Don't know if it's gonna be mentioned or not but here's my layman (5 years semi-professional hobbyist film and digi) advice: Invest in a good sensor cleaning kit !!! Even if you've made as much precautions as possible some dust will gather at some point on the sensor. The cotton swabs with cleaning solution are perfectly fine just make sure to get the right size. You'll spend much less time in editing with a clean sensor. It's even more important if you decide to film with vintage lenses as editing dust out of motion picture is even harder !
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
That's sound advice, thanks for the tip!
@migueljalo97313 жыл бұрын
I only have 3 lenses but I do exchange between them quite a lot. It’s always amazing to me how much dust my sensor has accumulated once I take a really stopped down picture like at f16 or above. I do have cleaning kits but I’m always so scared of damaging the sensor. I have no idea how fragile it really is. Probably a lot, right
@kommissarjupiter76673 жыл бұрын
@@migueljalo9731 Actually it's not as fragile as many think. In modern cameras there's atleast three filters in front of the sensor. High pass, low pass and UV. Blow the sensor out with one of those air blowers and gently wipe with a cleaning swab.

Excellent Video. I have an APS-C Sony Camera, and I use only Vintage manual focus lenses, at this time. Absolutely agree with all the points raised. With one comment. Most of my photography is done in daylight. Therefore the one thing that I thought would be an enhancement, was to one day upgrade to a full frame camera, to get more light on dull days - (I live in Northern Europe), so I could still take pictures on dull windy days, when I need a faster shutter speed. Thanks to this video, I no longer feel inadequate about using an APS-C camera. And can now focus on using it to the best of my abilities without pining for more
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I think you've reached the right decision - crop sensor cameras aren't inherently worse than full frame bodies. When shooting vintage lenses, compared to full frame you'll lose (on aps-c) the outer third or so of the image, but that's not a handicap in itself, unless you absolutely must have it! Of course, you could always use a speedbooster on your existing body to capture more of that image circle.

Loving the comments about the importance of inspiration. My Fuji X100V has inspired me like no other camera I've own. Sometimes, I just like holding it my hands even when I'm not shooting. I find that unless I need the options of interchangeable lenses on my DSLR (or if want to shoot my vintage lenses, which are adapted to my DSLR), my X100V has otherwise become my go-to camera. And it has, without a doubt, improved my ability as a photographic composer and improved my overall skills. So I totally agree with your comments about the importance of inspiration and connecting with the camera because it DOES make big difference to the overall experience of shooting and subsequently, improves the photographic results!

Also, a GX9 with 113 shutter count, again EXC condition., plus grip extension, 1xbatt, and 12-32 kit lens; US$345. I complemented these bodies with OLY 45/1.8 for $160, OLY 75-300 for $150, and LUMIX 20/1.7 for $110. All local purchases of used/EXC equipment via forums OR a little camera store near my office.

I like your statement “I've been caught out buying the latest” haven't we all, when I started it was every 10yrs I upgraded, now it seems to be every 2/3yrs with digital. I've finally settled on Olympus EP-5 and Olympus EM1 Mk 2. The EP-5 I bought about 5yrs ago I was looking at them in Jessops Canterbury and the salesman was telling me the features what struck me was IBIS and the fact that I could with an adapter use my legacy lenses, several Tamrons that I just count part with, I could easily focus with focus peaking on the body OK no autofocus, I was given recently two Minolta MD lenses, wow when you take your time you get nice pictures very sharp but not as tack sharp as the Olympus. I have several pictures blown up to A4 on the wall and printed off a Colour copier and to be honest, when you look at them you can't tell the difference most people glance at pictures from a distance of one to two metres away. Also, remember that you are using only the centre of the legacy lens and this is usually the sharpest part. Talk about upgrading how many camera bags have we bought over time thinking wow this the best and then seeing another one thinking wow isn't that the best. PS id love a full frame digital but just can't afford it.

