My Type 1 Diabetes Diagnosis Story

Hi, it's Alicia! I'm a type 1 diabetic who was diagnosed in January 2021 at age 14. Today I wanted to tell my type 1 diabetes diagnosis story. This video wasn't easy to film and I wasn't even sure if I was going to upload it. As you will see I do get emotional (and I'm sorry I am such an ugly crier lol) I didn't expect this video to be as morbid or raw as it turned out to be but I think it's important for me to not hide how scary and emotional being diagnosed with T1D can be. If you've been diagnosed recently and happen to come across this video I hope this can bring you some sort of comfort, because I know when I was diagnosed I spent hours trying to find people I could relate to just to not feel so alone. You were crying because it IS a big deal. You were traumatized firstly. Being ill and not knowing you're really ill and not knowing what's wrong yet getting worse and worse with no answers IS traumatic. It's confusing and scary and isolating when nobody around you fully understands how much you're suffering. So give yourself credit for handling a potentially deadly illness as well as you did, and let yourself feel how you feel. Never apologize for your feelings. And even having a dx is a big deal, it can be a relief to know, and yet it changes your life forever in how you handle your health and need to attend to it more than before in ways that you haven't had to before.

This is si true!! I totally understand what you talking about. I just got epilepsy diagnosis and I swear that time before diagnosis and after first seizure, That time was so traumatizing. And especially when the doctor told me long seizure could be life-threatening. So I totally get it.

Wow this made me very emotional. I cried everyday for 15 months after my son's diagnosis. I still get really emotional thinking about that day and that he has to live with this. You are very strong and mature to be able to talk about your journey and help others.

i had a dka diagnosis and it was so traumatic, honestly it was so scary, i had lost so much weight, couldnt eat or sleep, drinking a lot of water and peeing every 2 minutes, this sounds weird but its so nice to see other people with a similar diagnosis to you because thinking about the fact that i almost died is so scary, especially as a 9 year old, thinking back on it as a nearly 15 year old is sooo crazy😭😭

I fell upon this video, and I was crying right along with you, Alicia because that was my exact life 51 years ago at age 12. From going out with friends, drinking large frappes (they weren't called smoothies back then in 1972), to be given "coke syrup"(sugar in liquid form) to settle my stomach from continuous vomiting, the urgency and chatter in the hospital after the DKA diagnosis, and being so alone, we share the same story. I live in Boston MA and was admitted to the Joslin Diabetes Clinic for a week to learn about T1D and was pretty much on my own. My mom had 3 other children to take care of, and my dad had to work or lose his job. The tools we use today, CGM, pumps etc are far from what I used in 1972 (only urine tests and syringes), and I am so grateful for the medical advances. I am sorry you were diagnosed with this horrible disease and I want you to know, I know what a day in YOUR life is, the ups and downs, the continuous monitoring, multi injections, carb counting, the preparing and being ready for anything at all times. I got diagnosed on July 7th of this year and I must say our stories are quite similar. It’s normal to cry and feel upset about the disease since it can be really frustrating. I’m so happy I found this channel so we can see the point of view of others living with the disease.

I wish I saw videos like this before my diagnosis i remember like literally fighting my parents when they tried bringing me into hospital because I didn't think I was sick enough even though I was throwing up everything I ate, drinking like 20 bottles of water a day, sleeping in all my classes and then sleeping more when I got home and had lost a ton of weight in the course of like a week when I got to the hospital I couldn't walk up the hill to the er without stopping to rest every five seconds and as soon as the doctor saw my blood sugars I was rushed onto a drip and had to stay in the hospital for over a week diabetes needs so much more awareness before I went in the hospital that day I honestly couldn't name you a single diabetes symptom and thank you so much for making this seeing a story so similar to what I experienced is so reasuring and thank you for sharing this

I was diagnosed at 23 and I can relate to the despair, dear, and denial that can hit very hard and it varies from one another it might hit very severely and could be mild too. At diagnosis I felt like I lost my independence I went in depression for 7 months I wished death took me. Your crying was not a sense of exaggerating but it actually was understandable due to the severity of the shock of a new chronic illness that probably is gonna last forever unless cure is found. Hey! You're not an ugly crier!!!!!! You're just a normal teenager who makes sure that other people know what goes around the world. When you were saying what your simptoms were, i was shaking. I recently had the same simptomps you had, so i am really worried, because im a people pleaser like you, so i feel bad if i take time from other people because of my problems. I just fell bad! Now, I just wanted to tell you that it's ok to open yourself , because holding everything inside it's not a good thing. I can tell. I usually get bullied bc im the one that has straight A's, and here in Italy, if you're smart you're dumb. And i never told anything to anyone. One day, my teacher found out, and told my parents everything. Then, from that day everything was better! Anyway, sry if my english it's not correct, im Italian! Similar to everyone else is that lethargy. Wanting to sleep. Couldn’t get enough. I was so anxious and my body was so jumpy and I couldn’t catch my breath after walking 12 feet. I finally agreed to go to the ER but I wanted a nap first. Luckily I was denied that nap because who know if I would’ve slipped into a coma or not. It so crazy what we tell ourselves to explain waking up in the night and being to torn between going to the bathroom or getting something to drink. Crazy but I’m glad all of us have come thru it with a diagnosis and better understanding of our bodies. Good luck to everyone. Stay strong and informed. ☮️

