I grew the Chinese noodle red ones and they’re awesome. I LOVE THEM!! You don’t have to string them when young. They’re delicious canned, pickled, frozen. Also, lettuce can EASILY be grown in a cold frame. Mine continued to grow through 9 degree temps here. I was seriously impressed. I think the key is placement and piling the dirt up around the bottom 2” inside and outside the frames. LOVE SUNCHOKES!!! They’re fantastic pickled! Inulin in them makes them diabetic friendly. You should add asparagus as a perennial, good king Henry and Egyptian walking onions.

@TheMoreYouGrow4 жыл бұрын
To make enough beans to make to make it worth it you would have to have a large amount of space, but at present dry beans are just too cheap to buy in bulk if food security is your goal that it wouldn’t be cost effective to grow that much

Like so many others, I came via Jess at Roots and Refuge. LOL. Good info. I planted sunchokes or Jerusalem Artichokes this year. God blessed me with a bag of free ones. I ate several, planted several and shared them with someone (with a warning LOL). I knew they get out of control, but that's part of what I like. Food that never stops. I will pick some of the leaves and flowers too. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I like Sweet Potatoes as well and the leaves are also edible, Just don't over pick until harvest time.

Add Malabar spinach to that list! It's not actually a spinach but the fleshy leaves can be cooked and eaten the same way. It vines 6' or more and tolerates summer quite well and it doesn't bolt when temperatures climb. Since it can be trellised it won't take up as much ground space. It's also a perennial in some areas. I stumbled on your channel accidentally while scrolling videos on youtube, but I'm delighted to have found you.

@habibishapur2 жыл бұрын
microgreens are great for quick turnover and year-round availability of fresh greens. The problem, from a food security perspective, is that unless you dedicate a good chunk of the garden to growing plants for seed, you're dependent on a seed bank being able to ship you the seeds.

Surplus greens (especially kale etc) can be dehydrated and added to smoothies, soups, stews later in the year. I will (Yah willing) have enough to can this year too. They aren't a pleasing in texture as fresh, but nutrition on hand is a worthy trade-off 🙂

All those plants (sun chokes, beans, etc) that cause “rumblings” are less potent when you gradually increase the quantity at a meal. Start with a little and increase so your gut bacteria have time to ramp up their populations. They are actually eating the food for us!
