I was Navy, even Ceremonial Guard. I've always thought the Marine Corps was by far the most sound and professional with their marching. Their Drill Instructors have some damn good command voices. I always strived to emulate that inflection in command voice. Army has some sharp Drill Sergeants. Some of their voices were spot on.

People who have not served in a military unit may not know how hard it is to call cadence and run at the same time .... It gets you VERY winded! Takes/makes a massive amount of lung power to do a march of a mile or more! My favorite cadence from back in the day (1977) .... "Birdie, birdie, in the snow; Broken wing, and a broken toe; Took him home, and fed him bread; Then I squished his little head; Was I right or wrong (You're right); Correct me if I'm wrong (You're right); Am I right; Am I wrong; Am I right or wrong (You're right); Count it on down now 1-2-3-4; 1-2 .... 3-4!"

You just called the wrong cadences. A smart cadence-caller makes sure that the cadence they're calling matches the situation. If you're running the cadence should sound like a chant, preferably one that builds in complexity to take the service-member's minds off of the run. If you're marching at a normal pace, you can focus on the more song-like cadences... I think your leadership probably sucked, and didn't know how to either choose their cadence, or their cadence-callers... Never choose a weak runner as a cadence caller...

My favorite cadence call was running PT during US Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK. 1979 as we were running past the Post Cemetery " Hold your nose and bow your head " " We are passing by the dead "

I’m at Sill now, the Basic Trainees stay over on the east side of I-44 these days. My dad did basic and AIT there in the 80s and now I’m at FABOLC (OBC as you would know it) prepping to go to 1-5FA in a couple months.
@Bill23799
@Bill23799 2 жыл бұрын
@@MusketMan1997 Sorry, I had to look up what " OBC " meant. I was a Sergeant, I worked for a living. Haha. Is Fort Sill still hot as the gates of hell in the summer? After I served three years in West Germany I returned to Fort Sill and served my last seven months as an AIT Instructor at the Lance School. It was so hot that summer we had to order the trainees to drink two canteens of water during the school day. I grew up in New Rochelle, NY . In the summer if we had several consecutive days of temps in the low 100's we called that a " Heat Wave ". At Fort Sill we would call that a cold front moving in.
@Bill23799
@Bill23799 2 жыл бұрын
@@MusketMan1997 I was fortunate to attend 15D Basic training and AIT in the cooler months of late 1979 . I was in C Battery 5th Bn. Most trainees were in open bay barracks but there was a shortage then so they put our unit , which was located in what was called the 6,000 area , into brand new Permanent Party buildings. Haha, we were the only Basic trainees housed in 3 man rooms. Fall and Winter at Sill was so much nicer than summer was in 1983. I attended an artillery power demonstration once. It was cool to see them fire everything from mortars and 105 mm to 155mm and 8" rounds. Now whenever i smell burnt cordite in the morning I think of Fort Sill.
