We registered for the Eufy 11S on Amazon! It seems to have some pretty kick booty reviews and is a third of the cost of the Roomba brand. So far, it's been great! It's pretty smart, it's gotten itself unstuck plenty of times, and I didn't realize how many different features and settings it has! I will say it's not perfect, but Julep is constantly shedding and it helps with the upkeep quite a bit. I'm excited to use it on the brand new carpet in Mac's and my new apartment in a few weeks after the wedding; if we can keep up with her hair from the beginning, we'll be much better off!! -Hannah 🌻

I stopped YNAB-ing for months because of financial difficulties (there were sudden expenses that required me to cut off things, YNAB was unfortunately one of them 🥺), but as things settled down I think I am ready to restart. I'm glad I found this new video about wish farm, that makes me excited about budgeting again! I had my wish farm previously, but I didn't realize I could just delete the wish farm category once it's completed and automatically assign then to the proper category; I used to transfer the money from my wish farm category to the proper category and deleting it manually. Super excited to go back to YNAB! Thank you for this fresh explanation Hannah!

This has changed the way I budget so much! Almost always when I overspent, it was in my “🎉Treat Yo’self” category and I covered it with “😳Stuff I Forgot To Budget For”, but that didn’t encourage me to curb impulse spending. (And yeah, I know I wasn’t using the category correctly but it felt like “free” money just lying around and was too tempting.) So I got rid of Stuff I Forgot entirely and put that money into my wish farm instead. Now either way, the money is being used for a treat, so I don’t feel deprived, but I have more clarity about what my choice is when I’m considering a purchase. Do I want to dip into my money for a gaming laptop just to get a couple of coffee mugs? Usually no. And if I really did forget to budget for a necessity, I still have extra I can pull from without too much hassle.

I have an Excel with everything I want. Writing things down instead of buying right away, means I buy the things that bring me the most joy instead of just the first thing that came into my mind. However, I only allow to plant wishes that I at least wanted at three different occasions. This cut back on buyers remorse a lot.

So, about Hannah needing a "plant hobby category", I have in addition to a "wish farm" a "hobby farm" for hobbies that need supplies purchased more frequently than the one-off items in the wish farm, but still do not have to happen every month. Because when I was trying to buy all those things out of my fun money category, I was finding that I never saved up for activities outside of the house (like socializing with friends and family). My hobby farm categories get a bit of planned funding assigned to them each month and then at the end of the month I look at things like my grocery category and if I have any funds left over I can choose to send it to a hobby farm category or a wish farm category. I find that having the hobby categories in the "hobby farm" makes it even more fun and inspiring than if they were sitting elsewhere in my budget category groups. So by having an orchid plant hobby category, I have funds saved for occasional supplies like new potting medium, fertilizer, etc. to take care of the orchids I already have, but I can also save in that category to buy a new orchid plant.

Great video! Question - do you have any tips for using the Wish List and Wish Farm with a partner? Maybe his and hers wish lists and wish farms...then any extra money that comes in gets split 50/50 to each farm?
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I've never shared a wish farm with a parter! You could adjust the structure of it: he gets one small wish, you get one small wish, and you both add one large wish you both want together. As far as where the money is coming from that you contribute to the wish farm, that's up to you! If you have a joint bank account, you can split money equal ways among the wishes, or if you have separate bank accounts you can each contribute to your own wishes individually, and both pitch in equal amounts on the large wish together. Experiment with it and let me know how it goes!! I'm curious to hear! -Hannah 🌻

We have a long wish list. We have a single line in our "Life & Living" group. Since funding our infrequent expenses is still shaky - thank you debt! - we slide money into the Wish Farm category. Every quarter we will review where we are at and if we *need* or really, really *want* something and have the money to cover it. If so, we get it. If not, we wait another quarter (or so)... Once we are YNAB broke (debt free) the game will change quite a bit. All infrequent expenses will get fully funded and we can finally put a larger amount to the Wish Farm category. Then every month is Christmas!

