Got another Top 10 list coming your way! This time, I feature my favorite episodes of the Outer Limits. (Because so many people talk about the Twilight Zone, I think it's sort of sad that everyone seems to forget this series, when it was arguably just as good.)

No fancy special effects can compete with the themes of these classic series. And the soundtrack is unbeatable.

The soundtrack, at least in the 1st Season, was composed by Dominic Frontiere - who later went on to marry the widow of Los Angeles Rams owner Caroll Rosenbloom, and was subsequently jailed for tax evasion (he had scalped 16,000 tickets to Super Bowl XIV and failed to report the income, serving 9 months in federal prison and getting handed divorce papers after his release) . He was friends with Leslie Stevens, the series creator, and the show was created, in part, to showcase his music, as he was co-exec with Joseph Stefano, the EP. In the 2nd Season Stefano was replaced by Ben Brady, and Frontiere was replaced by Harry Lubin (whose music was equally memorable, especially the two theremin theme so hauntingly used in both Cold Hands, Warm Heart and Wolf 359).

It's fun to see a fan's list of favorites. "Demon with a Glass Hand" is so good, and every time I watch it I am always punched in the heart by that ending revelation ... to think, your identity as you've known it thus far is completely wrong, and you are something altogether different from what you thought. Kills me. I love being moved by a good piece of television fantasy. One episode I enjoy has always been "The Forms of Things Unknown" (two ladies poison a blackmailing wealthy jerk and then take refuge at a creepy mansion during a storm) because it's such a fun concoction, a striking blend of gothic horror, film noir ambience, and science fiction. And I completely understand that it is a prime example of style over substance; the cinematography and lighting and sets are what make it such a treat to me. It's not one of the greatest but it's really cool. They had intended to make it the pilot for another anthology show.

When I first started my voice acting career, I was privileged to meet and work with Vic Perrin (the Control Voice on the original OL series) on several voice projects. He was a very quiet man, with a voice much larger than his physical stature. I learned much from him, and I wish he could have been upon this earth much longer.

+1000vox How fortunate you were to meet the late Vic Perrin. His inimitable style has never been duplicated to this day imho. It always griped me that he was never given credit in the series for being "The Control Voice". Without his talents the program wouldn't have had the 'awe and mystery' that it did. In my years on the air, I never came close to rivalling the Vic's cadence, tone and inflection. If I was to choose a "voice actor" of today that I admire, it would be Robert Clotworthy, check his CV on Wikipedia or hear him on Ancient Aliens or The Curse of Oak Island, among many many others. RIP Vic we still admire what you did and we miss hearing you!

To me, without Vic Perrin the Outer Limits would not be THE Outer Limits. I saw the Outer Limits in it's original run as a 10 year old. The day after an episode was aired, all us kids 4th grade would as each other "did you see the Outer Limits last night?". I still remember some of Vic's closing narrations and philosophy from the first time I heard it, they made that much of an impression on me at age 10.

In the Twilight Zone he was a treacherous Martian in People are Alike All Over, starring Roddy McDowall.

From what I understand, and I've seen it in multiple places, Specimen: Unknown was the highest Nielsen rated of all the shows. So what that means to me is the promo for that show must had really been outstanding, and it has a very good premise to where you could imagine that would capture people's attention more. I wish I could see the promo for it and see what I think. Plants from space killing people, it's just a pretty horrifying prospect. That episode was made all the more edge of the seat, as much of OL did, by the fact it largely delved into the unknown of space exploration, making people wonder if something brought back on a space mission might not result in bringing back some hostile form of life.

Out of the 48 episodes from this series, I could easily come up with a list of 25 that I liked. But there are 5 that I could rotate as my favorite depending how I felt on any particular day. 1. The Galaxy Being 2. The Borderlands 3. The Zanti Misfits 4. The Production and Decay of Strange Particles 5. Demon with a Glass Hand

I truly loved this show as a kid. I'd drop everything to get in front of the ol" DuMont on Monday nights. Some episodes I vividly remember watching as a 7 to 8 year old: The Zanti Misfits, Don't Open til Doomsday, Corpus Earthling, Fun and Games, Specimen Unknown, I Robot & Expanding Human. Anyone who enjoys tales with macabre twists might do well to check out the 1961 series "Way Out" hosted by Roald Dahl. Although the series had a kind of "Soap Opera" look (it was videotaped from NYC) It had some VERY original (and creepy) stories. Only 14 episodes were broadcast (and never syndicated). There are currently 10 of them on KZbin. One of it's more famous episodes "Side Show" (about a headless woman kept alive by an electric chair) makes a good example of just how bizarre these tales could be. I loved The Outer Limits, Way Out , The Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, Alfred Hitchcock Presents & Thriller. The mid 50's to mid 60's was truly a great time to grow up with a TV in your home!!

