For anyone in the UK, the largest ever Saul Leiter exhibition (to come to the UK) is now open for viewing at Milton Keynes Gallery. Definitely worth the visit! (Milton Keynes is about 30 minutes from London by train! or a 40 minute drive :) )

Haas taught in Yosemite with Ansel and when one student kept praising his Leica, Haas had finally had enough and uttered one of my favorite camera quotes: Leica Schmeica. It is appropriate with Ansels quote : the most important part of the camera is the 12" behind it. My corollary to that is the second most important part of the camera is the 12" ahead of it, the lens.

I'm always inspired by Ernst Haas, just so artistic and different he mastered so many genres of photography. Of course he started as an artist in Europe. Saul is from Pittsburgh like me so I have an affinity for his work!

I’m no photographer but I appreciate it. Especially the great street photographers. I feel as though today too many “steet photographers“ are deemed a success when they don’t hold a candle to these greats. Put aside the nostalgia of historical representations. The greats had a gift for composition and perhaps their less wittingly subjects lent a hand, but overall, it was a matter of pure artistry. What happened?

How do you feel about the characteristics of the cameras these photographers used in relation to modern equipment? Do you like seeing recreation of the nostalgic qualities or are you more interested in exploring the boundaries possible with modern camera features and color capabilities?

Thanks for this selection, particularly drawing my attention to Harry Gruyaert, whose name but not work I knew. I immediately ordered a copy of a book of his photos, one the excellent, inexpensive Photofile series by Thames & Hudson. My goodness Gruyaert's photos are stunning. I think I'll be buying the book you feature very soon...

I am a photographer, and it is likely that I am very ignorant, but for me, street photography is the most indecipherable and scarce of virtues within this art. I have never been able to find one that makes me think "this is a great work of art". Shooting through a wet window, a flock of out-of-focus pigeons, a guy walking on the sidewalk or some shadows reflected in a showcase are photographs that even my grandmother could have taken. I can't believe this style is considered an art!
@kronkite1530 Жыл бұрын
Well, luckily you are an outlier!

In fact, you sound just like my father discussing Paul Klee or Matisse. The paintings of those two old adversaries Adolf and Winston far more to his ‘taste’!
