And can we talk about the amazing cover to Elder Epoch?? Do people write stand-alone stories anymore? I suppose publishers need to milk every possible dime, but come on. As with films that all seem to run 3+ hours anymore, there was an artistry to crafting succinct tales that seems lost.
