My favorite part of watching your uploads is your personal journey before and after you started your channel. You make us believe we too will find a good deal out in the wild. I had the luck in traveling to Maine in 1981 on a summer vacation trip and stopped in a nautical shop with lots of trinkets. Upstairs l found a box of magazines. When l got to the bottom of the box l found many issues of Tales to Astonish from issue 48 and up. The owner wrote 10 cents a book on the box. I bought the box for $5!! It’s my favorite find to this day.

That's the dream to find someone to give that many books for such a deal, and you're right that collecting is what a person finds interesting. Not letting the money media persuade how you collect will keep the culture going for years to come. Because if time has shown, that what's not valuable today can change tomorrow.

Totally agree with your views on enjoying a comic over speculating or hunting monetary value. Yes, there is no denying the excitement you feel when a comic you own suddenly becomes ‘hot’, but for me, I want to hold the comic, read the comic, enjoy the comic (and sometimes smell the comic … I can’t be the only person doing that). Surely that is what the creators wanted?

Good idea! Maybe at some point this winter I’ll have time to talk about my favorite stories I picked up, especially if they are $1 books. As for the antiques, yeah I guess that was a tease! I’m not sure how I would organically fit that into my channel but maybe a few pick ups here and there especially if I get them at a flea market while hunting for comics. The other thing I worry about is some of the stuff I collect is very strange and there might be a lot equally awkward comments.

Happy 2023 Mike. It did my heart good to see you using a proper spirit level, can't beat those olde-timey tools - never runs out of battery power and never loses internet connection. It's my firm belief that our love of comics is simply the surface manifestation of the Collecting Gene, a mutation which many humans share. One test for this gene is to show the subject a numbered item (eg this X-Men card is #22 of 100): if their reaction is to drive all over town looking for the remaining 99 cards, they possess this gene. I know I do. Web Of Spider-Man #1: beautiful Charles Vess cover, love his work. Strange Tales #169: I'm still amazed at how much this one goes for considering how little Brother Voodoo has done in the Marvel Universe over the decades, and really nothing all in the movies. Star Wars #68: Gene Day was a brilliant artist, his work on Master Of Kung Fu is stunning; we lost him far too young. Amazing Spider-Man #46: those colours just work so well together, masterfully done. Mike, it's so refreshing to hear you talk about enjoying comics for their own sake regardless of monetary value, for the story and art and the chance to share them with your son. You understand this hobby better than so many KZbinrs out there and completely deserve you channel's success.

Very cool, I feel exactly the same way about comics. I'd tell people #1 collect whatever you enjoy. Not just because it might be worth big bucks one day. So great your explaining that to your son too. I agree about the CGI. etc graded cased comics too. I got my very first comics around 1966 probably Batman and Superman ones. But in early spring of 68 I was there as a six year old. When the second Marvel explosion all hit the stands brand new. Ironman#1, Sub-Mariner #1, Capt.A #100, Incredible Hulk #102, etc. ASM in the issues #50's-on ward. Also was given and was able to buy some Tales To Astonish and Tales of Suspense like new. As well as DC Neal Adams, Gil Kane books.

I had a few of the early x-men books. My earliest one was was a #27. I sold my collection because kind of outgrew the hobby. Got bored with them and sold them back in 1994. One the best finds, I had was a X-Men at the Texas state fair. Got it at antique store for a couple of dollars. You never go wrong collecting what you love and enjoy.

Loved this.Thought you might like my little story from the city of Leeds UK.In 1965 in our big indoor market my 11 year old self came across an old guy with just a big table of comic books.I had just discovered comics from the USA recently and had a couple of dozen marvel and DC.Here the guy was selling second hand comics for 4 old UK pence each. He would buy them back off you for 2 pence the next week. The two comics I could afford to buy were Avengers 4 The return of Captain America good enough in itself and great condition but the other was Amazing Fantasy 15 .Of course the first appearance of Spiderman. Also in great condition .It was only 3 years old.Of course I didn't know the significance of this comic then I sure do now.Which brings me to the real bummer of my tale .A few months down the line for some stupid 12 year old old behaviour I had my comics confiscated to pay my aunt back for that behaviour. My comics were given to my seven year old cousin by her.A few weeks later at her house I saw him throwing the comics about and literally destroying them all That was the last I saw of them.I dread to think what the value of them all would be today particularly with Amazing Fantasy going these days for up to a million dollars or so.Keep up the good work.👍and happy new year.