I began my digital photographic life with a Panasonic GF1. I then moved through the models, G2 to G3 then the G5. ‘Don’t buy an Olympus, the menu system is too complicated’ was what I heard and read. I bought an E-M5. I got the hang of it in time and moved to the E-M5ii for the ibis. I’ll never move to full frame I said. I was given a loan of a Sony A7 by a friend who was selling it. After a week I bought it for £250. In the Christmas sales I bought an A7ii. Again, for the ibis. I now only have the one camera body and a host of Zeiss, Rollei, Takumar, various Russian and Minolta vintage glass. I won’t be buying another body until the A7ii dies of old age. Yes, I’m that pleased with it. You are absolutely correct in saying that we can ‘click’ with certain cameras and that makes photography a joy. That’s where I am today. Thanks for another lovely video, I always enjoy your output.

One thing worth mentioning is that a significant proportion of reviews are carried out when a camera is first released. Firmware releases for modern cameras can make a significant difference to both handling and performance so when doing your research it’s always worth trying to track down the most recent reviews as they are most likely to be using the latest firmware.

Have always needed to handle a camera for comfort before I bought . This policy led to great pleasure in my Olympus OM’s , Nikon FM2’s and so on. Lovely things and a joy to be with. A big but now though - there are so very very few places to be found where you can find and handle.the camera of your interest . Thanks for the insights about camera and system purchasing. Now I have a Canon M50 and a M100, paired with 6 old EF lenses. I want to go Full Frame, I don't "need" to go FF, but I doesn't need to have a camera or take pictures too 😅. It's a hobby that makes me happier, not a rationale thing. I'm a cheap man, so the Canon RP or the Nikon Z5 are far from what I can pay without feeling I'm wasting money. So I will look for an used Sony A7, I will sell all my Canon gear and will buy Sony. I know there are cheap AF lenses from Meike, Yongnuo, etc, and of course cheap excellent vintage lenses too. I love having a second camera (the M100 now) and I have seen old Sony Nex dirt cheap, for that occasions when you need more compact camera. Hi sir, big fan of your work here. Question. I have a Sony a7ii onto which I mostly attach vintage Nikon glass. I have a dumb adapter as they call it. Do you know that it’s possible to get some smart adapter that will allow me to use the ibis inside with these manual focus vintage lenses? Because as of right now I find it a bummer that I have this nice mirror less camera but I can’t use one of its most valuable features. Also, out of curiosity, what do you do for a living besides this KZbin gig? Stay well.

Right know I’m shooting with the Lumix Gx8. I don’t know why they removed the weather sealing on the Gx9 because The Gx8 combined with the Lumix 100-300mm mark II it can take a beating. Still , right now my dream kit of cameras would be the Pentax K-1 because it’s power and K-mount, and the OM-1 from OM Systems for nature and bird photography. Why the OM-1? Pro-capture. Not even the Sony A1 can beat it because of that feature. Mike Lane’s KZbin channel has a video about why he chose the OM-1 instead of the Sony A1. He must have been shooting since the 60’s so he knows what he needs. The Sony A1 is almost €8000 vs OM-1 at around €2000. That says a lot in about how quickly the MFT-systems are starting to compete with high end full frame cameras.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that there was a mechanical watch/clock "ticking" sound through much of the video that was slightly distracting. Love your videos! I've been shooting with an Olympus OM-2N and several of the Zuiko lenses you recommended! Now I'm in the market for a mirrorless camera so this video was helpful. I am thinking splurging on full frame is worth it in order to use my lenses the way I do on my OM-2N.
@zenography79233 жыл бұрын
I would say yes, it's definitely worth it! There's nothing inherently better about full frame as such, but if you want to shoot the old lenses and preserve their full character, it's the best way to do it. Speedboosters are another option of course and they do a very good job, but none that I know of can squeeze quite all of the image onto the sensor - though they do come very close. On balance though, I'd say if you can afford it, go for it!

I think the Canon EOS M50 APSC is the best mirrorless camera for the price of which I just purchased one from Canon Refurbished for $378.00 which does 4K video although cropped, but so what for KZbin head shots with numerous Konica Hexanon lenses..preferably the 21mm f4.

My modern autofocus Sony lenses are gathering a bit more dust since getting bitten by the vintage lens bug. I am looking forward to trying out few more lenses ordered on Ebay, namely the Jupiter 11, Zuiko 50mm f/1.4 and Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4 - all purchases inspired by your enthusiastic and informative reviews. If there is one thing I prefer about the Sony A73 over the Lumix G9, it is the ability to use old 35mm film lenses without a crop factor. It has opened up a much wider world for me to explore. Please google my name to see some images taken with the aforementioned glass on Apr 2.