Can you please explain why you would delete the category once you’ve funded it and spent the money? Could you make a hidden/archived “farmed” category or something too?
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
You could totally do that if you like! And many do! Deleting the category and merging it with a broader category keeps things organized but also helps with reporting. Even when you hide a category, the spending is still associated with the hidden category, so your spending report will be a little more fragmented. Merging it with a broader category can give you a better idea how much you spend in that broader category as a whole. It really just depends on what kind of insights you want to get out of your reports. ~BenB

Fun Video. Something I did recently is treat the “Wish Farm” kind of items a bit like the “Profits First” principal. By allocating 1% to wishes to initially, I can always make progress. As other priorities are addressed, I can slowly increase the percentage assigned to Wishes.

hello Hanna. Please should subscriptions I want, which are not needs, say subscriptions for sports (this world cup or the basketball app or NFL,etc) fall under my wish farm because i want them but can leave without them or should they fall under my monthly expenses because they are charged every month?
@YNABofficial Жыл бұрын
Hey there! It's all dependent on your priorities! If having a World Cup subscription is a must for you (and it's totally allowed to be a must!), then go ahead and make a category for that subscription in your "Bills" category group so that you're prepared to pay it every month. If it's something that you'd like to have one day but don't have room for it right now financially, stick it in your Wish Farm and save up for it until you're ready to afford it or are confident you could pay the bill every month. It sounds like you're planning to subscribe, in which case, definitely definitely definitely build it into your monthly finances plan and consider it a bill! 🌻 Hannah

I'm loving these videos. Just got started with YNAB a couple days ago (still on the trial) and trying to figure it out. But so far I am getting HOOKED! Loaded my entire budget, turned on auto-feeds from my cards and banks and trying to make sure i don't miss anything. The one thing that I always missed before on other budgeting apps was the TRUE EXPENSES. The ones that come up only every 6 months or 12 months. Those just slip up on you and smack you across the head! But if you plan them out in YNAB, they won't! My biggest priority now is paying off debt. I've traditionally been behind the 8 ball and ended up short every month, but after listing everything in YNAB, it looks like I actually have money left over! WHAT? How did that happen?! It's magic! I think? Thanks again for the great video and I'll definitely put this to work!
@YNABofficial2 жыл бұрын
Bob! This sounds AWESOME!! So encouraging!! YNAB kind gamifies the whole budgeting/saving experience, doesn't it? Anytime an expense catches me off guard, I immediately go and add it to my budget. The biggest one I FINALLY added this year was creating a category to save up for TurboTax. Every April I get hit with a $99 fee I wasn't expecting when filing my taxes, but NOT THIS YEAR! Do you mind if I share this as a YNAB Win in one of my future videos?! I LOVE that you have money leftover when you thought you wouldn't have any. Budgets are dope, man. -Hannah🌻

How would you run this for a shared budget? Could see it getting a bit complicated. Thanks, though, love it as always!
@brookarisa97343 жыл бұрын
You could do separate wish farms if you want to keep the S, M, L categories. But I don’t think the wish farm has to be divided into small, medium and large. You could do a yours, mine and ours breakdown. Just make sure you’re allocating each wish in a way that both partners are comfortable with.
@YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question! I've never had a partner or shared a budget, so this is uncharted territory for me! Someone else asked this too, and my thought is each of you get to pick one small goal each or one medium goal each, and then you pick one large goal together that you both want to fund. You can fund the large goal at whatever pace you want, and then make sure to always fund your smaller individual goals at equal amounts so no one is making more progress than the other. But, that's just me spitballin'! Let me know if you try it and how it goes! -Hannah 🌻
@prexzone2 жыл бұрын
why does it only have to be 3 items at a time? what if you don't have any small items left but have more medium items? do you put 2 mediums items in your wish farm or just one medium at all times?
@YNABofficial2 жыл бұрын
I think the idea behind having one of each "goal size" is that it makes it achievable and helps us still eventually acquire everything on our list. It'd be a lot easier to just knock out all the small ones and never give any money or attention to your bigger ones, OR hone in on one big one and never let ourselves have any of the smaller ones. BUT, if your list has run low on wish list items, then you could definitely do two medium-sized wishes at once or a handful of small ones! It's not a hard and fast rule, just something to keep you pursuing ALL your wish list items with equal attention. -Hannah 🌻

Do you have a video going more into depth of hiding/deleting categories? @YNABofficial3 жыл бұрын
All you have to do is set up a Savings Balance target and uncheck the "by date" box! Maybe try to stick a small wish between every medium and large wish you fund? You said you feel motivated by the small wins, so if you purposefully make a plan to pursue a small wish, then medium, then small, then large, then small... hopefully that gives you enough momentum to fund those bigger wishes but be energized by the smaller wins in between! -Hannah 🌻

The simple answer: Yes. If you have made a wish list - things waiting to be farmed/grown - you'll have a whole bunch of categories waiting to get their turn to be funded. I don't think you are meant to spend from the wish list; just fund there and move the funds to an existing, regular category. You could always rename a category but if you've also added notes, it's easier to just delete.
