I really appreciate that you're someone who is willing to do research, adjust your views instead of just ignoring stuff, and even talk about it. From what I understand, psychology tells us that that's hard for humans to do in general. I don't mean this to come off like "thank you for not being wrong anymore" or something snarky, but just that it's something I strive for personally as well and I admire intellectual curiosity and honesty. We all probably have false beliefs so the important thing is to be open enough to change our minds.

I’ve been trying to avoid dimethicones in my skincare for years, and every time I slip up and try something where it is a primary ingredient, as it often is in the top three, I end up regretting it and breaking out. As you said, it’s not clear if it’s the silicone or another ingredient. Perhaps it interacts differently depending on skin type....I have large pores, and sensitive skin. I have used Differin with success in the past though, so it’s interesting to hear it’s used in that product. Thanks for the info ! 💜

Hi, I'm really glad I came across this video plus your comment. I am currently using Differin, well having a break right now due to slight irritation from using another active to close to the Adap but I'm in the process of using it generally. Anyhow, I was using Aveeno calm and restore gel cream morning and night as it was recommended alongside the use of Differin as it's obvious gentle calming and soothing effects. However about 2 weeks ago I noticed my pores looked ALOT darker and more prominent like my tzone, forehead looked the highly congested and I thought that's really odd maybe it's a type of " purging" phase as I don't suffer from acne but rather congestion which is why I'm using Differin to try target this issue. So it made me think is it the Differin bringing the crap to the surface or could have been the La Roche Posay anthelios fluid SPF I was putting on there after routinely. I was confused at this point then I thought I wonder if it's because Dimethicone is around the 3rd ingredient on UK formulation of the Aveeno calm and restore gel cream, it may have been suffocating my skin a little or not allowing it to breath as such / too occlusive for day time wear or that it was trapping in what Differin is trying to push out ... Any thoughts or opinions on this ? TIA

dimethicone 100% breaks me out. I have done extensive spreadsheets for every single ingredient in every single product I've used. Removing silicones from my routine transformed my skin. Personally, every single occlusive I've tried gives me acne. There are other evaporative silicones that are less comedogenic for people.

I found that using silicone's on my oily skin made my pores bigger. It traps in my natural oils, the oils fight to get out from the silicone barrier so the pores get larger for the oil to come out.

Every time I use a moisturizer with dimethicone it burns and dries out my skin. Even Paula's Choice told me to stop using them and that this was an allergic reaction or sensitivity. This is real, and it happens to many people. While dimethicone doesn't clog pores, it does cause problems for many, many people.

Thank you for that. I have literally researched dimethicone so much in the past few days since it is in almost all drugstore products and have read/heard so many different views, but I feel like the way you explained it was so great. That yes on the one hand it can work well on the skin, it might potentially not be good for the environment (which is such a huge issue for me, that I can't ignore). So thanks for that - I will keep looking for products without it in it. :) all the best to you.

I‘m so glad to finally mention someone this dilemma. For me it isn‘t because I‘m allergic to any and all fragrances, perfumes and essential oils plus some of the cheaper preservatives so conventional cosmetics is not for me. Plus I try to reduce my use of plastic. I‘m all for medical uses of plastics, but I find dimethicone in so many products: mascara, eye-shadow etc.

Keep that great work! 👍😊 I am from Europe and I know that there is a difference between US and our countries in such a thing but that makes me so confused 'cause we are all humans no matter where we live on a planet and really do not understand why something is banned in US and not in Europe or vice versa. And I mean it actually in whatever.. Not just about chemicals in cosmetics. And I am kind of lazy to do my own research so I do appreciate your effort.

My skin is naturally pretty good, but no moisturizer has ever felt right on my skin until I tried a moisturizer with dimethicone. It was always too heavy and made my skin oily or too light and my skin just dried out within 20 minutes of leaving the house. Now I am amazed at how smooth and hydrated it feels after I've worn it all day. Honestly SO happy with how dimethicone works for me.

