Princess Tutu has been my favorite anime since I watched it and tbh I'm not sure if anything will ever top it. It hits hard enough if you like magical girl anime, it hits even harder if you're a writer or like analyzing fiction in a structural way, and hits WAY harder if you like ballet or classical music. I like all of those things, so Princess Tutu essentially came into my house and said "I live here now" and I said "thank you ma'am."

I’m the exact same way right now. I think I’ve been coming to this channel for about six or seven years since I first started watching anime and I also still need to get on with finishing Clannad and start After Story. I’ve been putting it off all this time due to the emotional rollercoaster people say it is and I still continue to try and catch up with all the videos this great channel has put out. I really need to get on with it soooon. Plus you are right. Made in abys has been my favourite ever since it came out too, It's hard to explain, it's hard to reccomend sometimes, it's made my wallet lighter in pusuit of the manga, blu ray's and figure collecting, but I love it with all my heart. I can't wait for season 2 to be animated, mostly out of morbid curiosity on how they're going to handle it. Deep soul was a masterpiece and if they can do the same to the next arc I'll be fucking impressed, It's going to be way harder but if anyone can do it, its Kinema and Kevin.

I'd only seen it when I'd seen about 30 anime. Now I've probably seen like 90+ so what made it so cool when I saw it the first time may have less impact now that I'm more exposed to anime.

I absolutely agree with the Nana recommendation! The tall, very thin characters kind of weirded me out at first, but the story and characters really sucked me in. If you want a mature romance anime that doesn't sugarcoat life, Nana is the show for you. If I could purchase a physically copy to add to my collection, without having to sacrifice limbs, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Gintama is my favorite anime of all time. It really affected how I view life and how I live my own, it taught me a lot about what life is really about. There were a lot of things in the show that I resonated with personally and despite all the sadness and gloom, life is still worth living

Mysterious Girlfriend X! It has been ages ago I read the manga, almost forgot about it until you brought it up. It really is a theme that sure is hell kinky. For Moribito, I am still hoping one day we get a second season... Not sure would the author of the novel allow. It has such a good story and MC, rarely do main character uses spear, and it is one of my favourite weapon. I still stand-by Deen FSN has its place. It is the series that pull me into Fate world, and it is the one that puts Saber as the main character.

Lots of great choices but I feel Kino's Journey for the #11 choice is the standout for me. I've always been such a big fan of that story from the atmosphere and the unique tones, the OST, and just, the classic feel. It's such a gem of a show, I'm glad it's taken such a high list! I should also mention, if you've enjoyed Clannad for After Story, I highly recommend you trying out Little Busters for its equivalent season, Refrain. It's made by Jun Maeda/Key as well, and although it's not adapted by KyotoAnimation, it's still a sturdy adaptation of a story that really does something unique with its storytelling that most visual novels don't have. It's my favorite anime of all time that even surpassed Clannad itself, so it might tickle your fancy!

My top has remained unchanged for a very long time. You did a video on it a LONG time ago, and it's showcased on your bookshelf behind you: Haibane Renmei. The reasons you loved Clannad, are the same reasons I love Haibane. It's helped me a few times in the past, and simply entertained me countless times more. Yoshitoshi Abe has expressed interest in making a sequel. I'm not optimistic it'll ever happen, but I desperately hope so!

I really REALLY can't tell you what my favorite is. Maybe it's because I have commitment issues, maybe because I forgot 80% of the anime I've seen. Maybe because depending on my mood there is always a different anime at the top of my head when asked. A kid recently asked me for anime recommendations and I blanked completely. Aside from the obvious and popular ones, I could not think of anything. After that, I keep remembering anime I've seen that I like far more than what I recommended at the time. Now I keep a list on my phone :D At this particular time, I would say my favorite anime is "March comes in like a lion" . Maybe,. Possibly. God I hate that I don't have a fave.

Kino's Journey, yeah this dude is legit. Time to add some to my watchlist. I guess Made in Abyss never did it for me that much because no matter how god tier the worldbuilding is, the mein characters aren't really the main star of the show, which made it fall kinda flat for me, but the final episode of the final season is a straight up masterpiece. The second season I think is all around much better because the main antagonist almost becomes a main character and gets fleshed out much more, even having the spotlight, along with the flashbacks, so overall season 1 much more world driven and season 2 way more character driven, which is why I enjoyed it more. Great video, had to add some to the watchlist.