I got my epilepsy diagnosis 2 monts ago, and I clearly remember how it feels when ambulance rushed me to the hospital and i remember that I was crying and praying that I’m not going to die, please not yet I said inside of my head And I understand that feeling when you feel completely alone and no one, even your own parents doesn’t understand. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes Last week and currently in the hospital, I'm 47 which is a wonder for the doctors, they said I am too old to get sick (with diabetes of course) which sounded like dark comedy to me. Have to admit I'm worried about the diet management part and the hypoglycemia risk but as you said eventually you get used to it. I'm sorry you had to go through all this being a youngster but I'm sure you managed. So how are you managing now, I hope you got the hook of it and became a healthy young lady. My story: I had a broken leg at the time when I was drinking lots and water and the school nurse would help me get into the school with a broken leg so we were really close, so my mom asks her why I’m drinking so much water and she said because I’m dehydrated and I need an air filter in my room. My parents had one so they did that but it didn’t help at all, I would get up in the middle of the night just to go to the bathroom several times. At an in school concert no one was helping me with my crutches when they were across the room, I got really overwhelmed and almost passed out. I got to the nurse and she sent me home and turns out I had covid-19 and I had to stay home, it was almost Christmas time and everything that I had except for water and milk for really spicy but they weren’t spicy foods. My mom came home of New Years Eve from work and could tell I wasn’t looking good, I lost a lot of weight and wasn’t eating, she gave me medicine but I threw it up, that’s when she knew there was something wrong. My parents rushed me to the ER and they ran some tests and said to go to a different hospital so they transported me. My blood sugar was 786, which if anyone doesn’t know that’s dangerously high, you could die from that. They treated me well and I got to go home from the hospital 3 days later. I guess the new year for me wasn’t that great.. 😂

My story is similar to yours, for me it was not a smoothie but a large 1L Pepsi that sent me over the edge. I got so sick after that soda. I was so tired like a zombie just sleeping all the time. Deathly thirsty, for the last 3 hours before going to the hospital I started throwing up, the last hour even water. I was getting delirious as well. We went to the hospital and the ER doctor said is he diabetic? My mom was like no, I had a strong ketone breath and the rapid shallow respiration. I remember the doctor saying something about sugar, I thought that’s dumb! I ate chicken and it’s probably indigestion. Nope BG sugar was super high and well that was it!

The burning in your chest was a sign of your blood becoming acidic. Your body was try to cope by breathing it off. Eventually you would have had acid reflux or coffee ground emesis/ throw up and possibly kussmaul breathing.

I was diagnosed when I was 3. I am 17 now btw. Don’t remember much, other than I know I was in the hospital for a few days and someone asked me if I wanted Goldfish (which was NOT a good idea) My younger sister was diagnosed 2 years later when she was 3 as well. But it didn’t end there…… My older sister was just diagnosed with diabetes back in October 2022. IT SUCKS! Diabetes SUCKS. I can’t put it any other way. I have been made fun of for it, I have gotten asked the DUMBEST questions about it, people have SAID dumb things like “oh just do so and so and it’ll get rid of” Some people will never know what it’s like….. He is now in the hospital and he may stay overnight I’m not sure. I have been researching what type one is and how people who have it live with it. definitely look for a second opinion from another doctor! but there are many other illnesses/conditions that present some of the same symptoms as early diabetes symptoms. you know your body best and if something feels wrong definitely speak up and push to get the care you need. i hope everything works out okay 🤍

when i was diagnosed i was 4 i remember i was with my grandma i would BEG for apple juice glass after glass and i remember my mom and dad saying they were taking me to my doctor and i remember peeing the bed all the time so that was a frequent symptom so i remember the drive to CHOP (children’s hospital of Philadelphia) was just my mother crying. i just sat in the back of the car bc i loved car rides. we got there and i was in a fun waiting room i was my normal 4 year old self. i was clueless and happy. i was but in the ER and my blood sugar levels were 474 i believe. i was scared. they gave me a stuffed elephant i named hero bc i loves big hero 6 and i remember laying there. i was placed in a room and they put ivs in me i was screaming. i remember my mom sining to me trying to make me stio crying i remember i was allowed to drinn water and my mom would name my cousins and then i would drink when she stopped at frankie (the oldest cousin) when my parents were at training the doctors had to give me shots and just like you i was petrified. i hid under a sink and i was with me grandpa so he had no clue what he was doing. im 12 now iv had it for 8 years and i remember covid started on the 5th year of it. Here's how you can cure your T1....kidding. I was diagnosed 1/18/1985, just after my 17th birthday half-way through my junior year in high school. I was the son of a 22-yr career US Air Force father. I had planned my whole life to study hard in all the math and science classes, take extracurricular activities and sports, to get an appointment to the US Air Force Academy. My family even lived in Colorado Springs at the time, the town right next to that Academy. I was treated for my diagnosis and went through diabetes education and training at the Air Force Academy Hospital. There I learned that my life-long dream of being a cadet, flying jets, serving a career in the Air Force was never going to happen. So not every case do you really "get to do what you want to do". I had very similar experiences as you did, except my first symptom was frequent urination. For people who don't understand what that means: literally every 15 minutes around the clock you are running, full speed, to the bathroom with a ready-to-burst bladder. You get to the point that you don't even flush each time because you are going so much. Like you finish going, and have to go again immediately. Then the unquenchable thirst is a very real thing. You wake up with an absolutely parched dry mouth - not even a hint of moisture in it. You cannot drink enough to not be thirsty. Extreme weight loss because you are pee-ing away every drop of moisture from every cell in your body to create that urine. What happens is your immune system kills off the insulin producing cells in your pancreas (this is how T1 starts). No insulin means you cannot get rid of glucose from every drop of food you eat or any non-diet drink you have, that eventually ends up in your blood stream. As glucose level rises, your kidneys try to filter out that excess glucose in your blood by passing it off to urine. In order to do that, they need fluids, which they extract from every cell in your body. You are actually dehydrating every cell in your body. Your body falls apart fast.

I have learned alot of diabetics who have had kidney stones and that diabetes can cause them. Have you ever had kidney stones?