*Thank You* for this. I've always been sooo scared of Dimethicone, and yet, recently I've been wearing an amazing noncomedogenic facial moisturizer for several months and it does *not* make me break out. And now I'm doing a lot of DIY and always feel like I'm "cheating" if I even put even a drop of dimethicone into my hyaluronic acid vitamin c serum for an example. But yeah, lol, I also add other "expensive" good moisturizerising properties. Just, thank you so much! ❤

Thank you Cassandra for posting this video. Maybe it's not necessary to worry about silicone breaking me out after all.. I switched to a silicone free foundation and after that my skin seemed to break out even more. It could be a coincidence or maybe it was all the oils in the foundation? It also rubbed off my face during the day and made it way oilier and not as smooth. The environmental factors do concern me though, I wouldn't want the products I use to have a negative impact on the environment. I'm still learning on my journey to clear skin..

The ECHA will mandate reformulation of products sold for D4, D5 and D6! This was pushed out to 2026 (originally was 2025 but due to COVID its been delayed!). Really impressed with your knowledge & research on Silicones! They bring great functional & sensory properties to cosmetics. Especially creating a BREATHABLE film on the skin and bring long wear properties for foundations & concealers. Also, not all silicones are cheap and it goes beyond just dimethicones which you hit on at times :). There are also different grades of dimethicone with different costs. Additionally, Si or Silicon as you may know is on the periodic table and is created by heating Silica (also known as Quartz or Sand)! Really great video!!

Sadly for me, silicone and coconut products absolutely break me out (face). (Many, many experiments have proved this for me.) Makes it interesting to find products I can use, but it’s worth it when I do. However, I have eczema on my hands and arms, and for that I can use both silicone and coconut. It’s just my face that can’t tolerate either. Sometimes I feel like I need to be a chemist to figure all of this out. 😂

I use lotion on my arms and legs after my bath each night, right before I climb into bed. Generally it’s a store brand Nivea or Jergens knockoff. Last time I had to buy more I couldn’t remember which one I like (and my smell is gone thanks to C🙄vid) so I just grabbed one. I quickly found out that it makes me hot and sweaty, almost as if I’m wrapped in wet plastic wrap. Sure enough, it has dimethicone as one of the fist few ingredients. It’s weird but that lotion actually prevents me from sleeping well! Just bought some today without dimethicone and can’t wait to sleep good again ❤️

... silicones are actually micro-degradeble, read a study about it, a bacteria and mold break it up and then that stuff breaks apart too and you end up with sand, basically. What I'm more worried about is how you get the stuff off your face as it doesn't mix with water, it loves oils. I don't want to get rid of all the oils on my face. Some silicones do solve in water, but dimethicone isn't one of them.

From what I have read it sounds like the EU banned cyclopentasiloxane in wash off products because it accumulates in marine biomes but not for toxicity in humans, although they deemed D4 toxic. I know for a fact it's the silicone which breaks me out through trial and error of products. I have sensitive and acne prone skin and it makes me angry that none of the dermatologists I ever saw ever even mentioned it could be the silicone! ugh....now all I will put on my face is goats milk soap and goats milk lotion (just goats milk and jojoba oil) and I only use hair conditioner that are silicone free. No more big painful cysts and not even one pimple of backne since I switched to silicone free. A pimple on my face is a rarity since switching to silicone free, maybe I'll get one around that time of the month. I used to be constantly broken out and then using silicone laden products after peroxide and I now know that the "gentle" cetaphil lotion I was using was only making everything worse.

I just watched lab muffin's take on silicones and one myth she busted is how we think silicone is bad for being non-biodegradable. This is true, it is. That's because it isn't broken down by bacteria or other organisms. However, it is DEGRADABLE. Which means it degrades on its own and turn into sand, water, and carbon dioxide. I'll note that glass is also non-biodegradable. So again silicone is not BIOdegradable but is degradable. Anyways I hope this helps shed some light and please watch lab muffin's video for a deeper dive on silicone in skincare science.