"The Outer Limits" was a great series. I would have chosen a different Top Ten, but won't argue with other choices! My two personal favorites: "The Sixth Finger" and "The Children of Spider County." I also would've chosen a different list. Though season 2 had some great stories it lacked the visual shock value of what the first season had. It was season one that gave this show the popularity it had and it was season two why it was cancelled after barely half the episodes Season one had. This series came off the heels of the late 50's B movies and it was the creatures from the Outer Limits that won the hearts of fans. After The Inheritors episodes they tried to bring back the excitement of season one by bringing back creatures in episodes like Keeper of The Purple Twilight and The Duplicate Man but it was too late, they lost their audience. I was barely a little kid in 1963 (5 years) but my mother would watch this show religiously with me by her side and though I don't have much memories of watching the original airing of the shows, I began collecting episodes in the 1980's once they were released on VHS and some of those "visuals" brought back very vague memories. I'll always love this series and all of the remakes can't come close to what the original series contained. It just cannot be duplicated.

I don't lose sleep over it. Sometimes ideas just arise out of the Zeitgeist--the spirit of the times. In my opinion, Ellison's claims of cribbing are thin. And besides, you can't really copyright an idea, or even a plot. I hope to release my third collection this month, BTW, and it includes a time-travel tale with a different tack, one I've not seen before. :)

I'm not seeing many mentions of Nightmare here. Even though I kind of saw the twist coming(not the full explanation they end up giving us, but the basic idea), it didn't really hurt the experience. The scenario is very well executed and the look of the episode from the aliens' design to the shadowy minimalist setting make it a real stand-out. I've only recently started marathoning the series and still have a lot more episodes to go, but Nightmare is certainly one of my favorites so far.

Finally, someone else who really likes Behold Eck. Of coarse, I was only around 10 when it came out. As an adult, I grew to see that Eck wasn't nearly as terrifying as he was when I was a kid. Eck gave me nightmares for several years. All the other aliens I could tell were just men in silly suits. The Zanti Misfits looked like the old plastic Cooties we assembled for the kids game of the same name. Eck was something different altogether and terrified me for several years, never mind the fact he wasn't really quite the bad guy.

Damn, these aren't the episodes that would have come to my mind, but, that's the trouble: 10 best episodes for a show so consistently excellent just doesn't do it justice. "The Chameleon", with Robert Duvall, was one of its very best, but so was "Zzzzzz", with its 'queen bee' girl's powerful performance. "The Architects of Fear" deserves a spot on your list, too, featuring Culp's excellent performance. I'm just noticing that he, Duvall, David McCallum, Martin Landau, and several others made more than one appearance on the show.

UK television execs were tardy on the uptake but it was broadcast long before the revival series. Granada (ITV Manchester region) showed 34 episodes in 1964, so I've read. And I can personally attest that BBC 2 transmitted all 49 episodes over 1980-81. Well, I can personally attest to some of them - the old man holding dominion over the television like an unspeakable monster - but I'm informed through the same source of reading that all were transmitted at that time, in fact the only time.

It's inevitable that one or more personal favorites will not be found on any "list" of this type. In the case of The Outer Limits, the explanation is that there are more than 10 standout episodes within the two-season run to choose from. Even a top-twenty would be difficult - for me, anyway. Great selection. Although many of these episodes can be criticized for various reasons, for me they all manage to connect at a deeper level than almost anything else I saw on TV from that time, and I can rewatch them repeatedly, and still get the same feeling, and sometimes even pick up new aspects that I missed the first time. That's very rare for me to experience even today, although I would say a show like Severance had a similar impact, but that's a serial. Thanks!

This is a top notch list. I can look past the obvious Cold War implications in some Outer Limits episodes, especially the episode where alien life transports a neighborhood to their planet, to be used as slaves. Another episode not on this list with heavy Cold War undertones is the episode where a kid is convinced to go along with his mentors experiment. He goes along, but unbeknownst to all, he's secretly planning on destroying his mentor (who has bad intentions), for the good of all. Vintage TV shows like this are like comfort food to me.
