The white album is amazing in mono my mouth dropped when I first heard it. That’s my go to white album now

I only own the original released versions and remember impatiently waiting for the day they were released each time. All of them came In a long box and the thought was they’d sit side by side in the same space as an LP record and use those same bins. They sound good enough for the car or iPod. I recall seeing that Japanese version when it was new in a store on a trip to Boston for $100. Only one I ever saw. Almost jumped on it but was too much for a young man on a budget. Great content and glad to see you back.

I think the 09 CDs take too much criticism for being heavy-handed on the bass. From everything I've ever heard about Beatles master tapes, they're apparently loaded with bass. There's a lot of stories from the old days of Beatles records skipping on low-budget equipment, usually because the bass was too boomy. I've always thought the 09 remasters are restoring what's actually on the master tape, for better or worse. Very well-reasoned picks, everyone keeps recommending Beatles For Sale in stereo so I may have to give that a go. I think Help in mono gets a bad reputation because we're so used to the stereo version of Help that the mono sounds jarring to us, but I've come to much prefer the mono version of that album. I like that it's kind of swampy, a rare quality for a Beatles album, and I think the drum sound on the mono version is what blows the stereo mix away. Ringo kicks ass on that album, particularly Ticket to Ride. For me the best version of the White Album might be split in two, I prefer the mono mixes of the first disc and I like some of the stereo mixes on the second disc better.

The initial 1987 CD releases of Help! And Rubber Soul in Canada contained the original 1965 stereo mixes by mistake. Besides just listening there is a way you can tell which version you have by the code near the spindle hole on the discs. What that code is exactly escapes me now because it was so long ago when I was collecting these CDs but I'm sure that information is available on line somewhere. The problem with those 1965 mixes is they are so hard-panned to the left and right that if you listened to the music on headphones it would seem like the vocals would be right against one ear and the instruments right against the other. By remixing the two channels ever so slightly towards the center the stereo image now sounds like it is in front of you while listening on headphones instead of the musical elements being right against each ear.

Great choices, Brian, hard to argue with any of them. Not a big fan of the recent "remasters "; maybe I've been listening to the originals for so long. Like you, cds are essential for car listening. Thanks for another wonderful, interesting video.

Pretty much the same for me. I think at least Pepper and the White Album should come in mono and stereo. In that sense, I would include Pepper from 1987 (sounds excellent!) and the mono White Album from the deluxe box set from 2018 (also a flat transfer if I remember correctly).

Great List! Personally as of now, all I have is the 87 88 CD's and I love them

Good picks all around. I would include the remix of Let it Be because I think Giles did a good job of it! Abbey Road is difficult. Short of a Black Triangle CD, the 87 is a good choice. But I think its the album that is least affected by the bass boost in the 09 reissue. The Giles remaster also sounds good.

Fun video Brian, I agree with all of your selections, I do like Hard Days Night in stereo but there is only one CD version in stereo (2009), the 80's one was mono only (same with PPM, WTB and BFS)

Check out the 1998 anniversary CD of The White Album, it uses the 80's transfer but fixes some track indexing issues as well as having excellent packaging.

You're missing the mono CD of MEET THE BEATLES which includes I Want To Hold Your Hand. This is the album and single that launched the group in the U.S. Before this single and album no one in the U.S. had heard of the Beatles.

With a hard days night it's difficult for me to choose between the mono 2009 and stereo 2009, the songs from side 1 (the movie ) sounds better in mono, but side 2, specially songs like things we said today, You can't do that and i'll be back sounds more Open and powerfull in stereo for me. As far as revolver concern, i feel 2009 stereo is more enjoyable for me, clearer and less muddy, the separation in stereo improve the enjoyment of the álbum for me. Agree on Beatles for sale, when i listened it for the first time on stereo, it was a different álbum for me. And agree Also on magical mystery tour, always prefered on 2009 mono. Sounds more powerful

I would go mostly with your choices but i would change yellow sub for the song track version and abby road for the 2019 mix. I cant decide weather i would use the 1987 let it be or the 2021 remix. Let it be is my favorite beatles album and i like both mixes very well

Thank you! 👍👍 You're convincing me to buy the mono box set. Gotta say though, I agree with your take on that particular mono CD version (Super Deluxe 🌶 ), it's something special. Surprised you passed on 2009 stereo Magical Mystery Tour (to be fair though, I have not yet heard the mono)! Surprisingly, I've actually developed a particular fondness of the 2009 stereo Rubber Soul album, after never liking the 1987 version. It kind of slaps! 😮 🤯 ...but I'm itching to hear the 2009 mono, and that 1965 stereo mix 😉 ✌️ ❤️🎶❤️

Love and own all of these on your list. I thought about including some of these vinyl rips, but then decided to just keep it official CD releases only.

@@BrianBringelson yeah understood, by the way I was so impressed by the '17 mono Sgt pepper cd I gave away 2 copies of the '09 mono pepper. The '09 is thinner in comparison I agree. And controversial but I like the u.s. mono '14 rubber soul only because it includes the false start I'm looking through you on the stereo songs.

Wow, Brian ! You have good taste !! Almost exactly the same as mine !! Of course, I still listen to a lot of the others when I feel like it. That's the endless fun of collecting Beatles ! And I noticed on my phone that Bobby was trying to borrow your Let It Be box set ! He's got good taste too.

What is 'digital reverb'? You mentioned it in this video and I've heard others mention it too.

Reverb added digitally as supposed to an echo chamber
@BrianBringelson2 жыл бұрын
Great question. The best way I can describe it is that in the 1960's EMI Studios (Abbey Road) used a real echo chamber (located at Abbey Road, still there by the way) for any reverb/echo they wanted. In the 1980's when George Martin remixed Help and Rubber Soul, he used digital reverb. Not exactly sure what type he used, could have been from a rack mounted effects unit. Either way, it's very different and when you compare the 1965 mixes with the 1987 mixes, you can clearly hear the difference. Most think the 1965 mixes are much better. I'm in that camp.

Great video as always Brian. Mostly agree with you. Though, as someone with an aversion to hard panning, Rubber Soul has to be mono for me. I love the Pepper 2009 mono, but hadn't known about the super deluxe mono version. So will definitely give that a listen on Amazon music.
