Re: the New Grey Death Legion, 100% agree, they are my favorite aspect of the ilClan era right now because it works SO WELL. They were formed as a side effect of the Tamar Pact resurgence, the first book with their formation and them literally building their first lance of mechs out of a scrapyard is FANTASTIC, it’s just a very fun flavorful unit.

I'm an outlier here but the 17th Recon Regiment (Commancheros Cabelleros) was always a unit that just resonated with me. The mix of people, cultures, ideologies that all hated each other but loved eachother at the same time...but if you messed with them don't expect them to back down from a fight. The integration of not mech based forces into their novel arch's was also a nice touch and just added some spice to their story.
@Dang_Near_Fed_Up Жыл бұрын
I am still trying to get through the Cabelleros books, I just can't get into the writing style for some reason. But the unit seems to be on the ragged edge of falling apart due to internal conflict, so much so that I don't find them particularly appealing. As a veteran I can attest to the effect of shared endured hardships forming a galvanized unit that will do amazing things to help one another, and one of the first things to go OUT is those internal conflicts. How a unit can endure with so much internal friction just does not ring true.

I like the 21st Centauri Lancers. They are a merc unit that goes through some serious turmoil in the 3050’s when the WoB hold them hostage as the former masqueraded as them on Terra, and when they got bombed out on Tukayyid in the late 3060’s (a big reason for me not liking the Blakist era personally. Warships…ugh). I love that the Killer Bees - another merc unit I’m fond of - end up being a part of their rebuilding forces. I’m happy they’ve been “reactivated” as a separate command to the 21st Centauri while operating in the Hinterlands, thanks to Thos Cardella’s efforts (a character from clickytech I am happy is still around). The other is Tooth of Ymir. They are neither the best, nor the worst. They have access to fun tech later in the setting, and also have that ridiculous Franken-Annihilator called “Schwere Gustav”, I believe named after the huge WWII railroad delivered artillery cannon.

I have quite a few but I've always wanted to field a small command called" Battle Magic," it is actually the subordinate mech command for a group called "Mech Magic." A elite group if master rated battlemech technicians specializing in customization and advanced weapons installation and repair. They're professionalism earned them the patronage of the Wolf's Dragoons on outreach before that world was nuked by the WOB. They were taught by Dragoon techs not only on how to install/replace clan tech equipment but also on how to actually repair this class of gear, so there services I would imagine was in high demand by other mercenaries that could afford their services. Battle Magic was used for raids to aquire high tech weapons and equipment for the use of their customers. When not on missions the mechs parade colors were black and white and kept in pristine condition and cleanliness so the command can show off examples of Mech Magic's work to potential clients.

Seems like you like dead mercs the most. Which is fair, I guess, some of those dead mercs have very good stories. My list would have the Roughriders, Eridani Light Horse, and Camacho's Caballeros all towards the top, but mercenaries are generally my favorite way to interact with Battletech. One of the things I specifically don't like about the Blakist Era is how most of the interesting commands with long history are destroyed for no good narrative reason. I would have no problem with some of them dying, but almost all of them do. Then you add in an interesting unit like the Heart of Blake and just kill them too. Eh, not great. Still, not a bad list. The 12th Star Guard and Grave Walkers are just cool as heck and as a merc player and fan you're right that I do not like the Jade Falcons or Wobblies(even if I'm happy that they existed because you have to have factions to dislike).

Agreed. I liked the Patrick Kell iteration of the Kell Hounds best.

For me my top three are 1. Wolf's Dragoons 2. Kell Hounds and 3. The Chaos Irregulars

Chaos Irregulars are based. The only reason they weren't on this list is because they became a FWL line-unit

@@BigRed40TECH While I love their unconventional style and wish to see more on them, that is the big disappointment about their story arc, where they wound up in the end.

never forget the many noble merc and house units who fell to the clanner scum and their plot armor. they deserve to remembered and avenged. also no reference to the glorious 12th Vegan Rangers? For shame!

Well, before I watch the video, I’ll just give my top 10 in no particular order. Atlas III, Scarecrow, Axman, Wolfhound, Timberwolf, Marauder, King Crab, Victor, Phoenix Hawk and Highlander.
@BigRed40TECH Жыл бұрын
Those are all battlemechs though, not the units they go in! XD Fair choices, no judgement, but I'm more ranking the units themselves this time around :)

@@BigRed40TECH I just realized what the video was about after posting. Granted, I don’t really know much about mercenaries so I guess this will be a good primer but if I had to say my favourites probably the Roughriders and the grey death Legion.

I remember I wanna go and one of the old fas. A Mercer unit called the vixens that were in all aerospace fighter team made up of female Pilots. And I thought that was very interesting. I only recall reading it in like one paragraph in 1 book under a description of a fighter that was their primary aircraft. I believe and I've been trying to find that 1 lately. Because I got so many of these books.

I always went 'Off Brand', those units that were named and maybe got a paragraph or two in the books. Always Faithful, Filthy Lucre...and for one of the OG Five I always thought the 21st Centauri Lancers were a good story waiting to happen. Although if I had my wish, a story about Wilsons Hussar's in the Jihad could have been very good as well.

They're almost certainly going merc again, they've been mad at Liao for years too.

Definitely the "Raging Horde". I think what Dark Age and IlClan really gifted us is a merge of Clans and IS, that first needed to have a bit of spice and flexibility in their lore. Now, when "they are a part of IS" -- it is not that difficult to imagine a clan-origin merc command. And "Raging Horde", from it's name to it's concept of elemental-only merc unit just distills is to the core.
@BigRed40TECH Жыл бұрын
There was a Clan originated mercenary in the latest issue of Shrapnel, actually. :)
