The haircut looks good! And great list. Hard to argue with the picks, I've read everything except the Riverfall Chronicles and the last two Mortal Techniques books. Top 10s are hard to do, to be fair, and they're perfect for letting a viewer know right off the bat if your tastes are going to be of interest to them. They're usually the first thing I look for whenever I find a new channel I may want to sub to!

Top 5: 1. LotR. Everything else pales in comparison. I read it at 11 years old and a passion was born. 2.. First Law Trilogy. Oh, the characters! 3. ASOIAF (3 great books and then....?) I think this will tumble down my list if GRRM doesn't finish it. 4, All of Robert E Howard's Conan stories (these were the stories that showed my 12 year old self that fantasy could operate in a different mode than Tolkien - it was the 80s and the market was flooded with cheap Tolkien clones. Conan is flawed but brilliant, but not for modern sensibilities). 5. Not a series, but Neil Gaiman's American God's is just one of the most original books I have ever read. 15 years later entire scenes spring to mind. Honourable mention: Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake. It was so different, so ponderous but simultaneously familiar (being English) that it took all my will power to finish it; but, somehow, it made an indelible mark on me. For good or ill? I'm still not sure.

I know I said this before in another Malazan video of yours that my Malazan journey is so similar to yours, where I read the first 4 books 12 years back, somehow couldn't continue, but still felt it is the best fantasy series of all time just below LOTR. Despite not finishing the series, for 10 years I used to advocate to everyone how great this is. Then I finally restarted it 3 years back and just finished it last year, and it became by far the best fantasy series of all time surpassing even LOTR, and I doubt anything else will ever change that. Still reading Kharkanas now. I am very excited for you to continue your reread, and get to book 5. Really want to see how you like the later books, as the last 4 books is when Erikson goes above and beyond what most other fantasy authors go for.

Awesome video Tori, I've heard so many great things about both Long Price and Malazan. It's probably an unpopular opinion, but I have an issue with the way Green Bone Saga was marketed as epic urban fantasy with magic, etc. I've read the whole thing, and I don't feel the magic had any significant impact on the story. However, if it would have been marketed as ninja gangster families showdown saga with martial arts, mayhem and blood, I would have absolutely given it 5 stars easily. But maybe that's just me...

I won’t go a full Top Ten but I can give you my Top 3. 1- The Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson. The whole thing lol it’s so good 2- The Dresden Files. Easily the best Urban Fantasy with the most misunderstood, selfless, self-sacrificing, Protagonist I’ve ever seen. There’s no one you’d want next to you more on the worst day of your life. There are other phenomenal characters in this world but there aren’t many fictional characters on the same Tier as Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden 3- The Mercy Thompson Series. You talk about the Green Bone Saga and it’s lived in world and that’s the best way to describe this Series. You feel, even early on in Book 1 Moon Called, that you know Mercy like you’ve known her your whole life. Great Mash-up Verse with Werewolves, Witches, Vampires, Skinwalkers, Fae and more. Honorable Mention would be specifically The Dark Artifices Trilogy of the overall Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare. Don’t see Nephilim used as a powered character very often and it’s a nice change of pace. Another Mash-Up Verse like Mercy and Dresden (I’m sensing a pattern lol) with a great Lore. The Mortal Instruments Trilogies (yes there’s two of them lol) are good not great but I really connected with the characters in the Dark Artifices.

I'm not even going to try to rate the series, nor do I guarantee that what follows are even my top series, but they're what come to mind right now. Caveats: No straight LitRPG or Super Hero books, which feel like different genres from fantasy. No LotR, because it's a novel, not a series. No sub-series, because that's even more too hard than this already is. And my Top 10 is in base-12 today. * Dresden Files, Jim Butcher * Amber, Roger Zelazny * Garrett, P.I., Glen Cook * Midkemia, Raymond Feist * Valdemar, Mercedes Lackey * Paladin's Legacy, Elizabeth Moon * Vlad Taltos, Steven Brust * Five Gods World (Penric & Chalion), Lois McMaster Bujold * Guardians of the Flame, Joel Rosenberg * Myth Adventures, Robert Asprin * War God's Own, David Weber * Monster Hunter International, Larry Correia