Call me a normie anime fan but I was expecting at least some of the typical "bests" of the likes of "Full Metal Alchemist:Brotherhood", "Death Note", and "Cowboy Bebop". Came for Clannad: After Story. Was not disappointed. Top 3, too?!! But was it only because Clannad: After Story is available on HiDive? Doesn't matter. The fact it was favorite for a time and only trumped by a few others is meaningful. It still is my #1 for me. AoT has broken its way towards the top, but CAS is just too great. There has never been an anime that I so routinely put on while I'm going to bed, that I've watched so many times, and not only watched so frequently but still cried at various points. You're spot on when you said you can learn a lot about how to treat others. It was foundational for me when I was just 15, and still influences how I act in relationships to this day almost 10 years later. AoT will never be that for me, despite how great its plot, characters, music, and animation are - I can't learn how to treat others around me and be a part of my community from AoT, which is why CAS will remain my #1 for a long time to come.

For me I thought clannad was just ok but then I saw after story which quickly brought it to be my #1 anime, it also caused it’s first season to be really good for me because you get to see all the subtle foreshadowing and stuff that will come back at the end, it was also the first anime to make me cry from happiness so it will always be close in my heart

I think Made in Abyss is very similar to the Manga Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun), in that it is a brilliant masterpiece and objectively extremely good, but I still would not recommend to people. Both will crush your soul. Punpun is a lot darker and more realistic though.

As soon as I saw that Spice and Wolf was 3rd on this list, I knew this would be a pretty based list. S&W doesn't get nearly as much attention anymore and it makes me sad-- I'm rather fond of it. I don't know how to better word it, but it just feels home-y and familiar. Like an anime you'd watch late at night in December. Gunslinger Girl is pretty underrated I'd say. The art style of the original material always reminded me of Haibane Renmei. Eden of the East was weird but by god did it stand out amongst the crowd (and was, from what I remember, actually pretty hilarious. It was visually stunning at the time of it's release). Ghost in the Shell is a classic. Fucking loved Soul Eater-- that's some OG 2000s shit, and a shame the anime stopped where it did. Madoka, Higurashi, Lucky Star, and Chobits are also all pretty good. Chobits became kinda a staple for robot romance going into the 2000s and Lucky Star is just... man it's just a nice time to watch. I remember being just a small kid whilst watching that show on KZbin for the first time. Ahhhh, good times. Magus' Bride is beautiful and it's a shame that people label it a 'p*do show' simply because of the first episode of the anime & the innocence of Elias not understanding what he said. Pretty good list overall, my dude. 👌

Just saying Clannad Afterstory is an AMAZING anime but a hot steaming garbage of an adaptation I don't wanna be that guy, but imma be that guy: They didn't justice to the original VN when it comes to plot and characters The only really good anime adaptation of a VN i've ever experienced is AIR, all the other one have their decent amount flaws (Btw great video as always, got some new stuff for my plan to watch list out of this one)

I thought angelic layer was great as a kid, but then I rewatched it as an adult and it did not live up to my memory of it at all! There is almost no animation and most background characters don't move at all and the scenes look really wooden because of it. I also didn't care for Misaki as a character as much as I did the first time. She was too passive for a protagonist from my perspective of someone who has watched a lot more anime as an adult. I wished it was better because I liked it a lot, but I guess that's how tastes change and grow over time.

HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THAT IS GOOD SOMEONE FINALY MENTIONED MORIBITO! I have been singing this shows praise for 6 years now since my mother found and watched it without me and told me to watch it. I was ashamed I missed it considering I was watching and keeping up with the weekly anime back when it came out :p (I also usualy recommended to people that if they like it they should also check out beast tamer erin (kemono no souja erin) as the 2 shows are based on novels from the same author and have alot in common (erin doesn't have nearly as much actions but the themes and way of telling the story are similar)

I'm surprised that only two of my eight favorite anime series are on that site, and they're both on your list: Kino's Journey and Princess Tutu. I decided to watch all my favorite anime series this year and have only one to go: Baccano. They're all still favorites. Good, puts spotlight on some of the ones you’d normally not watch because just try out finding an anime that you’ve never heard before, maybe one that’s on there, maybe on MAL (recommend checking for ones with a rating of 7.2-7.8) and watch it without any prejudice and prior knowledge. You’d be surprised at just how many hidden gems you’ll find that way

Made in Abyss is one of my favorites too. Azumanga Daioh is also really great, especially if you want a show that's just funny and not too plot heavy. I just rewatched it and Lucky Star earlier this year! I have a fondness for moe anime lol

Patlabor what a throwback.. Thought Houseki no Kuni (Land of the Lustrous) was over, welp seems like it's only on a long long hiatus. While I agree one Chihayafuru making you excited about the Karuta games and interested in the game. The first two seasons plots are practically the same, just one year older. The third season transforms/evolves a bit, makes the plot finally move a bit and the characters too, but not in my favor as I progressively got more annoyed by the main trio. Well at least the manga is close to a closure in around 30 chapters (at least I hope) .