Great video on buying a used mirrorless cameras. Because the current prices of mirrorless and lenses are unbelievable. They can turn you away from photography. I would ignore the possibility of insects being in a used mirrorless camera. The reason why I often write on videos several months later, because I'm not on here 24/7 you know. I'll never buy Sony cameras because they look to fragile for my liking.

Got a used A7s for an equivalent of $400. A real bargain. Unlike the original A7, these are typically used for video and typically have lots of remaining shutter life. This is also the only model in the 1st gen A7 line which has a completely silent shutter option -- a mechanical shutter is relatively loud in every A7 camera. 12 MP is sufficient unless you want to print real big and it doesn't reveal the flaws of legacy lenses that much. Lower resolution is more forgiving in terms of focus accuracy and shutter discipline - even 1/80th with a 135mm lens is quite feasible. The A7s is about the same size as my old trusty OM-D E-M1 which is just crazy given it has 4x the sensor size. I've seen a big improvement in image quality with legacy lenses compared to the E-M1 + speedbooster, especially at the image borders and corners. The only important downside is ergonomics. The grip is okay, but the buttons and dials are downright terrible compared to the E-M1. Command dials have slippery surface and too much resistance so I avoid using them as much as I can. The little dial on the back is usable, although a bit flimsy. Buttons are almost completely flush with the body and have very little travel. C1 button is too small and very hard to locate by feel. I could use the E-M1 or a Nikon DSLR with gloves on without any problem, but with an A7 I wouldn't dare to try.

That very same lens is now on my recently acquired x-t2 and I can honestly say it feels like I’m seeing the world again with fifteen year old eyes. I’ve had that lens on many an Olympus m4/3 and a Nikon Z6, but noting has given me a welcome and much needed kick in the backside quite like the Fuji has. Just like with loads of other equipment, buy second hand! For PC desktop parts specifically, there's this stigma around buying used parts with non-techies, and I don't get it. People don't seem to have a clue about how silicone degrades, and then sometimes completely refuses advice from even professionals and ignorently, pointlessly pour out their pockets... I did finally go ahead with upgrading my 550D to a 700D. And I must say; coming from an EOS Rebel 2,000 300 (& V) and an Olympus OM-20. All of these spec names like DualPixel AF I think are very overhyped. Like you say, it's nice to have the fastest AF system (to this date), but how often will that fastest AF be used? For me personally it's less than 90% of all of my shooting. The 700D has video tracking focus. Yes, it's slow to lock on, but it works perfectly once it has? Yes. The camera has all of the features I need. Technology and quality doesn't age. People's expectations and requirements do. But are they yours? Is the real question. 🤔

I started with mirrorless cameras when Olympus started their Pen line. This led to a brief switch to Fuji cameras that I thought were a bit better until I switched to a Nikon dslr. I find the mirrorless trend to be total hype - if you can’t sell more $5000 cameras, make the owners think they are outdated and sell them a $6000 camera. Coming from large format, looking at an electronic version of the image compared to studying a real image on ground glass cannot be compared. As the sheep follow the crowd to mirrorless, it is the dslr equipment that is flooding the used market not used mirrorless.

Lovely video as always and great tips! Tbh I am a bit upgrade prone myself. Personally I think upgrades are worth more when they add useful quality of life stuff. Like for example, I am very happy with my Sony A7-3, and wouldn't upgrade to an A7-4 just for more megapixels or better auto-focus. But if that 4 includes some useful things like a tilting screen that makes videos easier or a better viewfinder that just makes the camera more of a joy to use (inspiration and all that) then I would strongly consider it... If anything I wouldn't want many more megapixels because the vintage lenses I love so much work far worse on higher mexapixel sensors >_< It is weird I tend to think of older digital cameras as inherently outdated (unlike older film cameras which still carry some 'charm') but the other day I watched a video (this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2WuXpl-fKl9hac ) comparing a 15 year old Nikon dslr to their modern mirrorless version and lots of comments just preferred the color and rendering of the older sensor.
