yeah, the prescience of 2000AD was incredible. Zoobing, competitive gluttony and all sorts of weird social mores. And the scripts were pretty original too. Strontium Dog had a storyline one time that was the blue print for The Hunger Games and Battle Royale and there was this judge Dredd Novel I read (which were a bit like spin offs like the Doctor Who books which had exactly the same villain as The body hopping demon in Denzil's 'Fallen'. The 2000ad documentary 'Future Shock' is well worth watching for an introduction of the title's origins and tenacity. I'm amazed it's kept going. (There is a Rogue Trooper film (by Alex Garland) in the pipeline. It's going to be an animation, which I was dissapointed to hear initially. But kind of warming to the idea now.

@@michaelbartlettfilm I was lucky. My parents got into 200AD whilst I was an infant. By early 1980s, they handed me the collection and I perservered with the subscription until around Prog 950. Still have the comics and many graphic novels collections.

Great video. Sad news though about Kevin O'Neil. His artwork on early Nemisis The Warlock (I think book 1 and 2) is in my opinion some of the greatest comic art ever done. All great choices, and of course Dredd has to be Number1. Long long time since I read the great comic but my love for it has always been there even 30 plus years later. P.S... Also, it appears that I'm your 50th subscriber... which is nice!

Agree with your number one, but from there realise how difficult it is to assemble all of those great characters and stories in a top ten - well done for that! I absolutely loved the early years of 2000AD. I would like to humbly invite you to look at my videos on Carlos Ezquerra and Kevin O'Neill and would love to get your comments. wow. Blast from the past. I read when I could get my hands on one from the start and then have everyone from about 83 for about a decade. Weird ones from early days that have stuck in my mind from before I kept copies were 'Meltdown Man' (same artist as Blackhawk) and The VCs which I can't remember even the general premise of but have loads of frames of stuck in my mind's-eye-memory.

Weirdly, I don't remember reading those, but they've both been reprinted and you can get the strips complete now. I'll give them a try.

My 2000AD Sad story, as a boy I was off school one cold and frosty February day, when i saw an advert on TV for a new comic I immediately asked mum for the 8p so i could nip to the local newsagent and buy this comic, that was my first Issue, I became a fan immediately, I was an unusual boy, I liked to keep my comics in pristine condition with everything together( the space spinner, the stickers, I collected every issue until as an adult I joined the military , After a few years, on one leave, I suddenly remembered my comic collecting days and said to my mum what happened to my boxes of comics?? ..."Oh those old things? i threw them out when we moved house"........ every issue from 26 feb 1977 up until Feb 89, in pristine condition, carefully boxed, with all the annuals........ thrown in the bin Gutted................ one of my favourite characters was Bill Savage from story "Invasion" and I was also a fan of M.A.C.H 1 mind you it was a rip off of the 6 million dollar man. apart from that i agree with your selections.

Good choices! Black Hawk, meltdown man, rogue trooper, strontium dog, judge dredd, ace trucking are my favorites. Some of the abc warriors as well, as well as some of nemesis.

Regarding the lack of movie adaptations, there was one that was before "Judge Dredd": "Hardware" (1990). Although I thiink the original Future Shock story is uncredited. Great video. Loved "2000 AD" along with "The Eagle." A recent discovery I made was that girls' comics our youth could be great. I'm speaking here of "Misty" and "Jinty." I got some graphic novels of collected strips recently and they were great. One was very obviously influenced by "Carrie" and another by "The Man in the High Castle." No surpise about the quality, perhaps, as Pat Mills was one of the writers!

Yeah, I could never work out whether I liked Hardware or not. I hadn't read the original story, but I definitely detected the 2000AD influence. I liked its style, but it was a bit...nasty...

Invasion Bill savage and his shotgun was a good one and DR and quinch was a really funny tale of adolescent aliens. So much potential for 2000ad they have just announced a rouge trooper movie ,animated but still i will watch it ,through if it was my choice to make a action film i may go with strontium dog and the "killing" story in particular . I often thought that would translate well on to the screen if done in the right way.

Agreed (it would have been fantastic if Sergio Leone was still around to direct it! I always thought Carlos Ezquerra was influenced by the spaghetti western movies when he drew that strip) Looking forward to Rogue Trooper, too!

Zenith was one of my favourites. I read it the other day and it wasn't quite so striking, I had some problems following the monocrome artwork that I could never remember difficulty with as a teenager. The antagonists, called ' The Lloigor' are so peculiarly spiteful and cruel.

@@phillhollowell4122 Yeah, the Stallone film was dreadful. But I thought the Alex Garland movie was OK. It was more in the spirit of the original strip, and I loved the look of it. I don't know if you've seen the fan movie, Judge Minty? It's actually pretty good, as is their Strontium Dog flick.

2000AD was a rarity here. If you were very, very lucky the local WH Smith's may get in one issue a month, and that issue would be 3 to 4 weeks out of date. There were attempts here to publish 2000AD characters in standalone series, repackaging weeks worth of the original stories into monthly issues. The North American issues had one advantage over the UK originals, in that they were published in full color throughout. Sadly, the North American versions never caught on (the original publishers were small, independent companies. The less said about the later attempt by DC to publish Judge Dredd the better). Of all of the North American attempts, Judge Dredd made the most traction, appearing in many series from various publishers. I was lucky enough to pick up an issue (published by Eagle!) that featured The Dark Judges as drawn by Brian Bolland, and in full-colour (gory) glory! For that issue alone, Judge Dredd will always be my favorite 2000AD character.

I forgot to talk about the Dark Judges there - the single best moment in 2000AD history! Mind you, 2000AD was a rarity in my village in Notts too! My newsagent wasn't keen. But I persevered.

There was also a strip about a sport very much like Rollerball, the name eludes me, but it was a direct rip-off! The Judge Dredd story arc of the Cursed Earth was also influenced by a film called "Damnation Alley", which starred George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent.

The Rollerball strip was called Inferno, I think. It used the same characters from Harlem Heroes.

I’ve been reading since issue 2 Still reading today Liked tornado and starlord Don’t forget Rogue Trooper By the even today every Tuesday at 6pm. Dallas time It’s download 2000 ad Every 2 weeks It’s download megazine Now bear in mind the only strip I read is JD and of course the Rogue spin-offs Jaegir The artwork is gritty and really goes into the war ,,,, And even better the old titles we all loved are there So yeah 54 and still in love with 2000ad Now First dredd movie crap Remake awesome captured everything that makes dredd fantastic Wish they would go with Anime style series for so many of the strips we loved