Nice list. We actually only share one in our top 10 though I've read at least one book from 6 of your top 10. I wasn't a fan of the Farseer trilogy; just didn't like the character of Fitz; I read two books and had to put it down; I did like her writing and most of her other characters; but if I don't like the main POV character I'm probably not going to like the books either. I also wasn't that big of a fan of Gentleman Bastards but that is one I think I will revisit one day. Faithful and the Fallen, Mistborn Era 1 and ASOIAF have all been in my top 10 at one point or the other but have fallen out of it in recent years. All of them are still in my top 25 though. Here is my current top 10: 10. The Belgariad/Malloreon by David Eddings (been in my top 10 for 30 years; heavy nostalgia pick) 9. KIngkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss (I expect this will drop out of my top 10 in the next year or so; for the same reason ASOIAF is no longer there; it will never be finished) 8. The Band by Nicolaus Eames(only 2 books but I think it will be finished sooner rather than later) 7. Broken Empire/Red Queen's War by Mark Lawrence (new entry this year; I group them together because they tell two sides of the same story basically) 6. Mistborn Era 2 (I liked the characters a lot better in Era 2 than I did in Era 1) 5. Malazan Book of the Fallen (the best world building in fantasy. Period. But I liked the characters of the 4 ahead of it better; the way Erikson wrote the story it took me awhile to really get attached to anyone) 4. Drenai Saga by David Gemmell (been in my top 10 for 25+ years; I've cried more to this series than I ever have for things that happened in real life including close relatives funerals; not sure what that says about me but there it is, lol) 3. Stormlight Archive by Sanderson (already ignored your rule about 3 books and now I'm ignoring the one about multiple series by the same author; technically Sanderson is involved in 3 of my all time favorites; oddly enough he isn't my favorite living author though; book 5 coming out in Dec may change things up a bit) 2. First Law universe by Joe Abercrombie (Joe is my favorite living author; at times it just seems like he is writing for me personally, lol. In his book The Heroes is felt like he was in my head and took portions of my personality and created two of the main POV characters; just absolutely amazing character work. But he isn't my favorite author of all time) 1. Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan/Sanderson (been my favorite series since 1997 and will probably always will be; these characters became my friends over the course of this series; when it ended in 2013 I went into an EIGHT YEAR reading slump because of it; it felt like I had lost someone really dear to me; I loved the ending and I absolutely hated it at the same time) I love watching lists like this; KZbin keeps me updated on them pretty well, lol. I get all kinds of ideas from them; I'll have to look into the Mortal Techniques series; first time I have seen it mentioned.

I haven’t read a lot of fantasy, but my top ten probably looks something like: 1. Harry Potter 2. The Faithful and the Fallen 3. The Wheel of Time 4. The Lord of the Rings 5. The Chronicles of Conan 6. The Riyria Revelations 7. The Dresden Files 8. Chronicles of Narnia 9. The Legends of Drizzt 10. Mistborn Era 1 This list will subject to change and I’m sure will not look remotely similar after I’ve read more, but this is it as it stands right now. I fully expect Malazan, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn and the Realm of the Elderlings to be in the Top 10 at some point.

Haircut is A+ Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for just singling out a particular series from "The Realm of the Elderlings". I hate when people lump everything from the "The Realm of the Elderlings" as 1 thing when they are essentially 3 different series....The Fitz and Fool stuff being 1(and my fav), The MadShip(only read the first book but was just meh and didn't read more) stuff is completely different and a separate series and the RainWild Chronicles(just stayed away from as it doesn't seem like many people at all really like it) is yet another different series. Also, thank you for NOT including LoTR or TWoT. : )

🔟 “Top Tens are not easy! I’ve thought about this for weeks.” And that will be why I don’t have my own top ten to drop in the comments I’m afraid 😁 I couldn’t even do a SciFi list, and I’m a natural SciFi-boy over Fantasy. Some of my major 5⭐️ awards are from a couple of decades ago. Should I do a re-read to see how they hold up to this day? 🤔Probably can’t rank ‘em without doing so 😰

I will never ever move Malazan as my GOAT. Ever since I've finished it almostt3 years ago, I'm still struggling to find anything close to it. The only thing I can think of is Bakker's Second Apocalypse.

I DNF Mistborn and Jade City. Sanderson and I do not mix. Also, Lies Of Lock Lamora DNF. Malazan, I might give it a go but I did DNF Gardens of the Moon with my first try. Fantasy (No scifi included) 1. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever 2. Kingkiller 3. Conan the Barbarian 4. A D&D trilogy starting with White Plume Mountain 5. Nevernight 6. Tad Williams Bobby Dollar with the 2nd book one I could not put down. 7 The Grave of Empires by Sam Sykes. 8. Ethshar by Lawrence Watt-Evans 9. LOTR 10. A Short Stay In Hell. I am not sure of this order but this'll do for now.