I used to avoid all silicones in cosmetics like the plague but I’ve recently included them in skin and hair care and have really felt the improvement. Much more moisturized feeling even if I stopped using them for a few days my skin or hair is still in better condition it’s not just temporary for the moment it’s on your skin/hair.

Hi, I have enjoyed your videos and they offer a lot of new understanding that I otherwise would not fully comprehend on my own in relation to ingredients for skincare. I wanted to ask if you had a updated list of makeup you were that does not have dimethicone as almost all the options I clicked on for your makeup link shows that in the ingredients list and I was trying to find one without.

Awesome opinions! Will definitely look more into silicone products now! On another note, could you look into sulfates or products with sulfur?

If the main "skin" advantage of silicone is avoiding water loss, I imagine that an oil could be applied to the skin instead for those same benefits? I also imagine that it's preferred in medical settings on wounds because (if I'm not mistaken) silicone doesn't harbor bacteria? If so, could this offer some benefits for acne sufferers? I started avoiding them for my curly hair and then tried avoiding them in skincare. My acne improved and I haven't gone back because I'm afraid of triggering acne again. However, they can be hard to avoid. It took me a while to find a silicone-free sunscreen!

I'm currently looking for a good sunscreen without silicones. Which one works for you? I used to use Pratima spf, but it is currently sold out, and the last time that happened, it wasn't in stock for six months :(

"tested on animals is horrible,.. but we should listen to the research". I do love your advice it's just things like this are a bit hypocritical. If you would like to do a video on alternative ways to test if an ingredients harms fetuses or has an increased risk of liver cancer please do so.

I just don’t get how it can prevent transdermal water loss while at the same time be semipermeable. Wouldn’t the moisture be able to escape? And if not then isn’t it sealed?? I’m confused.

Hello Cassandra! Thank you so much for all the effort you put into your videos! They are so informative! I am learning so much! I've been looking into getting sunscreen lately and I noticed that even in some reef safe sunscreens they have dimethicone (Cetyl Dimethicone (Mineral Derived)), so I am really confused! Could you please elaborate on this? Thank you!!

I have the ordinary azelaic acid paste which is suspended in dimethicone and I've felt so weird using it because I know it's helping my acne but my whole life I've been so scared of it. Like I didn't mind it in makeup because I wash my face but in skincare I always made sure it wasn't in stuff that doesn't get washed off (think moisturizer). I've been so confused and even though my skin is clearer I was STILL thinking of stopping my use. Just shows how brainwashed I was, thanks for this video it came at the right time.

Tons of great info & you debunked a lot of myths about silicone. But, you added fuel to the fire on one of them & felt I just had to point it out. I am in no way going to be technically accurate here but the message is accurate & the truth. Silicone starts from sand. It is also a non-toxic product. You're correct, it isn't biodegradable BUT it is microdegradable. It takes about two yrs for it to break down. it doesn't break down completely but what's left, is sand. Right back to where it started from. Also, during those two yrs, it's still non-toxic & not harming marine life (or any other life.) While It is a very abundant resource we'll never run out of (I mean, heck...it's sand lol!). But, we're not contributing to it's supply & it's not harming anyone or anything. I got this info from another YT'er that talks to a chemist & she asked him a lot of good questions about silicones. If interested, I'm sure I can find it again, just might take me a lil bit so I'll wait & see on that lol. Again, I learned a lot from your video & appreciate you sharing all your knowledge, time & valuable research with all of us! I subscribed about 30 secs in!👊😊✌

Silicone is an occlusive! Of course it has to be in the top 5 list of ingredients in a moisturizer. The whole point of a moisturizer is to stop or limit trans epidermal water loss, and not to "infuse" hydration into the skin. Silicone is not a "cheap" copout lol do better research...

Laureana Villalta I have heard that if you leave a box of opened baking soda in it, it is supposed to take out some of the smell! My mom will do this in our fridge sometimes and it works! I haven’t tried it for a dresser drawer but it would be worth a try!
